Getting rid of Vista!

lolSuperFetch?

Why have the graph if its gonna lie T.T

Vista's graph doesn't lie, however most of the Ram taken up by vista is on a "using this since nothing else is" but the moment anything else needs it, it gives it away. Decent example: On a single core machine, ffxi probably keeps your cpu usage at 100%, so how can you still open up programs and do anything at all if ffxi is eating up everything? Although ffxi tends to be greedy on how much cpu it reserves for itself, it gives it away freely when other programs need it.

So lets say vista is using 2 GB of ram in a 3GB system, and you open a program that -needs- 2GB for itself, vista will automatically free up 1GB of what it's using (in much less than a second), and now vista will likely being using around 800MB-1GB while the program has it's 2GB usage. As you open more and more programs vista's share shrinks and shrinks.

Yes Linux is something Windows is not. It contains simplicity which allows less things to go wrong. Which is why Lix requirements are so low. You can take the latest version of lix and run it on a pre XP built machine and still maintain performance. Comparing an OS that's built on simple and efficient processing goals to an OS that's built with end user usability and interactivity in mind is frivolous.
Uh, if anything Tymon wouldn't be comparing Linux to Windows, simply by virtue that he knows that Windows isn't Linux, and vice versa.

Anyone who says vista eats up too many resources doesn't understand vista. Superfetch is doing you a *favor* by using memory. Sure the base reqs for vista are far higher (read triple) than that of xp, but after that how much ram do you typically use for your programs? 256 megs to 1 gig. That makes the recommended for a vista pc, a whopping 2 gigs. The average *basic* desktop computer no more than 500 dollars has a fluffy 3 or 4 gigs on it and usually on the 64 bit operating system. What does vista "hog" those other resources for you ask? Precaching. Vista takes your habits and expectations for opening other programs and gets them cached up in the *unused* memory. Stuff that would sit dormant that you're wasting performance. I don't see how shaving sometimes seconds off your program startup times for commonly used tasks can be a bad thing.

I'm not a vista pusher, but it's in my job description to sell computers with vista on it. I wasn't a true believer of it till I started using it, and I wouldn't go back. I would never say it's the most *stable* operating system but I like the fact that when vista crashes a program, it doesn't bsod and reboot but rather just closes the program and in many cases saves the state it was in. At this point anyone who has issues with vista, it's not vista causing them, it's the problem of developers who won't upgrade with the times and release proper patches instead of half assed fixes.

If I had my way though, we'd have the instant on PCs that have been in the works. The concept is that there's a solid state drive with a linux os on it powerful enough to do things like instant messaging, web browsing, and possibly word processing. If you want to do more advanced applications, you have windows boot in the background and you pop over into the other environment ready to run any programs you need. The linux os will cause far less power and system strain, using less energy and extending the life of the computer. This also makes it swift and simple to use for the things most people use the computer for in the first place while reserving the power for when it's really needed.

Former Best Buy employee 450266. Went from Media Spec to Administrative Senior in 2 years. Resigned after finding a better job. But that's enough on flexing the BBY muscles.

oh don't get me started on GreenScreen......bane of my BBY existence when people would not approve orders or not keep reboot slips.....

You think my employee number is high? People that have come after me are in the 8xxxxx's and 9xxxxx's

Yup, Vista's a lot more intelligent and powerful than most people realize.

But then again most people don't even try to optimize or even work with it at all, they just go WAAAH VISTA SUX Obv. and bitch and moan...
