Getting Started.

Uhh that won't do.. rdm won't have anything useful for a blu other than cure spells. And if you're gonna do that then you might as well just sub whm..

My two cents: start out as a warrior to 18 when you get subjobs available, then make up your mind what you wanna do. Reason being warrior is hands down the most widely used sub in the game, especially for advanced jobs. Ninja/war, Samurai/war, dragoon/war, Paladin/war, Ranger/war (until dual wield anyway).

Unless you're really gonna stick to your guns with red mage.. it's really a useless job to lvl > .>
I got mine to lvl 50 before realizing I hate being a rdm haha

Alright then, what if I made Blue Mage my main when it became available. What would be a good sub-job for it? I really want a Blue Mage and am willing to try almost anything to make it work.

I don't know a hell of a lot about blu but I do know war is a good sub to have until dual wield becomes available *edit* for ninja. Then you'd wanna go blu/nin according to everyone and their mother. And guess what sub you're gonna need for nin? ^^

*However* as a rule of thumb I level all of my low lvl jobs w/ whm sub until the main is at 10 and I can party in the dunes, then I switch to what's more useful for the party, which in your case would be warrior solely because at low lvls your only job is to do as much dmg as possible... from what I've read /war is good sub for physical spells as well as a bit more str and attack.

The generally accepted sub for blu after level 30 is Thf. Blu spells can be inaccurate and subbing thf lets you combine them with Sneak Attack to make them 100% accurate and allow you to equip more str ect instead of accuracy gear to pray it hits.
This combined with the ability of a blu to skillchain at will using the chain affinity ability means you wont "miss" your skillchain caus the spell you used with chain afinity missed. Ninja sub on a BLu is only for lv 74+ generally and unless the mob has a move that is particularly frustrating to those without shadows you are weakening yourself. (blu also have zephyr mantle which gives shadows makes the need for shadows from ninja redundant)

another thing about ninja as a subjob in a party. It SUCKS as a SJ until lv 24 for thf or that have stat boosting daggers(debateable as to whether it's better than war or even a smart choice), 2 war/nin dual tanking which will be stupid to do until you're past mandy levels aka 30+. Rangers sub ninja but only for survival purposes.
Until level 50 there is no tangible benefit from dual weild from subbing ninja. People going for a ninja sub before then outside of rare exceptions are generally idiots trying to act like what works at lv 75 will work at lv 20.
If you go a DD route get meat jerky or riceballs. They are cheap foods that are very good at low levels. riceballs last until lv 40. do not get sushi. sushi users before level 40 are people trying to act like theyre high level but sushi does not actually help them yet.

Ninja is the subjob that almost everyone uses for soloing so it may be a good idea to get that for when you have to learn spells for blu via soloing.
Be sure to research where spells come from. If it is expensive chance are you could just do the quest yourself for the spell instead of wasting time/gil.

Always try to give yourself the best gear you can get. as a newbie you can get away with silly gear chioces cause everyone remembers being a newbie however you generally wont get off the hook for that if the selection is atrocious beyond belief or you are lv 30+. Learn to never sit still in a zone doing nothing waiting for your parties if you arent watching a movie or something. try to finish quests that give gil or farm for cash to use later while looking for a party. Actually doing something instead of standing around doing nothing is the best way to make gil and alleviate boredom.

Gilgamesh :( This is QCDN, I can't help you! :D

If you need any help getting started around Sandy then just let me know. I'm usually around there lately starting up my pld. Ari should be in front of the AH in Southern Sandy at the moment. Unless I've lost my connection since I got to work.

He's on Gilgamesh Server.

Ohhhhhh. Reading comprehension for the loss. :banghead3:

The hell did you end up here then?

Gilgamesh = boring. I was there when I very first started the game. Quetzy is such a tighter community, it's kinda nice. I mean, mainly due to this forum, it's great to be able to talk to people here and then in game. It makes it seem like it's more a community of friends then a group of people playing a game. That's my opinion; it's the only thing keeping me paying $15/month. If you're interested, switch to Quetzy. The game is a lot easier to get through the tough area's with a community supporting you.

I don't know anything about what Gilgamesh is like, but I have to agree that Quetz does have a pretty tight community in general. A lot of people know one another here. If you're just starting into the game, as hard as it may seem to throw out the progress you've made so far, you might want to go to the world-pass thread and get a world pass to start a character here on Quetzalcoatl. When if comes down to it, you'll probably glad you made the decision to do so.

Getting started can be pretty rough, and its a bit repetitive. When you get up close to level 10 or so and you're in a position to begin partying, you often find that Easy Prey and maybe the odd Decent Challenge become the most efficient mobs to take on for good exp. You'll have to fight a lot of them, but the tedium starts to break when you begin getting parties. Then a whole new brand of fun begins when the monsters you fight are within the Very Tough to Incredibly Tough range, so party combat is often much different than soloing ever is.

The claims some have made here about monster ratings becoming somewhat skewed as you level are true, so take that into account... By the time you are level 20, easy prey monsters will start becoming difficult if not impossible to solo, and for some jobs that remains the case almost right up until endgame. This isn't true for all jobs, but there are many that do not have the capacity to solo monsters well. Since you're interested in blue mage, I suspect you won't have a problem with this. They hold their own in solo fights pretty well from what I understand, but it's been 7 months since I've played, so I hope my advice isn't too dated.

I agree with Devi on this. Quetz is a awesome place. There are alot of people who will lend a hand

- Did anyone else have a rough start to this game?
We all did. Level 7-10 can be a pain sometimes for some jobs.
- What tips could you offer that would help me out?
Just keep going at it dude and have fun. Enjoy the low prices for the most part.
- Where would be the best place to buy low-level spells? (Dia, Stone, etc.)
Magic shop in Port San'Doria

As for going BLU main you might want to wait until you have a higher level job thats atleast 35ish because getting the items to get over to Aht Urghan can be a pain.

Just keep going at it and have fun. There will be times where it will be frustraiting to be playing FFXI because people will be morons and things will go wrong. Just remember though quests here dont merit experience.

The thing is, a good portion of my friends play on Gilgamesh. So I can't just leave. Trust me, if it was just me, I'd switch over in a heartbeat.

On a side note, I don't think BLU is gonna work for me. I thought it'd be cool, but I've been reading about it and it doesn't seem like the job for me. Low accuracy, hard to get spells, yea, not my forte. I'll have to look into other jobs for the time being.

Blu is pretty awesome. I thought I'd like it as a time-filler, but this is definitely my next main. I dunno who said it has low accuracy but that's a bit of a lie, it has access to much of the same acc+ equipment as other jobs do.

Some spells do take some time to get, some take no effort at all. If you're a patient person then you will be very impressed with blu - it has a lot of capability to shine.

If your gonna roll BLU the amount of ACC needed all depends on the sub.

BLU takes alot of subs. WHM THF NIN WAR(in come cases)

- But thx to a lvl 71 Knight in Shining Armor who soloed those skelletons for my drop because he felt sorry for me, I got it (he ran by me everyday for 3 weeks untill he decided to help me out)! I hope he achieves the best this game has to offer and everything goes his way. Because he showed me help is everything, at a critical point in my days in this game. His name was Rooi btw.

If you want to see how well Rooi has done in this game look for the guy in full if not near full kaiser with a aegis and a excaliber tanking the hell outta mobs in besieged, lol

It is full Kaiser. Rooi also has Justice Sword for off hand when he does pld/nin.

Low lvl advice - Get all your spells, they are very useful. Check out http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/and http://ffxi.somepage.com for spell lists and where you can get them.
Also use the auction house to sell things. I started just selling stuff to npc, and was amazed when someone showed me the auction house one my second day(i assumed it was for higher lvl players).
http://wiki.fficlopedia.org is also a great resource

Server stuff - I started on Ifrit, and moved to Quetz, and was very happy with the switch. The people are a lot nicer, and RMT is less of a problem. There are quite a few people in my linkshell that have switched servers(prob 10-12) and everyone likes Quetz a lot better.
