I was just in an IM with a person (not sure if i want to call him a friend) that told that he bought gil, he was an okay friend we were never really best friends like tarn and kipa, but i felt that somehow that i didn't like him. Yes he is a natural noob even into his 50's he came to our pt with no food or ranged weapon for pulling, he was a drk.

I am not sure how to be okay with it since he is part of the force that kept me from buying valuable equips such as promise badge, monster signa, etc. for my rdm and other jobs.

His account was deleted so he is starting over, i not sure if i should respect him, dislike him, or just ignore him all together(which i have been every since, he told me). He imed me and we talked a bit, he seems a bit oblivious.

How do you deal with people like this? He even asked me for a pearl back into my ls!

A friend is a friend, a game is just a game. Which do you place higher priorities on?

Sorry bud, I cant be your friend anymore because you bought gil. Seems a bit childish to me. There is so much huffing and puffing over what people forget, is a game, dont take it so seriously. Enjoy your time playing with your friends, thats the whole point of it all.

I would talk to him about it. and show to him where gillbuying isn't really helping him out at all. show him how to make gil in the game so he won't be spending all his money on buying gil.

Instead of trying to ditch him and avoid him, teach him how to farm or craft or generally any way of making money, than flashing some plastic at a website and earning millions of gil.

Show him the error of his ways (I'm sure this is obvious to both you and him) and help him learn from his mistakes, so his second character doesn't get deleted on him.

I think that buying gil is wrong, but I'm sure it must have flashed through everyone's mind that you could beat the grind and flash abit of cash to get furthur into this game and avoid the grind... But that's what makes the game that much more rewarding is knowing you've done the grind and got what you wanted. It is appealing to some, and it'll always be like that, but sooner or later it'll catch up to them and they'll either quit or try and go legit..

Ok i get what you guys are saying thx.

He knows how to craft and stuff, he is just naturally impatient. I doubt that he will give it up. I will let him know that it bothers me, but ditch him for it thx ppl

oops sorry forgot to put that before ditch "not"

If I were you, and assuming that you strongly dislike gil buyers, I would talk to him about it. Tell him your reasons on why you think it's wrong to buy gil, make a good argument, tell him how you think that gil buyers (and thus gil sellers) affect your game play.

Maybe he will side with your opinion after all, maybe he won't. I think the most important thing you can do is to be honest with him on how you view the issue. It doesn't matter whether he agrees with your point of view or not, but at least you put it out in the open and there won't be any hidden resentment of sorts hovering between the two of you.

Friendship doesn't mean that people see eye to eye on everything they do, friendship to me means that no matter what, you can be honest with your friend.

This may just be a coincidence, but you aren't talking about a particular Galka who deleted his character at DRK 74 about 3 months ago, are you?

Encourage them?

We need someone to jump start this (blank) economy.

An old acquaintance of mine in-game admitted that he had bought a piddly million gil a few months back. It wasn't even something I had to draw out of him, he just out and said it, right in the open. I kind of felt like I was with someone who was talking very loudly about the 7-11 they had knocked off in the middle of a bank; I literally shushed him to tells and pulled him aside.

As you can tell, he's not exactly the most "street smart" person in the world; naivete is a bit of an understatement. He's not really a good friend of mine ... he initiates all our conversations, and to be perfectly honest, he gets on my nerves a little.

Still, I knew him well enough to realize that he's a completely benevolent, well-intended entity within the game, and the only reason he keeps talking to me is an attempt to maintain (what he views as) a friendship.

I simply told him not to talk about it so freely, if he must do it, and also explained to him that I strongly encouraged "earning" his own gil. He was frustrated because he felt like he couldn't party without being able to afford upgraded equipment, and I can certainly understand that.

The point he wasn't grasping was that he needed to consider making money to be part of the game. He should find a way to have as much fun as possible doing it ... and if that wasn't possible, to at least minimize his boredom with it. When I told him to try to look at it as if his rising gil numbers were just another form of experience levels, going up and up, I think I turned him around a bit.

I haven't heard much from him since, but he eternally complains about his in-game poverty, so I can only assume I got through to him.

In the end, I think, we can all understand temptation. I know that around here, a "burn 'em at the stake" mentality can develop very rapidly, but I won't be a part of it. I don't like it when people fuel the virtual money industry on either side of the transaction, but I refuse to literally hate the people doing it. That's a prime example of something a few people call "geek rage."

If I've got to hate anyone or anything, there are far better candidates.

Winkle will that is exactly how i feel twoards him and how you described him is 90% compatible to who i know. Only his armor wasn't top quality he used mythril sallet gear at 55 when i pted with him, not sure if that is top quality he looks like a black burnt mummy with it on.

I will be friends with him, he really gave the gil he spent to his friends he said. Which i found awkward, but hey he is not a bad guy.

His account was deleted so he is starting over,

So, assuming he had things on his account before than really he's just replacing what he lost in a sense. IE: he had 5 million gil before. Players economy -5. He buys 5 million gil. Gil Seller Economy -5, player economy Even.

So really, he spent his personal money for it. The player economy, if he bought the same as he had in a fair sense, is the same as if he had never deleted. I have a problem with new players buying accounts and gil because they need to learn the game and persevere to arise and achieve. I don't give a damn about any player below 40's equipment because I know that they may just not have the money. So long as they can do their job: Ranger with ranged equip, Ninja with Shihei, etc. At the same time, he's your friend. If he gave some gil out to his friends, fine. At least he's a kind hearted person. In the end, he's your friend. He's your friend outside the game, and that should never affect your in game friendship. In the end, it's a matter of having fun though bud. Have fun with your friend and worry about the political shit later.

I don't think I have any friends with the cash to buy significant gil, and I can't bring myself to justify that I have a right to supplement my lack of playtime ability with wordly assets.

Every so often I get tells from random people saying "Hey XXX buys gil you gonna let gilbuyers be in your shell?" Answer would probably be yes, but they get flagged and I'd be looking for an excuse to let them go. If I can't find one other than they likely buy gil, they're an asset.

However, I still don't think that you're likely to find a gilbuyer who doesn't have other flags that would be incompatible with hanging around me. It's a character flaw to buy gil in my opinion, and it's not likely to be an isolated one. It shows a lack of respect for in-game efforts of others. While the game would probably be better in ways if teens with all the time in the world and no responsibility didn't run it, it ceases to be entertainment when wage-earning adults or silverspoon priviledged have the advantage of bringing the real them with them into a roleplaying game.

I would unfortunately be looking for any reason to dissociate with a gilbuyer, and would likely find it. If I found out that a close friend bought gil, I would have already tried to find those accessory flaws and not found them before I knew they bought. So the relationship would not likely terminate.

I don't know for sure who is a gil buyer. I can suspect people but I really don't care enough to follow them around and see what they do. Once they are out of my party I'm not going to keep tabs on them. I recently started another mule and I was curious how hard it really was for a new player to make money ingame. After 1.5 weeks he has ~570k gil with only a level 10 job.

Now if I were to party play him most people would only see a rank 2, level 10, no subjob person that has above average gear, uses food and would be labeled as an obvious gil buyer. Don't be quick to judge.

All this gil buying thing we brought it upon ourselves.

When the players start this game they have just 500 gil and they get no help or instructions on how to aquire gil.

When they are in a PT or hang around the things they read are:

This guy is gimp. He has no armor, weapon, accesory or food.

The new/old player feels obligated to get Impossibly Expensive items so he doesn't fall in that category everyone seems to muck so much. Gimps...

So, if he doesn't get invited or get any help for his Nms or BCs his 1st option to get equipment/spells will be to buy gil. And he will do it to get out of that stereotype, trash talked by server society. Sad, but true.

If players weren't so interested/judging in other players equipment, the obligatory need to have the best wouldn't be the player's 1st priority. Lessening the NEED to get money fast to be in par with leet players.
