I made the conscious decision to go with Liquidweb when I was looking to move QCDN off of it's old host. I did realize at the time that the Liquidweb VPS I plan is providing more resources than are needed. However, moving QCDN isn't something I wish to do all that often, thus going with a hosting plan that provides room for growth was the decision I made. While I can appreciate you guys looking out for QCDN and proposing what may be a better value, I do have to say that the hosting solution is a done deal.
I think the whole gil seller ad argument started with the wrong premise.
Currently QCDN is in the second week of displaying ads. At this time there is really no good way to tell what works well and what doesn't. I think it would be worth it to wait and see what happens after a four week period.
I do believe that when the AdSense ads first showed up people were clicking ads just out of curiosity to see some of the stuff they are interested in. At that time gil seller AdSense ads received a lot of clicks, in part due to their somewhat deceiving advertisting (i.e. 1M gil for $5.99, but once you clicked you found out that it was only $5.99/M if you bought 100M, if you really only wanted 1M it was like $20 or whatever).
The main points are:
1. QCDN will not be moved to a different host.
2. QCDN will in the long term stay online with or without gil seller ads.
3. The goal is to have ads that are unobtrusive.
4. People buy gil, whether QCDN displays gil seller ads or not.
5. If the current IGE ad brings in sufficient amount of cash to run QCDN, then it may be worth it to let it stay and get rid of the AdSense ads instead.
6. In the near future (likely this year) there will be a way for people to donate to QCDN and thus remove ad displays for themselves.
I think between those points everyone will receive a solution they can live with. I can't say it often enough, the whole ad thing is totally new to QCDN, and it will take some time for it to settle in.
I am activly working on a completely different ad solution that would make QCDN more attractive to certain sponsors. This does require some changes to the vbulletin code to allow for better search engine indexing of QCDN pages, which is not achievable in the short term (days). The main goal is to get more pages indexed.
Be that as it may. I am also interested in expanding QCDN both in terms of services offered to the users, as well as obtaining more users, and more active users. I believe that it is in the current users' benefit to expand the board (more activity on the AH, Event Scheduling, and LS Recruiting forums).
Some of this expansion will have to rely on current users telling those who are not active QCDN users yet to come on over and check it out. Some of the expansion will rely on me as the admin adding new features and making the board more attractive (i.e. monthly contests) to current and future users.
Expanding the board costs money, more money than I am comfortable spending out of pocket. To me that doesn't mean that this exansion shouldn't be done, to me it means that I just need to find the cash elsewere, and preferably without to tick off the user base. I am trying very hard to do just that.
