I know, old topic, but I thought that I could maybe create a more direct version to figure out what I'd really like to know... (and please try to be civil, k?)

Everyone's opinion on "Gimped" is different..wether it be an odd subjob, a subjob underlevelled by 5, or a subjob underlevelled by 1. Even some people consider THF without SH "gimped"

So, what is everyone's opinion? Maybe I'm too forgiving, but I only see gimped as someone lacking in certain equipment slots or in things that are generally seen as VERY USEFUL [plus affordable] to that job (i.e. Durandal, for 71+ PLD, is extremely cheap to my knowledge, and gives massive vit to boot - there shouldn't be a reason not to have it)

My other outlook on gimped, regarding subjobs - if it's an odd subjob, so be it, as long as it works. If it's underlevelled by one or two (or maybe a little more), I might forgive it, unless they miss out on a key spell or job ability...then it may annoy me a little bit.

I personally don't see THFs or NINs without SH being "gimped". Maybe it's just me, but the "every one of them should have a SH" just doesn't work. If 8m was easy to get, SH would cost 40m+, easy as that.

Opinions?

Sure below par equipment will give a player the title 'gimped'...Or so it seems to the generall mass.

IMO a gimp player is one who cannot cooperate with those in the party. One that doesn't listen and disrupts the pattern for kills...The most common situation for this is during skillchains. People who consistantly refuse to flash a TP macro, blackmages who seemingly never land a burst. Then there are redmages who don't keep refresh up to date. Paladins who don't provoke. Rangers and Thieves who pull slowly between kills. White mages who blow their entire mp pool on one fight.

It's all about how a person plays their job. Someone can have gimp gear and still play reasonably well.

But as gimp as the gear gets.......

............Nothing..........beats a true noob who will not listen.

I dunno. A thf w/o a SH at high lvls aka 65+ I would almost consider gimp. As I would a melee w/o hauby/hauberk 65+. Those 2 pieces of equipment make a huge difference in performance imo. At least I "USED" to think that before the price of both pieces doubled. Now I dont know what I think. But generally I would agree. Under par subjobs really piss me off.

But isn't a Haubergeon/Hauberk less than 1/3rd the price of SH? That being said, it's still considerably tougher to get. If THFs and NINs were to all need SH, wouldn't all WAR/SAM/etc need Haubergeon/Hauberk +1 to even out the effort of cost? Just wondering.

Dowzer - I totally agree with the player's attitude being a huge thing, though if a player wore terribly underlevelled equipment (good example being those people in Yhoator who uses Brass Harness..) wouldn't that mean he has no regard for the well-being of the party, thusly giving them a bad attitude?

Yes and no, it all depends on the situation.

Someone who doesn't take the time to farm for 'decent' equip like SH and Haub, should be /poked at. However I have seen THF's who have no trouble gaining TP, while wearing a Cotehardie. I've also seen DRGs and THFs who work well with an Assault Jerkin. DRK WAR SAM on the other hand - Haub or gimp.

Now, say you ask your friend to fill a spot in your party but they don't have the gear for it. Your friend is a very skilled player but they aren't planning to complete this job, so they buy under levelled gear.

Lets say your friend is a White mage around level 50. They buy electrum rings, seers set, and any other cheap and under levelled gear for that matter.

A reasonably skilled WHM with gimp gear can keep a party going without a problem and keep a consistant chain 5. Does this mean they are gimped, just because of under levelled gear?

Imo: Equipment, skill, and attitude all play a role in earning the title of "Gimp".

Underleveled subjobs no matter what is as gimp as it gets. It shows lack of care. People with less than average gear could really try their hardest and that's the best they can do/get for their character. (Even though I will never buy that =p)

But no one has ANY excuse for an underleveled subjob in an xp party. One level or 20 levels IDC don't bring that shit around me.

Anything below a 60-75% acc rate is gimp.
Not having spells or key pieces of gear (Dark Staff Light staff)
Missing pieces of gear altogether.
Vastly inaproptiate subjob. (Needs to be justified by more then Duel Weild and cause its cool)
Not eating food.
Not having properly set up macros. (Skill of a player here)
Not using ja's/tp to their fullest. (Again a gauge of skill)

And what Vang says, underlevled subjob shows a lack of caring, it is THE biggest sign of gimpness. If they do not care about themselves I sure as hell do not want my EXP to be reliant on them.

You are just looking at the price. I tend to not base what equips one needs to be based off price. Certain jobs have different equip they need to work well in a pt situation. You are right SH is about double what a haub is. However I dont want to pick up <insert job that uses SH> atm till I can buy the equipment to play it not gimp and imo that includes picking up a SH.

I understand if not EVERYONE can get the best gear for their job when it becomes available. But that leaves me with two opinions of what needs to happen. Regarding the present: Get the next best thing! Regarding the future: Get that excellent piece of equipment if it's still of use.

No excuses. You can always take time off from other activities to make money one way or the other.

"I'm poor."

"Go farm, craft, etc."

The true gimp is the one that has no good excuses.
I understand if it's your first job and you just can't get the funds for that SH at 57. You could take the time to make that happen, but you'd rather move forward and get it ASAP. Fine. But get it ASAP...No more excuses.
Stop what you're doing...Unless you feel it's good enough to keep gimping yourself and others. Too gimpy? See ya. Wouldn't want to be ya.

Special note for RNG, NIN, mages...
You don't get invited to a party because it's ok to be cheap. Use your ninjitsu, don't conserve it. Use the best arrows and bolts for your level. And have spells current for your level.

A RNG spamming arrows from 20 levels ago just pisses me off. A NIN that tries to conserve Shihei while tasked with tanking. A WHM that doesn't have Stona when fighting Cockatrice MOBs...If that's you, you've got work to do.
That's gimp. That's part of your job, and you fail at it.

People who don't take make the effort to be the best they possibly can(if they have the means to, that is,) are gimp. They're voluntarily skipping out on being better. Thats the sole definition right there.

Theres a difference between not being able to afford Luxurious Item #230021, and being able to, but not buying it.

I'm going to have to flat-out disagree with anyone who says you need SH to not be gimp. That's absurd. IMNSHO, any piece of equipment that costs over 1.5M is a luxury item, and (for xp sessions) is not required in the least.

If a NIN w/o SH is gimp, then no NIN w/o SH would be capable of getting decent xp / hour. To me, gimp means not being able to perform your job. I somewhat agree with skaw regarding people doing the best they possibly can, but I would put a lower cap on what someone could *possibly* do. If you can't get an item that costs 1 mil, you need to reevaluate what you're doing to make gil in this game, or you need to stop leveling and take the freaking 10-20 hours it would take to easily get 1 mil. If you don't have time to get that 1 mil, then you don't have time to level.

I won't comment on end-game activities, because I'm quite the little elitistaru. If you don't have this stuff for end-game... you suck at life.

Underleveled subs are only ok if it's 1 level, and you're not missing a key ability from it, but I don't consider an underleveled sub gimp. Going back to my definition of gimp, a few hp, mp, and *maybe* one stat point will not make you gimp. It just makes you lazy, and I don't want to play with lazy people.

Odd subjobs could make you gimp, depending on what they are. If you're missing out on JA's or Spells that could improve the performance of the party, then you're a gimp.

Thieves don't need scorpion harnesses until they start soloing. Most thieves out there will be eating sushi, and as such, they do not need anything but a pair of snipers and a life belt on their melee set. CCB+1, bone knife+1...there are other ways to get some cheap acc in there, but 20 acc+sushi=you're pretty set. I'd rather see every thief out there in an assault jerkin, because I guarantee you that it is more useful to a thief than SH is unless that thief is brave enough to xp while eating attack food.

A gimp isn't someone who isn't the best they can be. None of you all are the best you can be. Level your parrying, gimps. Don't play monk until you have str merits, gimps. Gimp has nothing to do with not being the best.

Gimp is a functional term. Do they hurt xp? Measurably hurt it. Measurably, as in the party fails because they can't cut it--not as in "oh they doesn't have SH I'm just SURE he WOULD be a failure if we invited them. If they are incapable of partying successfully because of something they're not doing or don't have...that is gimp. It is HARD to be gimp in this game. It is HARD to be inadequately equipped. It is EASY to equip the wrong things and to make the wrong decisions. That's not really gimp though. That's just poor decision-making.

Most players aren't gimp. MMO ratracers just run under a flawed definition of the term. Most players aren't incapable, which is the true meaning of the word. They just make bad decisions. So they're stupid, not handicapped.

Whm's not purchasing raise cuz "why would they spend
money just to help others" are gimped in the head.

(Oh yes, I've talked to a few of thoose....)

Aslong as there is a nice smooth sc in the beginning,
(regular partysetup), without people running around
with five <calls>, a wierd shout, then ws, I'm happy.

Done. B)

Guard of 171, which is exceptionally high for Guard. Ask around. And when I'm not partying or helping people out, I'm skilling up guard, all the time. Or atleast attempting to. Unfriendly skill when it comes to leveling. What's your parry at?

No where did I say you need to be the best, but voluntarily not making yourself better when you have the capability to; thats being gimp. Notice I even mentioned the difference about physically unable to do so, and willfully not doing so. If you can afford HQ, go for it. Theres no loss, and it only betters your performance.

edit: oh man, I just realized I typed out the same thing twice in different wording.

I'd agree with this statement. Leveling THF in the jungle at about the lv 30ish range, our whm left and we got a replacement. I was dismayed when he showed up wearing an Empy pin, leaping boots, Saintly ringsX2 and nothing else. Best damn whm I've seen at that level...hands down. I wish I could remember his name. Skill makes up for alot.

Still, not having appropriate gear for the job and level is gimp in most circumstances. Not having all the +1's or the rare HNM dropped item, of which only a dozen exist on the server, is not gimp.

I think I would be a HUGE ass gimp in front of everyone here^^ I dont level anymore so I dont mind. I know I have sucky gear for my level and have yet to get all my AFs. (omg lvl 66 rdm with not all Afs, omg kill him) Yes I AM LAZYYYYY and dont want to spend hours and hours farming. I only play 2 days a week now and only about 6-7 hours at a time so I dont really want to spent that time doing boring stuff. Sorry if thats offensive to some people lol. not everyone wants to be "the best" in this game. But if you can farm and craft for hours at a time, good for you. Just dont insult me for not doing what you do. I have gotten tells telling me to stop doing what im doing and get better gear. Wtf, im in jeuno minding my own businnes, leave me alone >.>
