"Gimped"

Gimp is where you are subbing something that totally sucks for party also do something stupid on purpose again and again.I don't think a 10 mil gil SH or a Hauby is necessary... to one job it may seem a durandel is gimp but on the other hand the pld might be using something that hits twice or harder to keep hate better. Some people prefer attack over accuracy since accuracy is avaible on almost all slots and on sushi by a good amount.

I can almost ALMOST understand THFs not having a harness now a days at 57 with the nerfing of Valk Emp. Most *Real* Thfs funded their harness on their first job camping him.

God bless the real Thfs. <3

When the Emp was nerfed, I stopped expecting the harness as well. I know alot of THFs that spent a couple weeks camping him for their harnesses, and I honestly cant think of a meathod beyond an existing craft that could make the gil at the speed hairpins did.

Personally I don't notice what people wear as much because I have unrealistic expectations and just have to look the other way most of the time. In reguards to subjob, I can deal with someone having an uncapped subjob if it is a standard one, but if a person is using a questionable SJ, it had best be capped.

Example:
40THF/18NIN -- OK
40THF/20BLM -- OK...
40THF/19BLM -- GTFO

If someone wants to try something out of the norm, fine, just make it look like it was on purpose, and not just because it is your 2nd highest level job.

Ive been tyring to get a SH now for around 5 months.....Now that its doubled im finally about to give up and lvl another job or just maybe lvl w/o it...which i have refused and been lvl 60 for 5 months...I just cant stand not having the best equip or the equip i need, and i definatly do not want to be considered a gimp.

Bah!
Go with a Black Cotehardie, Venerer, Sniper, Life Belt and some sushi.
That's more then enough imo if you can't afford a SH.
(Or try "Lady luck" with some blms with Kindred Seals til you get a claw.)

Thanks for your input everyone. ^^
And Osse....pretty sure WHM can't wear LLs. XD

I'm not entirely bothered about an -underleveled- sub, as long as the sub isn't missing any important spells or abilitys, for example: BLM66/WHM31, it's missing the fundamentally most important spell on that sub, Erase. That's gimped in my opinion.

Alot of gear gimpage I hate too, eg: MND gear in places that could have easily, and cheaply, have been Int gear instead (Justice Badge, instead of a Black Neckerchief.)

Other than that, the inability to level their sub, or play to the jobs potential in a party bugs me...

Rant over.

Hmmm, I think a 'gimp' is someone crusing around in an XP party with thier starting race gear at level 30 as a Tank ;)

Honestly, I think it's all a matter of perspective. Subjobs I think you should have close to (5 levels max low) up till level 37. After that I find little to no excuses. I can't say that if a player is leveling a job up to 37 for a sub of another job. That they are just seeking out one thing. I think people who say because of thier job (in one case, PLD) say they don't need to be up to date (ie: skip an armor upgrade completely), since they were a PLD they could always get Invites... (That burned me up to no end, since I myself am a main PLD). It wasn't the fact of the armor, it was more the fact of the attitude that came with the comment.

As For the SH for thief's... I think having one is cool, but if you don't, your not gimped. A person who is gimped would be like, someone who refuses (it's not that they don't know, they just don't care to know) to play thier job right. That's basicly player mentality/ability.

If a Thief came up to me and asked to get an invite, and wasn't useing a SH, and didn't have certain 'key' items, IE: Leeping/Winged Boots, Emp hairpen, etc... and we had a Ninja Tank, I would invite him... Since yes, he is a DD, however it's also their to dump hate. Personaly I skill up Marksmenship, which helps me 'a lot' with TP gain. Granted, I don't have an SH, but why would I need one if I can keep up to the other melee's? Am I gimped because of that? I don't think so. Every Party is different, and each player has thier own play style. If a person wants to try something out, like an unheard of subjob combo, cool, as long as you can pull it off ^^ But I would like the consideration that if you can't pull it off, you can switch to a different sub.

Also, from the two years this game has been out, the mentality of 'new and exciting' has dwindled down to the more "I have more Gil!"

I just don't see how having a straight set of equipment, would label someone as "Gimped". If a person had NQ equip for thier level, and could maintain their role just as well, then I don't see a reason for labeling them anything except a "player" unless attitude would determine otherwise (but that usualy just describes them as jerks).

I've seen topics on this site saying "*&#^# JAPS" or something to that effect. My personal thought to this is that they had the best mentality in this game that a community could have (at least in the beginning). Prices were fair, and were stable for a while (never really fluxuated till the PS2 Release). The Japanese players were all very helpful with providing what information they could with the limitations to the translater, and those that could speak english would always lend a hand to those of us just starting up with tips on leveling, armor, and food. Hardly anyone had the 'best of the best' gear, and no one really cared because we were all having fun. It was when people stoped enjoying themselves, and wanted 'high numbers' that it all became more apparent. Today, you rarely see a Ninja/Ranger, where as back then, it was common. Just about everyone now expects things of people regardless of thier play style.

To sum everything up... I think the word 'gimp' is best discribed as players who are unwilling to try, or too close minded to let some type of variaty come into play. Yes armor plays a part, but again, you don't need the top of the line stuff to do your job just as well as the person that has 25mil to dump into a job. You are only as good as your willingness to play your job to the best you can possibly do, with the time/finances you have (even if you fall short sometimes). If your unwilling to make the "effort" to do that... then yes... you are probably a gimp. It's a game, and if everyone is having fun, then who's really gimped?

I feel that being gimped is simply being unable to do your job correctly. Equipment is so variable that I think it should not have much of an impact on one's judgement of 'gimped'. Sure it aids the job and sure it helps you do a little bit better, but come on. Not everyone has the time to go farm or is lucky enough to have gil to buy this great equipment and when they buy gil because of the fact of lack of good equipment because of pressure from people in parties, people brand them with the name 'gil buyer' and bash them and stuff. It irritates the hell out of me! I admit that I don't have awsome equipment. I could use better earrings and rings and stuff, but I manage to get buy and I have some of the worst luck! NM's are like my worst point so camping them is out. Everytime I farm I either end up dieing sevreal times, get a party invite, have to help my Ls/friend, or just somehting random occurs IRL. No, I don't buy gil, no I don't borrow or anything I just somehow scrape by, but not everyone is like I am. Subjobs? Hmmm. I dunno. I partied with a Red Mage once whose Subjob was Lv.9 at Lv.34 and it was Summoner sub, but he still performed well in our party. He was very nice and all and he did his job perfectly well, in my opinion he was not gimped. Rather he was betetr than some players I've seen.

Gimp - Unable to play to the best of your abilities due to lack of decent/expected equipment and/or underleveled sub.

So they have the time to party, but no time to farm for equipment, or have have a leveled sub? If you compare that redmage, to a redmage with a leveled sub and up to par equipment and plays exactly the same as the first, the latter would do much better. Equipment either makes you or breaks you.

Neosquall knows from experience. Gimp ain't got good armor. And uses Iron Bolts from M&P in Upper Jeuno. :(

And Osse....pretty sure WHM can't wear LLs. XD

That's a few months back, so I am appearently remembering wrong on that one point. No big deal, the experience just illustrates my point. Gear just puts the upper cap on how well you can perform, it's still up to the player to reach that limit. It's only a real problem when the gear puts that cap at a level too low for reasonable play.

I think most people have covered the issue very well as far as skill, subjob etc. But I'd like to add my opinion on gear.

I try to have close to the best gear for my lvl. True I don't have a PCC or HQ snipers, but I mean reasonably. I have enough for my second Grace Ring (52 atm), but I am putting all my money towards crafting atm. My goal is that by lvl 60 I have a SH, Spectacles, Snipers x 2 (only 1 atm), Grace rings x2 etcetc. I plan on making the SH myself, which is millions more gil in BC and LC on top of a V. Claw. This is the type of gear I want to have, but not because if I don't I'd be a gimp, or because I want to be leet and hot. Im a taru we look straight up ugly in SH. I want this type of a gear because it is a challenge, it takes time and effort and is something I can take pride in. Any THF can be effective with all this gear, I have no problems getting enough TP to SC every fight, it doesnt speed up how quickly I can set up SATA. If anything good gear is effective at times for hiding your faults in maximum skill (ie as Skaw mentioned things like capping Guard, Parry, Marks).

Having very good gear is not done out of some fear of gimpness, its about setting a challenge and meeting it. Being gimp is a product of apathy and stupidity, it is reflected in a lack of gear and spells that are essential to you performing your role in a pt, where your performance slows down exp at a fairly noticeable rate, it is reflected in your failure to perform your other roles as well (tanking, healing, support, DD etc.).

Just an opinion.Nins and thiefs with a scorpion harness are more common these days than the ones who have their Afs done.I remember the days when like 2 3 thfs or nins had a Sh and they actually stood out but now like everyone is read... boring >_<
