Sortof hit me today (after nearly two years...), while I was argueing with Stouter over some stupid sh-!t that I shouldn't have even argued over in the first place....is it worth helping people if you don't get something out of it in the end? Alot of people say they help people because they feel it's the right thing to do, I try to do the same whenever possible..and yes, it's great to know someone was helped, but is it worth the trouble, ever? Nowadays, virtually no one seems to remember the help they've been given, or the name of the person who helped them take some big step ingame...it seems, sad to say, like helping anyone is absolutely pointless if all you get in the end is some memory that you alone will remember. I've spent far too much time helping people think they've never met me, even if I travelled across four zones to toss a raise III, solo'd them a coffer key or AFNM, gotten them SJ items, or trekked out and spent (x) hour helping get someone a Joyeuse or Assault Jerkin when I instead could've been spending time with people I could call a friend.

Aly, Eili, Flamey, Iggie, Ihryia, Kat, Meeze, Mistra, Neo-FFVIIIfanboyguy, Odon, Rayn, Rones, Sabs, Sethala, Skaw, Stou, Svina, Teppo, Tyr, Vet, Weapon, and Zalt [andotherpeoplewhoIstupidlycan'trattleoffthetopofmyhead><]...I'm sorry for the times I've gone and helped some person whom forgot me within the day, when I could be screwing around with an actual friend elsewhere. Even worse, I'm no longer friends with some of you, and some I won't ever get to hang out with ever again (unless I goto WoW, which my computer is too crappy to do..)

All I can really say is that I'm sorry for putting helping random idiots ahead of friends, but sorry really just doesn't feel like it's saying enough in the end..

*Phraust and Vang scare me too much to wanna consider friends.

And that's about all I hafto say..

A person who I helped with for theirs, or a friends Decimation (even though the setup they had could take down Yallery Brown with np lol) I still talk to them..just recently we talked about warrior/mage class jobs, random things, etc.. I dont expect anything in return, I just like fun NM's whether they drop items or not. CC'd the person recently as well at an HNM, we struck up a good convo that made the time pass nicely :)

Also, my buddy Ompalumpa..I talk to him regularly whenever I'm not busy (rare)
He was on WHM a while ago in the Temple and out of the blue, asked me to help with Death From Above....(Didn't even know who he was at the time)

Now if you know me........I'm gonna wanna fight an NM called Death from Above lololol Got the dagger for 'em on first try and we've been cool ever since. :D

Don't under-estimate people \(¯—¯)/

Ishaela. even though i haven't experienced this. ive seen it first hand. I myself am willing to help out anyone that has helped me out in the past. I lucked up and gotten into a great LS that is willing to help out one another. Ive spent as much time as possible camping VE to help out a LS memeber that has helped me or going to xarcabard to help a LS (as a lvl 41war mind you) just becuase they helped me out in the past. I haven't had the time to help out people that just /sh for help because im not really that high enough lvl to help out to begin with. what im trying to say is that anyone that doesn't help out someone that has helped them out is an asshat straight up. I take the time to remember who was willing to help me and help out in return even though its very seldom that ever happens. Just to let ya know there are still a few of us that appreciate what other people do for them. well hope to see ya ingame. peace out

Oh ho ho, yeah fuck you too, lol. hehe, j/k.

I never took any of that stuff to heart. It's good just knowing a person and saying hi or using odd emotes on each other even if it was for a few seconds.

But hey listen, if you ever get bored my AIMname is right thur. Hit me up. ;D

Whatever happened to "A good deed is its own reward?" I don't think it's a waste to help people, even if they don't remember your name when you bump into each other down the road.

There's too many people in game, and you need too much help to do too many things to even come close to remembering everyone.

There's a japanese rdm named Judea that I got teamed up with to get a couple kazaam keys with on lucy a year and a half ago. Not sure why I remember him, but I do, and wave when I see him. I'm pretty sure he doesn't remember me.

Random strangers helping me with crap I sometimes forget names. I normally remember friends helping me though. I remember Hyori and Slacker killing boreal mobs for me for G2 way back on stouter. I remember the old TS gang killing my brd AF3 mob while we were screwing around in davoi trying to farm quake and stonega II. I remember ithenas and a couple others coming to help me farm a castle oz key for my bard AF, and I remember then ending up dead and me and a thief that was in the area that offered to help (I think Mizterpayne) finishing off a yagudo via lullaby > SATA, and Hyori trekking out to R3 the dead. I remember Demir helping me kill some crawlers before a fafnir hunt way back in ultima, I had been slowly soloing about half a dozen a day for a couple weeks, and he showed as I finished one off, got one swing in and it dropped my egg. How many of these people remember these things? I haven't a clue.

There's also friendships that form from doing things with strangers. Way back when I farmed hktk eyes with Kriist and Myihta, and I only knew them from the few weeks I had seen their names in ls chat. And I still talk with Wakmidget to this day after helping him with Brd AF weapon over a year ago.

You'll forget some people you help, some people you help will forget you. You'll forget some people that help you, and some of them will forget you. You will remember some, and they will remember you, and this is often how you make friends. Look through your entire list of people Ish, and try and remember the first time you met them all. I'm sure a lot of them were strangers you helped with something, or helped you with something.

For some reason this thread has made me look up this:

Hmm.. I don't think its a big deal personally. I help people all the time, whether it be for no particular reason or that I may need something out of it, or need their help with something.

Help is help, everyone needs it, and ideally it should be given freely. FFXI is a game you simply can't play without the help of others, it's the way it's designed. Perhaps that's one of the reasons I still enjoy this game so much. (taking breaks helps too :P )

*adding*
Sometimes you just cant help everyone back who might have helped you at some point. For me sadly, a lot of the people that have helped me in the past have since quit the game. I'm sure this isn't too uncommon among others, but there's just not much I or anyone else can do about that. People shouldn't expect you to return the favor, but you should find some way to "become even" in some way if possible with those that are still around. Though for me, if someone says "Thank you" that's really all I need to hear, just some acknowledgment. So you shouldnt feel obligated to return the favor, but doing so is just a nice sentiment.

I dont realy care if someone remembers my name after I helped them, I have helped many and I can not remember all of them, nor can I remember all that have helped me, (I try, usally I will be in a goup with someone and know I reconise there name from help but cant remember from what, I usally ask them and have a fun convo. trying to figure it out).

The reason I help people is because that is what FFXI is about, building partys and working together to accomplish things that could not otherwise be done. I remember when I need my subjob items, my 2-3 dragon, Kazham keys, Delkfert tower run, G1/2/3 and the list goes on, I didnt do any of those things alone and I hope that when I help someone else get something they will remember, not my name, but that this game is about teamwork and carry that to the next group they meet.

I will say it is nice when someone remembers me, but there is way to much you need help with in this game to keep them all in my head, so Thank You all to those who help, not just me but anyone, It is the kind of player that can make this game great of make it suck, so far I'm enjoying my experance in Vana'diel

I enjoy helping people, even if they are random, or someone who i had a dunes pt with that needs there sub job items (which drop easily with th2), as long as those people appreciate that someone is helping them and learn to reciprocate to others (not even me necessarily) and they arent annoying to be around (ie super annoying ungrateful noobs).

I know I wouldnt be where I am today if someone didnt help me get there, not that I am completely reliant on others, far from it, but I'm not the player I would have been if no one ever helped me.

.......ie Lucy and Ele killing Death from Above for me and helping me farm pop item, Hadoxen and taeketsu back in kazham key days, Danpen for G1 ... and many other things, Hal and Neyla for good BST talk and Attowha map.....

I<3u2Ish. ; ;

I help tons of people on anything I can solo. Most of them LS-mates, but some random people. Like one of my really good friends now Absinthea was just a normal person who I happened to help one day. And now she's in my LS, borrowing my RSE, and generally helps me have a really good time in FFXI. I<3her much. In fact, a lot of my friends are just random people I started hanging out with one day. There are some I don't remember, and some that don't remember me, but I can't expect everyone to have my memory. lol.

Just be your merry self, Ish. People remember good times more than the items. :3

i'm one of those guys that if you see me outside of jeuno and i'm not in a xp party chances are i'm really fing board or off to make money. So if i'm asked to help, i'm going to come no matter how it turns out. hell when i was skilling up scythe through VD's i kept my inv full on purpose and skilled up on mobs that dropped subjob quest items, each time one dropped i made a shout {do you need it}.

hell the last time i was in in VD's it was jags other character that was wanting his skull. I took him where we needed to go, got my thf 2 out there and ran around slotering bones till we got what we needed then i d2'd him back to selbina. We competed against a whole LS for over an hour trying to get it, and after i d2'd him i asked them if they wanted thf help.

I don't expect people to remember me, and lol don't expect me to remember everyone i help. I have the memory span of a gold fish ~10 seconds. This game is about having fun, if your having fun while helping someone more to ya. That was hella fun, trying to claim against a whole ls lol. I <3 the rush.

3/4's of my friends in my friendlist have came from either me helping them or them helping me. there are lots of ways to help someone other then going with them somewhere and killing something they need. Give them advice on playing there job to the fullest, equipment advice, macro advice, directions to somewhere, quest info. If you think just going to kill a NM for someone is the only way to help someone, your DEAD WRONG! Helping someone is for you personal bennifit not theirs. hell, i still help bumble buddy even after the shit we went through.

If you think the only people you should help are your "friends" of today, then your missing out on a whole lot of fun in this game, and potential help later down the road.

I think there is one person i would stop whatever i was doing, leave in the middle of a party whatever if this person asked ME for help (they know who they are, i been waiting for that call for 9 months now). I thank those that have helped this person, they got to do something i've always wanted to do, and i made this friend by getting help from them a complete stranger to me until that day.

<3 Ish. That is all ...

you and i are in the same boat ish. i know exactly how u feel. i usedto help every person i came across in the game. that stopped awhile ago cause the effort isnt seem appriciated. i got into an argument with a friend, whom i think quit while i was mia, about this. he was out helping people left and right. i told him to be careful or people will begin to think of him as a tool for their own advancement. itsgoodto have ahelping attitude but placing yourself at the beck-and-call of others like he did is only allowing yourself to be used.

I help people all the time and ask nothing in return. I don't care if they even give me a /wave the next time they see me, be it the next day or four months later. I enjoy it and I'm just as likely to forget about them as they are to forget about me. I'm horrible with names.

I don't care if it's someone with a question mark by their name in Windurst, someone needing for items the subjob quest, Kazham access or G1, or if it's someone asking me to help them with mob X so they can get their quested weapon skill. 40 gil to your name or 40 million, makes no difference to me. If I have the time and you have the info, we're well on our way.

Mercenaries can all go fuck themselves.

Yea, I've found that helping ppl can be so much fun and is rewarding personally by just seeing the ones your helping get what they wanted.

<3 Neyla. You are by far one of the best people I've met ingame as far as helping others. I can totally back you up on that.

I agree with Hal on this one.

I know many people that I am close to that need help with things in-game and tend to think of them first over random people /shout-ing. I try to be a thoughtful listener, and when there is an moment to assist someone else and their goals, I grab them by the subligear and get going. It's not about attaining anything tangible, but multiplying the joys of success, and laughing at defeat.

Hey Ishaela, you needn't apologise. Remember back when I was a newbie Whm who hit 25 and spent day and night in Shakrami tossing out cures and raises, sneaks and invis? You appreciated random acts of kindness back then, and sent me a nice tell, gave me what was an exorbitant amount of gil and loot, and encouraged me to be a nice player. We've been friends ever since, and I'm still the kind of player that dismounts a chocobo to raise a stranger. You should help people just because you can. Maybe some will forget you. Maybe most will. A handfull won't though, and those handfuls will be good friends. You, Klank, Chippie, and several others that left the game for WoW became good friends because some stranger helped them for no reason at all. I think I turned out to be a pretty likeable player, and a large part of that is your doing. If you want a community of people who help others just because they can, you have to lead by example.

I reached that conclusion/stage of cynicism a long long time ago... i think it's just a really long phase. today while i was in jeuno I saw a 50 pld lfg and i looked at his Seacom, he needed G1 items so i went and solo'd explosures for half an hour and i don't expect him to remember anymore. If you're only doing a deed because you expect someone to thank you down the road i've had ONE single person out of hundreds of people i've randomly helped, died for got up and died again for, solo'd coffer keys for or AFNM's.
I help people behind me because Paleblue, Rayn, Pauk, Cyronae and a few complete strangers came and helped me with things when i was a lowbie.
The game wouldn't work if high levels didn't help lowbies who had no high level friends to help.
