The site leverages the powerful Google Maps API to create a revolutionary scaled map with detail and precision never before seen on the Internet. A user can display any number of ore, herbs, or, treasure. Currently there are more than 15,000 resources in the database. All this, on one easy to navigate page.'"
I wonder if something like this would be possible for FFXI, given the way the maps and zones are. Looking at the WoW map, I would say all the "drastic" colour changes are zones themselves, and stitched together.

Having never played/seen WoW, how did they come up with "satellite-style" images of the zones?

Could we do the same thing with Vana'diel? I thought maybe a limited use mule with the "skywalking" hack could look down and take screenshots of the terrain below, or if someone were to take that picture of Vana'diel from orbit(if anyone remembers seeing it), and somehow bring more detail to it via a photoshop program, it may be possible.

I use Vana'diel atlas on my laptop beside me for maps/NM spawns, and it's very useful, but given the resources available to us as gamers, and computer users, is this kind of thing really far beyond our reach?

Just looking for opinions & suggestions. Maybe an enterprising person will hit upon a novel way of doing this easily. Such a resource would not only be useful, but bring fame and (no) fortune to its maker.

That is just sick and wrong. Next they're gonna have live Google Earth-style feedback where you can zoom in on an orc having sex in his castle with 3 bangin' night elves while his undead butler snorts crack off someone's breastplate.

Actually, that doesn't sound too bad...

I can tell you how it was made.

WoW has a minimap in the upper right corner of the screen. By stitching together hundreds of minimaps you get so see what you see here :)

I don't see that as possible for ffxi hehe.

On a slightly more important note, Daryous is my mule's name, because Darius and Daryus were already taken. Now I see one of the jerks who did it. If you ever need a veteran woodworker, don't talk to my mule! >: (

The WoW map is just too slow, even on broadband.
In WoW all locations for herbs and ore and whatever can be loaded into the local client from freely available flat file databases that are floating around. That way you can have all the locations in your in-game map and have no real need for wowmap.

The effort is cool, it's just not all that practical for WoW anymore. May still work well for FFXI maybe, if someone would create an overview image of Vanadiel.

There's also a version of this for FFXI called the "Vana'diel Cartography Project" in the forums at the windower's website. Basically it will replace all of your in game maps with those from FFXI-Atlas.com and grant you the lovely access to all NM spawns, coffer/chest spawns, and mining/logging/harvesting points. Also it includes key areas of interest such as quest ???s and entrance and exit patterns for confusing places like quicksand caves.

This game has zones so I doubt you could make a map like that, with WoW there are only a handful of zones, between continents, instances, and a bare handful of other things. (IE the deeprun tram)

Basicaly that means I am not sure if all the zones match up evenly.

Gatherer UI FTW.

Orchid/Nicolette posted about that in this forum just a little while ago. With just some dat swapping you can have pretty much all that stuff you were mentioning.
