Does grammer matte to you when you PT? I mean do u get mad if a guy cant spell worth shit (like me ; ;) or uses "shortcuts? Like u, k, PT, woot? I dont care if a guy cant spell but when his invite looks like this:

hI1 Pary in teh vallkum duns? thef, pal,wm?
I get kind of worried.

I usually don't care but there are some cases where it's to the point I can barely understand it. L33t speak creeps the shit out of me and worries me but I usually let the person prove how well they play rather than their grasp on the english language before I stop inviting them into parties.

Innocent until proven guilty after all :D

I wonder how many 10-13 year olds actually play this game and dont know how to type that well and how many older ppl are just complete idiots.

Sometimes it bothers me when someone constantly misspells words. Im no spelling expert and i dont expect anyone else to be. Shortcuts make my cry when people say them wrong (WMG, BMG, PAL, etc.)

Typos don't bother me. Everybody makes the occasional typo - esp. when typing too fast. I have the PS2 version and I notice the system seems to use keyboard polling/scanning instead of interrupts like a PC. That means when there is a lot of activity and the system and game start to lag, the keyboard starts misbehaving -- either missing keystrokes, or repeating a keystroke many times so words come out like thhhhiiiiiiiiissssss (arrrgh).

Poor use of language, on the other hand, can make me worry. I realize it's bad to generalize and that there will always be exceptions (and I know several). But they are called 'generalzations' for a reason... because *generally* they tend to be good predicters of what you may be in for (yeah, I know a preposition is the wrong kind of word to end a sentence with) ;)

Yes and no. For the most part, I don't care about typos unless the person is really pissing me off in some other way. Sometimes I can't understand what people are saying due to some pretty simple typo (usually a word spelled phonetically) and probably come across as being arrogant (I may be arrogant, but in this case it's just a misunderstanding :twisted:), but it's just because English isn't my first language, and when I see some word that doesn't instantly make sense to my brain, I revert to Spanish phonetics, and don't conect what I'm reading with what the word means. :shock:

On the other hand, if I can't make out what you're saying without considerable effort, it's a problem. I don't expect perfect spelling and grammar, but geez...I am always surprised at how tough it is for otherwise competent adults to communicate really simple ideas in plain writing. :(

Language is fluid, and IMO the rules are just a tool to help you communicate better--you shouldn't be a slave to the rules just for the rules' sake.

To me it's important, especially considering that my native language is being butchered where I am in its written form in schools. It's up to the point where our government gives more importance to good grammar than the content of a text in their evaluations. And with the introduction of automated spelling correctors... No one really cares anymore.

But I'd really like to see a spelling corrector successfully translate l33t sp34k into proper English. That'll be the day. :)

it keeps happening somehow to me on the ps2 keyboard that it goes like thhhhhiiss, but other then that i mostly fix my typos or atleast try if i don't know how to spell it.

If I got an invite like that I would almost certainly ignore/decline it. I don't clain to have perfect spelling or grammar so I am usually ok with minor grammatical and spelling errors but sheesh... I guess maybe I am just old but I can't even read that :oops:

Shortcuts make my cry when people say them wrong (WMG, BMG, PAL, etc.)
Agreed!!

Most of it doesn't bother me too much. There is one abbr that I extremely hate though - for some odd reason.

ur = your

The freaking letters are all on the top row and it takes minimal effort to hit them and not make yourself look like trash. For some reason, that just hits me wrong..

I admit, I judge people on their writing ability. It's the byproduct of my time in pursuit of a teaching degree before I joined the newspaper trade.

I try to relax by telling myself they're hunting-and-pecking or using one of those PS2 controllers with the keyboard in the middle, but it doesn't help. I can understand using a few shortcuts when you're in the middle of a battle, but any other time? AAAAGH!

I'm not likely to avoid partying with someone unless I can't decipher the chat-shortened hieroglyphics passing for communication, but I treasure the players who use complete sentences and punctuation.

it depends on how someone's writing is presented to me.

Now I'm no english major, but when I see people using Messenger style speak like u ur wut, I see it as really lazy and kind of stupid . . . I mean yes, a lot of people are 13, and I don't want to sound like an old geezer, but god damnit . . . I never felt the need to truncate my words back when ICQ first reared its head.

So I don't accept that it's just because someone's young, I knew how to spell "you" when I was 6 and when the two missing key strokes are within four buttons I just shake my head.

It depends on the context.
gross misspellings i find acceptable:
In heat of battle:

Joebobtaru: thres a cwralr bhnd u! MOVE!

ok guys trying to warn the pt and typing faster than he is physically capable of doing correctly.

Jokingly in party:

Mistaya uses Fast Blade.
Mistaya Misses the Crawler.
Mistaya: OMGWTFBBQ i r teh sux0rs ;_;
(this is mainly with ppl from your LS or other close friends, not gonna do that in a pickup pt/ JP pt.)

If someone types like a 2 yr old talks in normal chat... i dunno i dont have any issues with him but i kinda roll my eyes. Never got a leetspeak pt invite but i would probably not take it because frankly i despise it. (hence why saying 'i r teh sux0rs' in pt would be a highly sarcastic joke)

so yeh situational. Not gonna skewer the man who cant spell, or the guy whose lagged' in jeuno, but at least try to spell like a human being o_o;

EDIT:

oh dear i understood that without looking twice ;_; heeeeellllp meeeee

I too hate it when people can't type correctly out of battle. In battle, it's completely understandable. Any other time, it's excuciating to read.

As for abbreviations, no word with four letters or less should be abbreviated, IMHO. And why is abbreviated such a long word? :shock:

I don't really make an issue of it in pick-up parties, but you can be sure that anybody with horrid typing is not making it onto my friends list.

/em searches "leetspeak" on Google.

Oh...dear...

I've seen these abbreviations all over the place, but I didn't realize it was part of a terminology system. Ugh, I would drop out of a party that started using that.
