Groovy new drug

Polen, M. R; Sidney, S.; Tekawa, I. S.; Sadler. M.; and Friedman, G. D. Health care use by frequent marijuana smokers who do not smoke tobacco. Western Journal of Medicine, 158:596-601. 1993.

Wu, T. C.; Tashkin, D. P.; Djahed, B.; and Rose, J. E. Pulmonary hazards of smoking marijuana as compared with tobacco. New England Journal of Medicine, 318: 347-351, 1988.

How bad it is compared to cigarettes depends on whom specifically you believe. It's long since been established that tobacco is bad for you, and at a bare minimum, marijuana is just as bad.

All drugs are bad for you. Alcohol and smoking is bad for you as well. They're bad for you on different degrees.

As a matter of fact, taking anything in a large amount is dangerous. Including, but not limited to, Oxygen (which is one of the most dangerous gases on earth. A very effective poison, basically) and water (can cause water poisoning), both which are vital for our survival.

Fair and balanced. pros and cons, yeses and nos. You guys can pick your sides all you want but it's still a matter of what you feel like believing.

Per usual moderation would appear to be the key.

Both sides are presented and as i said it really depends on where your head's at. The studies are as inconclusive as they are conclusive depending on who you feel like believing.

Regardless you're doing damage to your lungs no matter what you do these days. indoor/outdoor pollution is the leading cause of respitory troubles by quite a marginable ratio.

I am so naive on this topic, but I don't stay away from drugs for the reason of myself, but for my family. Would you like your son or daughter to be doing what your talking about?

Edit: Also, I've learned to care alot more for myself, so yes, I would stay away from it for myself as well.

In all honesty if they have the balls to try drugs that i cant, then by all means they can try them.

But moderating usage and/or amount is what I would do.

If the air is so bad, RoM, why throw even more chemicals into your body when you can help it?

And even if outdoor air is the leading cause of respiratory problems, I guarantee you that smoking anything causes more cancer than pollution. Between the two, I'd rather have asthma.

I tend to put relatively little faith in anything from a Cannabis research foundation, NORML, and a shrink who apparently forgot his oncology degree. Which is typically the trend with the people who say that there's no conclusive evidence regarding the cancer-causing characterestics of cannabis. (ALLITERATION IS GO!)

You'll pardon the source but it was the best (and fastest) example i could provide that plays to both sides of the issue. If you'd like me to get one-sided about it, here:

http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/408/60640.html

Existing studies do not support a link between the use of cannabis and heart disease, the leading cause of death in many Western countries, he adds. Furthermore, cannabis does not contain nicotine, a chemical contained in tobacco that is addicting and contributes to the risk of heart disease.

http://www.erowid.org/plants/cannabis/cannabis_info3.shtml

The cancer risk in the most part comes from the smoke, not from the cannabinoids. This is an artifact of the delivery system, not the drug (it comes from burning the plant material, not the cannabinoids).

I found the tables in that link quite enlightening.

PDF-love, get some. If the topic matters to you, read it.

I could go on... I also love how marijuana supposedly causes more cancer and makes cancer related illnesses worse when they use the shit as..... wait for it......

A theraputic drug for cancer and other terminally ill patients.

Chemo got you blowing mud and not holding anything down? Hit this.

Srsly.

I've done this dance before numerous times. I'm not all that interested in playing 'my god is better than your god' about it. Based on the bias on both sides of the information you can find on it i say with full certainty that it's completely inconclusive.

As a response to your actual post:

That's funny because i tend to put relatively little stock in to medical studies initiated and funded by a government that makes more money off of minor drug charges than murder/rape/abuse/etc charges combined. :P

As i said, everything in moderation. However there is no holy grail of fact on the topic. I was simply illustrating that there's more than enough credible information out there that plays to both sides of the debate.

I mean, you say 'that gives you cancer' ... Well no shit, what doesn't? As stated breathing is potentially cancerous. Cancer strikes down non-smokers and non-drug-users as well and quite often. Hell, coffee causes cancer too but you don't see me heckling you about it. :P

While i agree there's no point in making things worse for yourself i also leave room for that bus that's about to plow through your living room or some other random thing (like cancer, heart disease, etc) that just up and happen to people who lead otherwise healthy lives all the time.

Something's going to get you anyway, why not enjoy your time here a little if you've got the scrotum for it?

That is to say, you scold the drug user but not say... the adrenaline junky. Why, exactly is taking the risk steadily over time by burning one any different then flinging myself from a moving plane? Why is one more socially acceptable than another? Both are calculated risks.

The correct answer is: Only one is a cultural taboo.

Anyone who claims there are no ill effects of substance use are retarded. I'm not trying to make the claim at all. Conversely anyone who tells you they don't use any form of intoxicant at all is either flat out lying or amish.

It's not that i disagree, it's that i'm skewed a little more towards the big picture than most of you. The last thing i want is a pissing match over the topic, which is why i made an attempt at showing a reference that illustrated both sides of the conversation as incredibly moot.

Bad for you is bad for you, there really shouldn't be a distinction or a designation of 'acceptable' bad things for you. IMO if you can drink, smoke cigarettes, pump the air you breathe full of noxious chemicals and whatnot, and eat pesticides there's really no reason you shouldn't be able to burn one. :P

Regardless (and on topic): It's still a shite sight better than pumping your gut full of cough syrup/tablets/powdered DXM. At least the medical community can tell you exactly what that crap does without omitting any mitigating information or pandoring to it's financers.. :P

A fine question you pose. The answer, based on my limited research this afternoon, appears to be that modern industrialized nations living in the brilliant warmth of the age of enlightenment all but require you to poison yourself based on the services and products produced. It makes things more convinient.

I could care less about people wanting to get high. It's not my thing, but that's a choice each person needs to make for themselves.

Smoking is fucking stupid though. Bear in mind that the tobacco industry published studies for years saying that cigarettes had no ill effects and weren't addictive. Chemically, it's a given that smoking anything is extremely bad for you. That includes pot. Several of the studies you quoted admit that, oddly enough. Whether they agree it causes cancer or no, pretty much everyone worth listening to will say it's bad for you. It pumps carcinogens into your lungs. It elevates your risks of lung disease, respiratory infections, and so on.

As for intoxicants... I may drink a beer (singular) once a month, tops, and that's being extremely generous. Experiments in trying to get myself drunk have shown that it takes a hell of a lot more than that to even make me notice it. Ultimately, I decided it wasn't worth the bother. Aside from that... nothing. I don't smoke, do drugs of any kind, drink to the point of intoxication, and I'm not a Mennonite. I just don't see the appeal. For the sake of argument and experimentation, however, I've tried a reasonable selection of what the world has to offer. I just prefer my reality the way nature intended.

Anyway.

We're into a serious derail here, so let it lie. I'm done with this particular topic anyway.

Marijuana use has recently been under fire for being associated with urinary tract cancer. 88 percent of vietnam vets with this cancer smoked marijuana. 69 percent of vietnam vets without this cancer smoked marijuana. These cases took into account cigarette smoking in an attempt to nullify the confounder. Findings were A. vets smoke a heck of a lot of weed and B. Those who do seem to be at slightly higher risk for this cancer.

Coricidin's one of the most popular OTC teen drugs. Putting dm in a tablet and adding antihistamines to it made it all the more popular. There is an academic debate whether it is the dm that teens abuse coridicin for, or the antihistamine, and that debate has played out nicely in the thread. Keep in mind that these drugs are notorious for doing different things to different people, so people may abuse coricidin for either or both of the medication's effects. A small percentage of the population can't metabolize dm in the presence of the antihistamine in coricidin, making it very dangerous for a small percentage of people. Regarding its safety on the whole for the average person, poison control studies haven't shown that overdosing on coricidin have resulted in anthing charcoal and a 3 day hospitalization won't get you over. High bp, high heartrate, agitation, can't pee, anorgasmia and impotence, tremor...basic antihistamine side effects to a higher degree. There are case reports of psychotic breaks that mimic PCP intoxication, which are usually are fun, from a care provider standpoint, to hear about from the police when they inevitably bring you to the hospital.

The dm and antihistamine combo can ironically cause high blood pressure. Teens' hearts have often not been put through trial by fire, so a lot of them have undiagnosed problems that can't tolerate tachycardia and hypertension. It's approved for hypertensives because of an advertising gimmick. By "it's good for your BP" they mean "it doesn't have phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine in it." Nothing more. Even though poison control cases have shown that it can rev your heart up almost as badly, it is not associated with heartbeat irregularities and immediate death like sudafed. Not yet at least.

Teens will continue to abuse this drug because of its side effects. Unfortunately their continued abuse will put it in a spotlight, and that'll probably flush out a ton of reports of use gone bad. Because the population is a young one, it's going to get a lot of flak from lawmakers in the future. It's abused by a population who aren't proficient at making their own decisions. I would expect that in the future, it'll go behind the pharmacist counter if it stays OTC. If dm and cold medication abuse keeps up, and keeps young, the FDA might just say screw it and that'll be the end of OTC cold remedies. If not that, then certainly the tablet forms.

But for the time being, DM and antihistamine tablets are one of the safer teen drugs of abuse. These reports cite that there's no social stigma with this abuse, and that's why teens use it. I would disagree. I think it rather carries a lame stigma to it--sortof a user-wannabe with no access to big guns. One step up from a paint huffer is what I would think of a 2nd generation robo'er, even if it's a lot safer. It's cheap if not free, and it's decent at a high. Instant popularity.

they smoked that crazy vietnamese weed yo!(when you smoke it, you see charlie up in non-existant trees) lol

Ritalin has been on the abuse scene for like a decade or more, but I'm surprised it's not more popular. Its cognitive boost effect is pretty significant, even for normal people, and it can give you a little rush. Much better than cigs or nicotine patches. I suppose abusing for cognition isn't as cool as a trip buzz or high though...

I hope you keep taking it and eventually kill yourself due to kidney failure. 16 pills? You're a whimp. Wanna do it right? Take 16 boxes you wuss.

And I hope the kidney transplant waiting line is realllly long in your area so you die of waiting of that while begging to some higher being everyday haha. Loser.

This must be why my p.o. Said I shouldn't use cold medicine o.O. In more recent studies they're able to detect mushroom use now up to 1 week :/

I've never done the tussin thing, I do like shrooms though. Its been 2yrs since I've done them last but it my last trip was like the best vacation ever! This thread has been quiet the informative to me though.
