Reactions: RoM

Sorry for the delayed response.

If you notice, this study was done in the UK. People that smoke pot in the UK (all of the ones I have met anyways) mix there pot with tobacco. So what your giving me is a link to a study that says smoking pot and tobacco causes cancer.

It even mentions it in the link you posted. It also says in several places that results were inconclusive and varied heavily from study to study.

I could go on but RoM seems to have already said what needs to be said.

Pot as bad as cigs?

Does it matter?

Do you smoke pot all day long? While driving, while working, in the morning, before bed, after sex?

If you smoked 20 joints per day I could see the point, but you don't. And people that do that sort of thing.................

Arn't normal.

The cancer risk in the most part comes from the smoke, not from the cannabinoids. This is an artifact of the delivery system, not the drug (it comes from burning the plant material, not the cannabinoids).
You still smoke the pot though, don't you? You could use the same argument to say that it's not cigarettes that are causing lung cancer, it's the smoke from them. So cigarettes aren't bad for your lungs. Unlike most cigarettes, you usually don't smoke pot with a cotton filter, meaning the smoke is coming in a lot hotter (the reason that cigars are the leading cause of throat cancer), and most people that smoke pot hold the smoke in their lungs for much longer than the typical cigarette smoker does.

Pot is unhealthy, period. So are trans fatty acids, caffeine, and several other things that are common in today's society. A little on occasion will rarely kill you, but if you go overboard it will do damage to your body, and take years off your life. Quoting High Times to back up your case is like quoting Highlights for Kids, except I would believe Goofus and Gallant over High Times.

After studying laws concerning HR as part of my degree, I can say that it is perfectly legal today to discriminate on criteria that affect job performance. Provided a company lists certain physical requirements in a job description, they could legally refuse hiring obese individuals because they are "not of necessary physical health." My idea is nothing new - employers are already allowed to screen for illegal substances and terminate employment based on what they find.
They can screen for illegal substances and fire you based on it, but they can't fire you for being a smoker or drinker, which are legal. They can fire you for showing up drunk, or for smoking on their property if it's a smoke-free zone, but they can't fire you for what you do on your own time.

"it is perfectly legal today to discriminate on criteria that affect job performance." How exactly does getting high after work affect your job performance? If it really affects you, then you probably didn't make it through college to finish up that degree for that high paying job. If you can do as much or more than your peers while using drugs recreationally, then there is no basis for that argument.

If you make drugs legal, you also create a new group of lobbyists that are protecting the rights of the users. Some large corporation is going to be making money off the crack and pot and whatever if you legalize it, do you think that they're going to just sit there while a law gets passed allowing their meal tickets to be forced into minimum wage jobs, not making enough to buy the products? Potheads can vote too (assuming they can remember to and don't have a felony) and you won't find too many politicians that are willing to alienate that large of a portion of their voter base by voting in a law that discriminates against them for something they do legally.

I believe my original statement was you should consider limiting yourself to 3 a day tops. That's still not overly healthy for a variety of reasons, but assuming you don't light up more than once or twice a day, it probably won't hurt you much.

And as a fringe benefit it means you might spend less time being high and possibly annoying the fuck out of me, since there's nothing more irritating than trying to communicate with someone that's intoxicated.

No, they've done studies. Smoking pot is about 4-6x as bad as smoking cigarettes on a per-dose basis. Obviously, that means that you're not gonna get as much chance on the whole, since few people light up on an hourly basis, but if you find yourself smoking more than 3 times a day, you should consider scaling back.

True-ish. Studies show that a joint's tar phase contains many of the same carcinogens found in cigs, and that each joint has 4 times the tar content that a filtered cig does. That has been taken by the media to mean that each joint is roughly 4x as bad as a cigarette.

The idea that on paper, joints look just as bad if not worse than cigs is not disputable. Unequivocally, they're chemically worse. However, developing cancer has more to do with damage over time than anything. Pack-years is what causes cancer. We've tried to correlate joint-years to cancer. It's not gone well. All these studies--positive or negative results regardless--rely heavily on a potentially flawed source...potheads' memories.

If people want a positive study, there are positive studies just like their are deaths attributable to marijuana. The prodrug rhetoric is just as bad/outdated/manipulative as the antidrug rhetoric honestly.

Risk of lung cancer and past use of cannabis in Tunisia. J Thorac Oncol. 2006 Jul;1(6):577-9. Results showed that after controlling for confounders, including cigs, marijuana smokers are 4 times more likely to develop lung cancer than controls. Unfortunately no dose-response was observed, which is either alarming or fishy. Antidrug reps would say it's scary that it doesn't matter how much you smoke. I would guess fishy. We would expect that the more you smoke, the higher your risk. This was a smallish study, but statistically significant.

I see two larger studies that have shown no increased risk after controlling for everything they could, but all of these studies are low-level evidence papers. I don't see a single optimal study in the medline or pubmed search. All I see are surveys and case controls where people look back and recall their history instead of being followed forward and watched for cancer. Thus, joint research is at the same poor level of evidence that cig smoking was when cig smoking and cancer risk was debatable.

No one's going to drop money to study mj smokers over 20 years since relatively few people care, so the kind of data we have today is likely to be the best we'll ever get. Overall I would agree that in spite of every basic research paper on the tar phase of a joint (except the ones describing THC's antitumor properties) showing that joints are terrible for you, we just can't make it stick in the real world. Based on all the evidence thus far, you have to go with the null hypothesis. MJ smoking is not yet associated with lung and neck cancer.

Now, that being said, I see a heck of a lot of things on this search that MJ IS associated with that's not good. Again, bladder cancer risk is hot off the presses, and that one has been independently confirmed.

You didn't read a fucking thing i posted and still bothered to respond.

It's incredible.

Click (all) the links instead of just reading the replies or don't even bother.

Learn something for yourself. It's not like i provide multiple sources because google is amusing to me. Your post is, for the most part, exactly wtf i've been saying save the complete disregard for any of the actual content you're replying to.

What have i said? Smoke is bad. Cancer is bad. Almost everything gives you cancer or is bad for you in some way. Healthy people get sick too. Drugs are bad for you. Use them in moderation if you're going to. For the most part everyone's on something. You can find just as much credible information on both sides of the argument making the entirety of the subject moot and inconclusive based on the information that can be provided and the fact that no one in this conversation is unbiased.

These are the things contained in my posts. Go back and try to make it through at least one of them before insulting me by quoting what i had to say and thinking you had half a clue on grasping it.

And no, i don't always smoke it, alot of people don't. There are quite a few other methods of consuming the drug.

I'll cut this short, my brownies just went ding. ;)

I suppose I feel the need to explain my reasonings for wanting to try drugs since you don't understand.

I wanted to try drugs because I knew what I was tought in school was a lie. I wanted to know the truth. I wanted to find out for myself. I have tried a lot of drugs, but some I stay away from. I observe first, try later. If I don't like the way people behave on said drug, I don't try it. I've never done coke, crack, meth, Heroin, never huffed or snorted anything and I don't take pills of any kind for recreational use. I see the way people behave when they are under the influence and addicted and that is reason enough for me.

The drugs I like are shrooms, acid, and pot. I've been known to smoke opium from time to time, but it's hard to find and expensive so i don't make a habit of it. I have seen people do these drugs and still be normal productive members of society. I have done these drugs and I remain a somewhat normal and productive member of society. I do it for the same reason people play video games, it's fun. Some people don't think it's fun, so those people shouldn't do it, very much like any recreational activity.

People use recreational activites to "get away" quite often. Mushrooms, LSD, and THC are not chemically addictive. Like any recreational activity though, all 3 are best in moderation. When you use drugs just to ignore your problems is when drugs become an escape, and not recreation. In the end your problems are still there. But that's life.

that works for me

First off, cigarettes contains Tobacco, tobacco cantains nicotine, nicotine causes cancer, even if you don't smoke it.

You are right about one thing, I don't smoke pot with a cotton filter, I smoke it with a water filter, which cools the smoke down considerably. The majority of damage pot smoke does to your lungs is thermal (according to my doctor).

Pot is unhealthy, period. So are trans fatty acids, caffeine, and several other things that are common in today's society. A little on occasion will rarely kill you, but if you go overboard it will do damage to your body, and take years off your life.

Yeah, High Times is a joke. People give them lots of money every month for that magazine, and they do absolutley nothing to help the cause. If anything they hurt it, because anything they print, be it true or not, is cast aside as bullshit by anyone that can't bother to try and find out the truth.

If the air is so bad, RoM, why throw even more chemicals into your body when you can help it?

And even if outdoor air is the leading cause of respiratory problems, I guarantee you that smoking anything causes more cancer than pollution. Between the two, I'd rather have asthma.

Celv never wish asthma onto yourself. Asthma sucks so much donkey balls. There were nights where I would literally wake up coughing so hard I though my lungs would eventually just pop out. Not to forget all the emergency room trips because the inhalers weren't effective enough that I would to get a machine to pump constant steroid to settle my lungs. Inhaling all that fucking steroids sucks because having that mask on isn't exactly pleasant. Also the coughing can cause pain from coughing so much it causes your throat to go raw, or the strength and consistency (at least in my case) would start causing chest pains.

I would rather suck in the pollution knowing that I would probably die than go through all the nights where I couldn't sleep because of asthma attacks.

First of all, I have plenty of pot RoM, thank you.

Second of all
This shit probably wasn't even new when burnouts gave themselves the nickname "Robo" 18 years ago.

Recreational drugs and Wal-Mart, Walgreens, etc. don't belong in the same sentence.
I meant new for me, not new on the market.

Then you either took the wrong stuff or went to sleep before it kicked in.

Honestly though, I have a in depth and lengthy tale about the drug in question.

When I was 17 years old, I smoked pot for the first time ever. Up to that point I had been drunk 1 time (didn't care for it, still don't) and I had never smoked a cigarette. But I sure did like the buzz I got from smokin weed. It was mellow, it was relaxed, I seemed to think about things in a different way, and I realized all those horror stories I had heard about drugs weren't true. Matter of fact, if I had been told the truth about drugs, I might have stayed away from them.

Anyway. So about 3 months after I started smoking pot, I started making friends with the loser potheads at school, most which are now proffesionals with 4-6 year degrees making 2x as much money as the people who told us we were losers for smoking pot. Well, those guys, (Scott and Tommy) got me to try DXM. Tommys prefered method was Max Strength robo. Scott couldn't take it so he always ate corriceden. 8 Ounces of robo or 16 Cinimony sweet corriceden. Hell, I did both, I've chased the pills with the syrup before. I was ready to experiment and learn the truth about drugs.

The more you take, the stranger it feels. It's almost like watching yourself lag through besieged. You see something then totally ignore the world around you untill you process every detail of the "picture" you just saw. Eventually, if you take enough, things will start to look unreal, almost cartoon like. Every breath you take will feel like it is the cleanest air ever to reach your lungs. Every person you encounter will be the most interesting creature you ever saw. You may not understand what you are seeing, but it will be amazing.

Eventually, it will turn into straight up hallucinations. You may think you are swiming across a field, the birds may turn into fish, the grass will move like sea weed. You will lose all moter functions. Every part of your body will respond to touch as though it were the tip of your penis, not entirely unlike ecstacy. You will forget not only who you are, but what you are and sit there drooling on yourself untill you go to sleep.

That was the experience I had when I took 56 corriceden (840mg of DXM) it's roughly the equivlant of 9 4oz bottles of Robotussin. I'm not lying in any way. RoM and Zeromous can both back my up on the quantity.

It was fucking scary. I woke up the next day and everything on my body was swollen, I could hardly open my eyes. All I wanted to do was drink gallons upon gallons of water. I never ingested DXM again except for medicinal use.

You may wonder why this is a legal OTC medication. I know I did. I related the whole experience to my doctor. I then asked him why it was legal and if it could cause any problems. He said "Because it works." then proceeded to eplain in semi technical terms why it was bad for me. Corriceden HBP... HBP stand for high blood pressure, and in when used as directed, it is an acceptable for people that take medicine for High bloodpressure to use this for cold/cough relief blah blah blah (Idon't have high blood pressure and was never gonna take it again so I stopped listening).

Reguardless.

This drug is not Hippy approved.

heh, I've never been that fucked up in my life, on this or anything. Yeah, I'm glad you told your story cause after looking into myself I was gonna ask you where you got such a bad report on this stuff. I don't generally trust anything doctor's have to say about drugs for "personal" use because you know they have to say it's bad for you, doctor's also tell you not to smoke pot. And since you can't remember what he said I'm gonna guess he gave you the same line he gives everyone because I can't find a good reason not to do it, lightly. It only has one other active btw and it's 4mg of some antihistamine to every 30 of the dxm. None of the Robotusin the store had was over 15mg doses, so how much were you drinking? I'm sure you can pull some links out of somewhere to find something legitamtly bad with it right? Cause I can't find anything bad enough to make me stop doin it.
No I wouldn't personally advise doing it Trippy's way, but doing it the way I talked about I think is fine for me.

Couldn't have said it much better than that, except - I like pot and shrooms, but I stay away from acid, too many bad stories from friends who did blotter, don't know anyone who does drops though. That and I'll do the occassional pills, things like dxm or pain killers, but not much else. Never done opium, but I would if the opportunity arose, and I don't drink. I do drugs for the same reason hippy talked about, it's fun - I didn't need to play FFXI for as long and often as I did, but I did cause it was fun. Several days ago I layed in my driveway watching these huge fireworks trippin this shit with Dark Side of the Moon playing in the car, cliche maybe, but it was fuckin awesome.
So for those of you who can understand that, cool, and for those of you that can't, feel free to disagree.

I totally understand. Me and some buds of mine used to smoke pot out in the middle of nowhere, stargaze, and listen to Radiohead. Also very cliche, and also very awesome.

On the whole dxm thing...I've done it twice, with Delsym (which was a mistake because it contains dextromethorphan polistirex and not hydrobromide), and to this day I cannot even whiff that sweet medicine orange smell without feeling a little ill. I loved the effects; wandering around outside at night, feeling like I was walking through a painting, and discovering whole new constellations. Both times afterward I felt pretty bad. I couldn't eat or sleep for about twelve hours from starting, and could feel the effects for days. I have no desire to do it again.

Smoking pot will take years off your life, but only if you get caught. The worst side affect of marijuana is the police.
No, the worst side effect (affect is a verb, gogo grammar nazi) is that many people only smoke it to show off the fact that they smoke it, and do stupid stuff to prove that they're high. I'm a drinker, but I don't get retarded when I drink, and I don't drive or show off the fact that I'm drunk. Most of the casual pot smokers I've met turn into cliches because that's what they think someone is like when they are high, and they want others to know that they are high because being high is cool.

People acting stupid to prove they are high in an attempt to fit in is the worst side effect of pot, or any other drug. They are all poisons (pot, alcohol, tobacco, whatever) and will take some time off your life, but it's off the end of your life, when you're living in a nursing home and wearing diapers. One of my favorite quotes is "It's easy to die rich if you're willing to live miserably." Moderation never killed anyone, but addiction is the leading cause of death, followed closely by stupidity.

I know who you're talking about, I've met people like that. I don't smoke with people like that, they piss me off too much.
