I'm not sure how many people here played the first one but I know I'm looking forward to it.

Guild Wars 2 Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be a subscription fee for Guild Wars 2?
Nope. Like the original Guild Wars, there will be no subscription fee for Guild Wars 2. You just buy the game and play it online without paying a monthly fee.

Will Guild Wars 2 be an MMO?
Yes. Guild Wars 2 provides a massive, online persistent world.

How is Guild Wars 2 different from other MMOs?
While Guild Wars 2 adds a persistent world, it retains the unique nature of the original game including a strong narrative, extensive instanced gameplay, an anti-grind design philosophy, and strong support for competitive play.

Will Guild Wars 2 have non-human playable races?
Absolutely! In addition to humans, players will be able to create, customize, and play asura, charr, norn, and sylvari characters.

* The conquerors of Ascalon, the charr are ferocious, warmongering creatures—the intractable foes of humanity. Now, as greater dangers threaten their conquests, the charr legions marshal their war machines to meet their enemies with deadly force.

* The norn are half-giant brawlers from the frigid northern lands who can shapeshift into mighty bestial forms. They've been driven from their homeland by a force beyond reckon, and now regroup among the lost dwarven ruins of the Shiverpeaks.

* The asura, who once ruled the caves and tunnels below Tyria, are an advanced race of small stature and large intellect. Having emerged from the depths, the asura aim to rule the surface world with their powerful golems and razor-sharp wit.

* Not much is known of the sylvari, save that they are a race of sentient plant-beings, newly blossomed into the world. They are the youngest of the races, and are bound together by a common dream.

How will character progression work? Will you be raising the level cap?
Guild Wars 2 will have the kind of extensive character advancement appropriate to a persistent world RPG. It is our priority to avoid forcing players into the grind-based gameplay that too often accompanies a high level cap.

Also, to allow players the freedom to play together even if their friends are at a much higher (or lower) level, we are planning to implement a strong sidekicking system, similar to that used in City of Heroes.

We're applying this same philosophy to competitive play. Players will be able to engage in organized, balanced PvP (similar to GvG in the original Guild Wars) without needing to first level up characters, find equipment, or unlock skills. While inside the organized PvP area, all characters will be the same power level and will have access to the same equipment.

Will Guild Wars 2 be solo-able?
Yes. You will be able to advance your character to the maximum level without ever joining a group if you so desire. Most content will be designed in a solo-friendly way, though often with mechanisms for scaling up in difficulty when more players are involved. This will give players the option to experience the game whichever way they prefer.

At the same time, it is important for an MMO community to join together to overcome challenges. There will also be some areas in the game that require a coordinated group effort.

Can I play my original Guild Wars character in Guild Wars 2?
Because Guild Wars 2 is a whole new game with different professions and races, new technology, and expanded gameplay, it would not be possible to directly use an original Guild Wars character.

However, your original Guild Wars character names will be reserved for your use in Guild Wars 2. In addition, Guild Wars 2 recognizes the accomplishments commemorated by your original Guild Wars characters in the Hall of Monuments and provides you with unique rewards to showcase those achievements.

What are the system requirements for Guild Wars 2?
The system requirements haven't been finalized, but just as with the original Guild Wars series, we're committed to creating a beautiful game that will play great on mid-range gaming PCs.

When is Guild Wars 2 going to be released?
When it's finished. Seriously though, we haven't announced a specific release date yet, but when we do you can get those details and more right here on the official website.

When will there be a beta?
Although we publically alpha- and beta-tested the original Guild Wars while it was still in early development, with Guild Wars 2 we will commence beta testing closer to the game's release. With that in mind, we will not start beta testing in 2008 as we had originally planned. Guild Wars 2 is a very large and ambitious game, and Guild Wars players rightfully have very high expectations of its quality. We want players to be absolutely blown away by the game the first time they experience it.

The only real problems that I had with the first one was that it was short and that since it was free a lot of immature kids played it. The max level was 20 and it did have some missions that did take some effort to complete but wasn't too much time consuming to finish it. Guild Wars 2 is supposed to have a higher level cap. It's good for casual gamers who don't want to pay a monthly fee for a game that they might not get the chance to play alot. I used to play it when I needed a break from FFXI.

I should have replied to this sooner.

I was and still am a huge fan of Guild Wars. I'd started playing it right around release, before I began dating Stine, and we got each other into playing our own respective games (hers being FFXI, mine being GW). She fell out of Guild Wars before I did, and I lost slight interest only because I'd finished all the missions, had done the equivalent of capping the exp and merits on my character, and had retrieved 100% of his spell list (Tristam Green is an Elementalist).

When the new "campaigns", as they are called, were released, I found myself largely uninterested since the new jobs didn't appeal to me, and neither did the new areas.

However, I followed the designs of the new campaigns, and the expansion "Eye of the North" with renewed vigor simply because I loved the concepts and the artwork, most of which (at least to me) remains unparalleled in terms of an MMO.

Yet, Guild Wars 2 remains largely a mystery to me lol. Outside of the info that Stine has posted on it, I haven't seen much due to a lot of factors (mainly, my interest being shifted to FFXI, and also the fact that the GW site is blocked at my work).

As I've already told Stine, I'm a little disheartened that I cannot port Tristam Green the character over to Guild Wars 2 from Guild Wars, but upon further thought, I feel that's probably the best. What incentive would I have as a fully-leveled/skilled character beginning a new game? This was the quagmire I was in when I began the "Nightfall" campaign.

At the very least, I'm glad they have opted to bind the Character Names to the individual accounts, allowing me to reserve Tristam Green (the name) whenever I should so choose to begin playing :)

was (still am) a huge fan of GW. I dont play often anymore, but this just might pick me back up. Dervish was always my favorite, lol

I tried Dervish and really was looking forward to it, but it was never as strong as I expected, so I was let down lol.

yeah I was let down also... But I was still satisfied compared with the other jobs I had. It was the closest thing I could get to what I really wanted, lol.. I also started as an elementalist, but I wanted to cast magic AND melee, and ele/war wasnt really.... that great. I tried it, lol. (and war/ele)

I knew a couple W/Es that could beat stuff down and tank with a Chaos Axe, Conjure Wind, Whirlwind and w/e the other knockback/knockdown spell was.

I tried E/W once, hated it so badly lol. I ended up being pure casting for Fire Magic with E/Me -- I was one of the forerunners of an AoE build after they enhanced the AI for mobs to run away from Fire Storm lol.

God I miss those days. You tell people you use an Attunement/Knockdown AoE build and they look at you like you have three heads haha.

yeah, GW is one of the only games I know of where you can BE what you want, and still play efficiently. (if you can get used to your combination) I never really did get used to the ele/war... just didnt like it.

Also, its been a while since Ive logged in... Im wondering how many of those "birthday pets" I have, now, lol.

Oh shit, thanks for reminding me, I have one for this year now too XD.

Yeah, that was one thing that always made me feel good in GW. While there were cookie-cutter builds (lol55hp Farming Monk), those were normally nerfed a month after they became effective, thus forcing people to play in new and inventive ways.

I was RNG/MNK with a beastmaster build. It was great for PVE but not really PVP. I never did get the other expansions but they looked good. I was too busy playing FFXI then. XD

Stine was a Beast Mastery Ranger before it was cool, too :)

It's because everyone wanted to be awesome like me. ;) Seriously they added a lot of beastmaster related skills right before it became popular so I think that's why. I just liked to play a little different than the norm. I did have a build for straight up DD too.

I wonder how many birthday pets I have now. I always loved the holiday events for Guild Wars. My favorite was the Halloween one.

lol, my bday present this year was a raptor... I got a lich a few years ago, its my fave still, lol.

Guild wars brings back memories lol. I did so many things to mess up the games balance it was great. Back before any of the expansions were announced I messed up the Hall of Heroes pvp matches with a single Ranger build (Heroes Accent now). I was the guy who ruined pvp for a month or two and made the Spirit spam build which held halls for hours on end lol. Not too many people know but I have a few who can tell you they were there when we first tried it.

My guild was even contacted by email from the Devs during the Beta weekend event for Factions. My friend found a glitch in the game which they soon fixed. We were able to put up as many spirits of pain as we wanted an we had a skill that was able to one shot people. We have a video of it on our website but it was taken down when we all quit. I uploaded the video to Youtube later. I'll post it below.
