The update, released on Saturday, was supposed to help users whose copies of the game were refusing to acknowledge input from the Xplorer controller's whammy bar.
However forum threads quickly sprang up on Xbox.com and the official Guitar Hero website complaining that the patch was followed immediately by system freezes and, in some cases, the dreaded ring of death - the only answer to which is returning the console to Microsoft.

RedOctane initially declined to comment, but this afternoon a spokesperson told Eurogamer: "We're aware of the problem and we're looking into it."

The new patch put out to fix the whammy bar on some of the guitars has been known to be completley bricking xbox 360 systems with the red ring of death.
I heard about the people complaining it was locking up and eventually bricking their systems yesterday...while my wife was playing it no less and luckily i had not been prompted to download the patch yet and wont be playing it until this is fixed.

whats up with the busted patches latley, Marvel ultimate alliance but out a buggy patch that destroyed all game saves...
 
but i dont own GH2 for ps2 and never will, most people i know who got it dont own it either so ill be stickin with this till the GH3 comes out! and its fun so when its fixed it will be very worth it.
just a heads up for those who dont know and go to play it.
 
Ah OK I heard most people buying had PS2 version already. I hear there's gonna be a lot of overlap between GH2 and 3 so hopefully your guitars will work for Rock Band if you just get that instead of GH3.
 
Damnit! I'm hoping this is sorted soon, otherwise i'm gonna cancel my GHII order, get my money back and save it for the Download festival at Donnington Park later this year. I don't want to f*ck up my 360 before the Halo 3 beta.
 
Yeah, I have put off playing GH2 because of this. I would just wait for GH3, but the game is so much fun, and Harmonix isn't doing 3, so hopefully it won't get screwed up. I guess I'll just be waiting for a fix to this.
 
I don't have to get this update, right? We can just keep playing like nothing happened?

I swear if this thing messes up my box...
 
if you got the update and want to remove it from your box, i reccomend the secret maintenance code.
Go to your system tab, select memory, choose the hard drive, press Y and then enter this code
X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X,X and youll be asked if you wanna do maintenance on your drive. select yes and this will remove the update. This does not delete anything but cache and updates, not saves or anything else. This can be used to help your system run smoother, but remember it removes all updates from all games, youll have to update any game that needs it when you go to play it again.
 
Sorry for the derail, but what's the "red ring" thing about?
 
a red ring means your system is dead and theres a hardware failure, you can no longer use your xbox. its known as the red ring of death and was common for most of the original launch systems because they died fast due to some breaks in code when updates were released.
other burn out from over heating.
 
I got the ring once because my power cord wasnt plugged in enough to the serge protector, i though i was screwed but then plugged it in and have been good since :D Other than that ive never had a problem with my launch 360
 
i had a single red light once, i still dont know what it was. I left the system on all night and fell asleep, woke up to a red light and scared...reset it and it was fine. I think it was either a firmware error since im flashed or a hard drive error since thats what the code for that light means.

I've had mine for a year and no problems. Although there is no doubt about it the 360 is a piece of shit.

They got a years lead but at the same cost the PS2 paid - actually working.

Not to fanboy it up but that is one thing i love about ninty, i've only ever had one of their consoles break on me and that was a 13 yr old NES lol. Although i supposed given my 360 hasn't actually broken yet i shouldn't bitch so much. That said i generally take good care of my consoles, making sure they are well ventilated and such. Plus i'm far to lazy to update patches regularly so they are usually fixed by the time i get them XD
 
My original launch 360 died(RRoD) 6 months to the day after I got it on Launch. They sent me a new one, with an older manufactured date then my original, and I haven't had any problems with this one.
 
Damn Woolworths, I can't cancel my order until it's arrived, so I have a week to decide whether or not i want it, if i don't, full refund (£70), but now I'm thinking about keeping it, The Trooper is just a damn good track. I also warned my friend at school who got the patch about it.
 
In response to the Guitar Hero 3 thing, I didn't know there was one coming out so soon again :P doing research, seems Metallica is the most wanted band to be added (HELL YA!) yet they want songs that aren't as good as others. I mean, Master of Puppets is good (most wanted of Metallica) and so is one, but Enter Sandman? that's so boring compared to For Whom The Bell Tolls, Ride the Lightning, Orion, To Live Is To Die, Call of Ktulu, etc :P

and I got a laugh at this XD

Activision CEO Robert Kotick said that Guitar Hero "would be arriving on every significant new platform."

seems the CEO doesn't think Wii is a significant new platform? (since as far as I can find there's no Wii version coming out, though if Wii got a guitar remote the star power could be done by doing some crazy fun thing with the guitar :P that'd be fun). I dunno, that's just funny to me.

Ah, as I figured it'd be fun on Wii, but that statement from the CEO was before they announced Wii (just had PS3, PS2, and 360) and that made me laugh for many reasons (cause he was wrong to think that).
