CNN said:
HOUSTON, Texas (CNN) -- NASA evacuated a building at the Johnson Space Center in Houston after an employee with a gun was seen and a shot was fired, a NASA spokesman said Friday.

A SWAT team with the Houston Police has been dispatched to building 44 on the Johnson Space Center property, a source told CNN. Building 44 holds a laboratory.

The call for help came in to the Houston Police at 1:40 p.m. (2:40 p.m. ET) but it's unclear who made that call.

NASA spokesman James Hartfield said all of the employees that would have been in that building have been evacuated.

There is "extremely tight security" at Johnson Space Center, Hartfield said.

A NASA spokesperson told CNN that all employees have been told to go home for the day.

Space Center Intermediate School, less than a mile south of building 44, has been locked down, said Karen Permetti, spokeswoman for Clear Creek Independent School District.

She said the school lets out at 4 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) and parents have been asked not to come to the school to pick up their children.

The school has about 1,200 students, according to the school district.

Whats wrong with people? ._.

The US should really disarm it's citizens.

qft

US citizens dont need their guns. Not 75% of the guns they have, anyway. Imo, Rifles should be the only allowable guns to be kept by citizens, and only rifles that are either: muzzleloader (black powder), Bolt Action, Semi-auto, etc. No full auto's, and no rifles that use magazines or clips. Why do hunters need those? They dont.

Pistols are widely used as self defense weapons... But, any weapon that is available to you can be available to anyone breaking into your house. KISS (keep it simple, stupid.) Just up the security of your home, and buy a taser instead.

I actually don't at all agree with my statement, I was just posting it in response to Skaw.

So... *slowly backs away*

I agree with what you said. Whats the real point of having these weapons anyway? The more availability, the more trouble. I think someone is going to be more reluctant about going on a shooting rampage with a rifle than with a pistol or two. Have fun hiding that long ass thing in your jacket. (trench coats are banned where I live)

I think most people have them to show off anyway, or "to play with." That doesnt sound safe, lol.

I dont know if you have got this part yet but being in around the area this is what they are reporting now.

(4/20/07 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - A tense standoff took place for nearly four hours on the grounds of Johnson Space Center. Now the gunman is dead, and one hostage may have been killed as well. According to a source close to the investigation, the suspect shot one hostage then shot himself. The other hostage escaped. The situation began around 1:40pm. James Hartfield with NASA says their security got a report of a man with a handgun on the Johnson Space Center grounds at building 44, which is a communication/engineering building. Houston police and officers with a number of agencies have been called to the scene.

KTRK confirms from Houston Police the name of the suspect is 60-year-old William Phillips, Jr. He has barricaded himself inside the building. Just after 5pm, shots were reportedly fired inside the building.

Jacobs Engineering, which provides scientific consulting for businesses and government agencies, says its their understanding that the person in the building is one of their employees. They would not comment further.

A neighbor of Phillips, Kristey Russell said, "He always came to the block parties and seemed personable and talked to everybody. He's the original owner of his house, so he's lived there for about 12 years. I've never seen anyone there besides him. I don't think he has family that are around here. He's not one of the neighbors that I know very well. He always seemed very nice, he'd say hi and was very friendly. I'm very very shocked. I never would have thought. He does seem like a loner."

President Bush, who was on Air Force One, has been informed of the situation. The White House is in touch with NASA and Fran Townsend will keep officials apprised of what's going on.

Here is information from NASA's website:

JSC employees in the other office buildings have been told to shelter in place.
There has been no impact to mission control operations.
Police are in charge of securing the scene and any questions regarding their specific activity should be addressed by them.
Security at other NASA centers currently remains unchanged. Building 44 is a communications and engineering office building with two stories. The building primarily consists of office space and a few labs to support tracking of spacecraft, such as the International Space Station and the space shuttle when it's flying

Space Center Houston, a tourist/visitors center, remains open for business. All tours have been stopped, and all visitors are accounted for.

Space Center Intermediate school in the Clear Creek ISD had been locked down as a precaution. That lockdown has now been lifted. Parents can pick up children at the regular time - 4pm.

Evacuated employees and media members have been pushed back, in order to keep them out of the line of potential fire.

Stay with ABC13 Eyewitness News for the latest on this developing situation.

Just on CNN TV. 1 hostage has been killed and the guy killed himself.

The female hostage was released

It's not easy, but it's totally worth the hassle. Anytime someone wants to pick a fight with me I just whip it out - takes about 10-15 minutes but they eventually pick their jaw up off the ground and apologize profusely before kneeling before me as their masterfully-endowed god.

I really have no idea why people think this. In a Nanny State where guns are outlawed, if you're going to commit an illegal act, are the fact that guns are illegal going to stop you from obtaining one to aid you? It's just going to make commiting that illegal act easier, because you would be 99.99999% sure the person you're going to victimize isn't going to have a means of equal retaliation.

You cannot count on Police to save you, no matter how fast their response time is. Anything can happen in 5 minutes. Anything can happen in 5 seconds.

Let's not forget the sole reason this country exists. We escaped from a, now defunct, totalitarian government. It doesn't take a whole lot for an established, welcomed Democratic Republic to become one itself. Mr. Bush has proved that himself, causing this country to shift ever-so-slightly towards that direction. You just need a cause and charisma.

Sorry, I'd rather not give any politician, present or future, an unfeared decision to tell everyone to do his bidding, or die by militaristic force without defense. Remember, I do not own a gun. But knowing there are people that do is what keeps this country from becoming a rights-stripping tax hog again.

QFT.

Why do people blame guns for everything. The people using the guns kill people. Blaming guns for deaths is like blaming mistakes in writing on your pen/pencil/keyboard. (i can't remember what movie i saw that in, but it stuck with me well in a debate i had in my AP government class)

I know it wont stop it, but it will lower their chances of obtaining one. Public area's will no longer be able to sell them, and the buyer will have to search harder, longer, to find his gun. Sure, the attacker can find a different weapon, but guns are probably the easiest weapon to kill someone with, without knowledge that "you" did it.

I dont know, its just a personal view. With gun stores being as common as a wal-mart, its just annoying to me.

Edit: We arent blaming guns, just their availability. Almost anyone can purchase a gun legally, which is our problem.

The USA is the laughing stock of the world, these days. Our pride has greatly diminished because were so "free." We dont have enough real leaders, that can lead this country in the right direction. And it isnt the leaders only, the citizens have just as big a part, if not bigger, in this countrys deluded freedom. This country isnt quite what it used to be, or what it was meant to be.

Keep thinking that. No, seriously. It's the worst logic ever. It won't lower their chances of obtaining one, at all. If they want a gun to aid them in their acts, they're going to get one. It's almost easier to obtain a gun illegaly than it is to get one legally, you're just going to pay a lot more. It's also going to be faster to obtain(no waiting period,) and harder to trace back to you(no records.)

The problem isn't that anyone can purchase a gun legally, the problem is that very few people can defend themselves in public legally with them.

The problem is that our current leadership(or atleast, most of it was) is all for one agenda. And it's not a great one. Another problem is that how fast a large majority of people forget that our government works for us, not the otherway around. So they figure they can't do anything to change it. If we don't want someone to have their elected position anymore, we have constitutional power to change that instantly. No trials, no second guessing, not even interference from the government itself. We don't have "deluded freedom," we have too many people who are completely content with not exercising a single one.

You say we're a laughing stock, but if you walked up to virtually anyone in another country, and asked if they'd like to live here instead, they'd say they would.
