I've been contemplating, for a while, about buying another PS2 especially so I could get to play this new series of games. I rather enjoyed the first two games of the first series. I was wondering if any of you people have managed to play G.U. and/or Reminisce and if so, what was your thoughts. I'll probably buy all of this anyway while waiting for Persona 3 but I just want to hear some of your thoughts on some of the newer systems/styles-of-play integrated into the series.

Quite simply, if you liked the original series, you'll like G.U., because it's a 90% upgrade from the original. 95% if you never liked playing as a mage.

Combat's still repetitive, but not as bad as the first, since the various weapons have different button timings. And Rengeki helps break things up a bit (prettymuch TP moves). The desktop stuff is a major improvement, they added a lot more forums, so it actually starts to feel like a popular MMO, instead of a standard game with only one set of official forums. Oh, and they removed the freaking Data Drain grind, when you're short like 10 virus cores of the same type because you don't use Data Drain on a regular basis, and have to go data drain most of a zone to get what you're looking for. While you'll need virus cores eventually, it's not nearly as much of a pain to get them.

Only one glaring error with the series... If you kill everything the storyline presents you with, complete side-quests as they come along, etc, you'll never have to do any leveling on your own time (actually, you almost can't, or you'll trivialize the storyline content) until the final boss. But that could also be a very good thing, depending on what kind of games you like.

Wow, just bought the game. I must say the music is absolutely phenomenal... About to spend the outrageous 50 bucks and snag to OT. Thanks for the reply as it helped in makin' my mind up.

did either of you ever watch the .hack//ROOTS series before playing? i just finished watching it, and i have just opened volume one of .hack//GU :P

Haha yeah man, my friend sent me the ROOTS series. I finished it and sent him a nice fuck you to him after watching it. I went and bought the 2 games for he series that were already out. I enjoy the storey so far so I think its worth buing.

If you pre-ordered the first game it came with another disk, called the Terminal Disk Which gives you a very detailed background on the events in the original .hack games, and the time after the games ended. But you can always watch it on youtube.

One thing I hate with this game is they put level caps in it. On Vol. 1 you can only go to lv50 and vol. 2 to lv100. If I remember from the original games you can level up as much as you want in any volume, but your limited to the areas you can access.

I seem to recall there being level caps in the old one, just that you didn't end the volume nearly as close to it... but I could be wrong, been ages since I played. And I'm really thankful for the level caps, otherwise the storyline battles would be trivialized more than they are already. >_>

Pickin' up Volume Two tomorrow... This game is crazy good and I think the story is even better than the first series. The only thing I wished I could have reversed is I went and leveled up a bit with my key words pretty early on so everything I did story wise until after arena battles was so easy. Really diggin' the fighting system too. I'm not a fan of these new styled free-action systems but this game did it right. It was okay in the first series but now... just woah. The music keeps on gettin' better too. The whole cutscene when you fight Endrance/Macha just has the most amazing music. Endrance's player... Macha... didn't even think of seeing that comming, at all ;)

Fun game series. Too bad I never got the terminal disk. This made me sad. Working on the Abyss quest and Ryu Books for Vol. 2 atm. Farming dark/light spell items to take down TOS's barriers easier. Other than that, pretty much beat the game.

Anyone know the timeline to the .hack series? I want to get back into it again but am kind of lost.

I know its .hack//sign>>>.hackPS2series1>>>.hack(graphic novel/crappy anime)

I never beat the first 2 games but know just about everything else. Is root before GU?

Insert //ROOT as ".hack(graphic novel/crappy anime". I really hate anime as a whole but I will tell you //ROOT is far from crap. Instead of going through the trouble of finding torrents/DVD's and what not, you can go to YouTube (as suggested by someone earlier) and get the low down of what has been going on from game series one and //Sign up to the G.U. series. It's a bit long but well worth the watch. IT details every significant piece to the story with some other insignificant. It's a very good piece of information.

None of it's crappy. :P

.hack//AI Buster (Novels)
.hack//Sign
.hack PS2 games and the Liminality anime that comes packaged with it both run alongside each other, .hack//another story is a retelling of the games from Blackrose's perspective.
There's another episode of .hack//sign that takes place after the games, with the characters from both series...
.hack//Legend of the Twilight (okay, so this isn't that great. :/)
.hack//Roots
.hack//G.U.
I know I'm probably forgetting something, but that's the timeline of the major portions of the series. It all ties together quite nicely, so I'd honestly recommend against skipping any of it if possible.

Damn shame we didn't get the art/factbooks that they have in Japan, they had some nice stuff.

I hated the .hack orignal games for making me buy the same game over and over. I mean I loved the story, the games were fun to play. But I was paying over and over to continue the same thing, it was like paying to play a MMO, except it wasnt an MMO, even though it pretended to be an MMO..

ANyways, are all 3 GU games the same thing too? If so I'll be looking to borrow them >.>

The BlackRose retelling is Another Birth
Also, AI Buster 2 has a bunch of side stories flying around the timeline.
Other than that, your timeline is correct.

The legend of the twilight anime series is what i was calling crappy. I read the graphic novel first and watched a few episodes and just couldn't handle it.

Most only consider the manga canon. That, and it doesn't promote secret incest over a game with your sister.
