I would have to agree with Theorist here. Doom 3 is a great FPS, but you have to realize it's really not meant to be some awe inspiring game like STALKER or Half-Life 2.
It's essentially a remake of the original Doom, with much flashier graphics and this time around, a better attempt at a storyline. I love this game, it does exactly what it should; and that is freak me out.
The sounds, the darkness, the music, it all combines with an eerie perfection enough that even though I know something is going to happen when I walk into a certain room. I am still freaked out about it, but switch my gun out and start shooting.
I don't know if I'll ever be able to finish this game, personally I've had it since the release date and every time I play it I get freaked out by the environments, sometimes the sounds and music alone give me the chills. At its core, it is a run and gun FPS, but what the hell were you going to expect from a Doom game? They're all like that. There's no reason to change it, or else it wouldn't be Doom.
I think too many people thought this game was going to be something else. That's what lead to their dissapointment. This game, this series, has never been something like Half-Life, there's never been a 'great' story behind Doom; your a Space Marine, all hell breaks loose and you have to shoot your way out. That's the basic story behind Doom. Doom 3 actually has from what I can see so far, a pretty intrigal little story of whats been happenening to make 'all hell break loose'. The core of this story is in the PDA files. Great stuff there that really makes this game come alive and adds more to it than just "AHH!! OMG WTF IS THAT! *unload ammo on target*".
Really though, If you honestly think FarCry had better graphics (which it does have good graphics, im not saying it doesnt) than Doom 3, you really need to play or see both games. My roomate has FarCry, he also has Doom 3 as well. Both of us can see that Doom 3 has the better graphics.
The only thing I wish Doom 3 did have, that it doesn't (atleast not yet, and not without downloading a patch), is a co-op mode through the storymode. Something like that would be perfect for this game. Me and my two other roomates could all be playing it at the same time, able to stick together or seperate to explore or be tactical. After all, the main character is a Space Marine.
I'd also like to add, that I'm not one to generally get freaked out by things, much less have a game freak me out. I've watched many a 'scary' movie, and played quite a few good survival horror games, there are always scary moments. Never has a game consistantly freaked me out everytime I play it as Doom 3 has. It's come to the point that after about 10-15 minutes of playing Doom 3, I have to save and quit playing because it really freaks me out. This is the only ONLY game ever to do that to me. It gets and A+ in my book.
