Handling Misconduct (Jan. 22)

Once you've been permanently banned, there's no reason to lie about what your past has been (ex. minidragon admitting to botting on other accounts, yet saying his main was clean aside from salvage). I'm sure there are some liars out there, but I'm willing to trust quite a few of them about it being a first offense. I know if I was ever banned, I'd be upfront and not hide anything about it, and I know I'm not the only person who feels this way.

Just because you cheat, doesn't mean you're not willing to take responsibility. There are some people who've said something like "well I cheated, I got caught, sucks for me, I deserved it". Just because there are people saying it's SE fault for making a glitch in the first place (lol at that logic...), doesn't mean everyone who was banned are trying to justify their actions, or lie about their pasts.

Minidragon still isn't honest. He said he's not a virgin. He also claimed to be a normal person. Truely he was a robot, and robots do not have dicks.

Unless he used his CD-rom or USB socket as a vagina and got raped.

I just woke up, and expected names of banned on our sever, before going to work. /deceived. Maybe dupping was inexistant on our server after all.

Man u pulled the words right outta my mouth.

I just think for any of you who are bashing SE (glad to see a majority are not) you're out of sync on the situation. The amount of execration you people have for SE as a company perhaps is painfully obvious in everyone else's perspective however, an inane reason to deprave them of their integrity. Being the intelligent individuals you are I'm sure you can comprehend that everything was executed well within the scope of general policies.

My reason?

1. You break the law, You go on a killing spree : You break the ToS, You duplicate instanced drops.
2. Law enforcement apprehends you, and sentences you to life for a felony : SE investigations apprehends you and sentences your character to life for a violation.

You have no rationalism to patronize SE for their actions.

Everyone who has been banned no matter how popular or "skilled" at the game deserved it. I'm not even going to exclude the people who honestly didn't know about the duplication bug and were just caught in the middle of their alliance performing the law breaking occurrences. You had a choice to either; A: Report the bug to a GM using the Help Desk function that's conveniently provided for you in the game, or B: Keep it a secret knowing you would eventually exploit the function for your own benefit. Obviously 100% of you who were caught in that situation choose the latter, so you deserved a 72 day temp ban. Pchan is right, good players don't cheat and saying they're "good players" is nothing more than a misnomer. After reading the farewell letters posted all over the internet, it's obvious most of the "known good players" botted, took advantage of several duplicate gardening and instanced bugs and are simply now paying for their actions according to the Terms of Service you agreed to when you initially stepped foot into Vana'Diel.

1: You robbed the government for billions in monetary notes, become one of the most successful personnel, authorities catch you, you're done for. : You robbed FFXI servers of virtual goods, become one of the most distinguished players, investigators catch you, you're done for.

In the end, you're a law breaker, you're a crook, you're a cheater, you deserve no honor, and you deserve to be booted out of life and or the game and you have no reason to be happy, sad, bashful or thankful for what has happened. The one and only empathy you should have for yourself is shame. And no matter how forbearing or warmhearted you would like your farewell addresses to be considered from others, you know deep down inside all you feel is shame for yourself, your friends, your family and the time you wasted playing this game as a cheater.

I probably won't enjoy the game more than I already do, but I'll rest assured knowing over 500 disgraced individuals are gone after gloating about their perfidious actions making them who they seem they were and that even tho not all but there is and will be a higher percentage of honest players that surround me and the general honest population of players.

Plain and simple. I hope this wasn't too hard for you obstinate people to understand.

I don't know, I think the full-on banhammer was the right course.

They had people combing logs for a couple of months, going back more than a year. SE also says that exploiting glitches and the like can merit immediate and severe reaction.

Here's my two cents: The folks who heard about the glitch and went to try it, or maybe found it on accident (Though I don't know how you accidentally break alliance, change leaders then lot) got off with the warning. But a huge number of people banned permanently were hit with the LM-17, which required you to call SE to get the sentence from a live person.

I think SE took this personally. You know there had to be someone who was going on about how easy this way, or how they'd get away with it, or something stupid that would have pissed off a GM or developer somewhere.

First offense might only warrant a temp ban or warning but a lot of the people guilty got away with murder, so that's what SE charged them for. Murder = life/death penalty.

I can't say I feel bad for anyone who took advantage of it; Claiming it was SE's own fault for writing bad code that caused the patch is as stupid as saying it was okay to kill someone because hey, the knife went right through his skin. Their fault for not being tougher, right?

Edit: Mercury posted while I was writing and summed up my feelings about a million times better than I did here, even if he did use the words "perfidious" and "tho" in the same sentence. =p

Now we never gonna find out. so guys we got a official list of quetzo banneed??

Anyone remember what the inflation back in 2005 was about?

Lol I made tons of money off that (not the glitch/cheat, but from the inflation itself) In diabloII I made a ton of stuff during the big SoJ dupe day, despite me not actually duping myself. I find hyperinflation to be in my favor =P (I say in jest, I know such things are really bad in the long run, I just got lucky whenever it's happened before)

Anwyays years later, ffxi is still around, and diabloII is still around, both games were relativley hack free last time I checked (maphack seems big in diabloII still, but I'd rate maphack on the same level as windower's plugins)

Yet, even then them admiting it does not make the action less bad.
I agree that the action is bad regardless, my point isn't about weather it was bad or not (it was), it's about the punishment fitting the crime, and instant ban for a player who's been good for 4+years is just a lil too much. Me saying that some of them were "good" people isn't to absolve them of any guilt, just to point out they likely are not lying about having an otherwise clean record and this being a 1-strike permanent ban for some.

I am somewhat saddened that apparently nobody on Quetz has the testicular fortitude to admit they got banned over this.

Quetz didn't interact much with other server's linkshells who would know the trick afaik. The only ones I knew who'd be likely get such info either all quit or left the server, or... did in fact get caught it seems. Not to mention the only people who are rumored to be banned aren't exactly people who post on qcdn every day. Don't expect a huge list from this server (then again I've missed out on like a year's worth of server transfers since I quit)

So did I, heck 6/8 mil V-claws from ODS!!
And the Jeuno NM drops before they became r/ex.
I spammed that stuff back then, and made loads of cash.
However that particular gilduping event had a major impact on ffxi in total.
And to be honest, the gil made was spent just as fast as 300k is spent today.

Not saying this case is as severe as the gildupe did back then, but it is having an impact regardless.
The difference between now and then is that SE is backtracking the logs punishing the people that exploited the system.

True, and it will take more then this to destroy either game.

This is where our opinions differ, personally I do not really buy the "this was my first offense, why did I get banned?" story.
Regardless of who is saying it.

Also seeing the people that got banned on my old server were all people that had some kind of history that involved GMs and a temporary suspension regardless of how respectful they behaved.

it's easier to say that when it's not you being thrown under the bus isn't it?
i truly hope that if you ever run afoul of the law, let it be a minor traffic violation to something more serious, that you never, ever receive leniency and are punished to the full extent of the law.

Ah ODS, that's what started my gear collection HQ staves, mahatma slops, base money to fund clothcraft, etc... We did that from when those belts were a few hundred K until they were down to 10k lol. Walking around with mule fulls of those belts is awesome.

That's a fair opinion, not like there's a way to prove it one way or another. I do know if it was me in such a position and I had a temp ban no one knew about, I'd freely admit it after the fact that I was perm banned though lol.

I expect no less.

I would be in agreement that SE did the right thing even if I was on the receiving end of a banning. It's spelled out explicitly in the ToS, doesn't matter if SE took two years to fix it, they tell you not to abuse glitches in the game.
Someone else on BG said if it was so unfair that people were getting banned for this, why was it kept under wraps for so long? Some could make the arguement that "well we didn't want salvage noobs to know", but to keep such a tight lid on it for no particular reason? It's like doing a visualpresentation on pornography in elementary school then wondering why you were suspended.

Consider it this way: Imagine you're a shoplifter. You know shoplifting is wrong. You're fully aware that if you get caught doing it, you can be arrested and imprisoned.

But you don't get caught. For quite a long time, actually. So you continue doing it, hoarding your purloined treasures, and figuring that you'll somehow get away with it, and suffer no repercussions.

Only finally, the store gets wise to you. So they pull the video logs, and can now catalogue every instance of you shoplifting, and the police break down your door and find the plethora of merchandise you have helped yourself to over the years.

In all likelihood, they would throw the book at you.

The people who utilized this exploit deserved their bans. Frankly, I hope to see more of them get banned in the near future. I don't even play the damn game anymore, but strangely that doesn't lessen my joy at seeing cheaters get what's coming to them.

sure, so let's get rid of parole, pardons, and religious ideals about forgiveness. cause we all know that stuff never really happens.

If you see what's being released these days on account of 'good behaviour' I'm all for that.
But I'd rather not go into those discussions on this thread.

Since it isn't church, prison or QCDN, SE doesn't hand out "tempbans." They screwed up. Too bad, so sad. SE doesn't owe those cheaters anything and neither does anyone else. They paid their money and they got to play the game. They chose to put that in jeopardy. Moral of the story is... If you intend to play someone else's game, you'd better play by the rules or be ready to face the consequences.

As a result of the investigation, approximately 400 players were temporarily suspended based on the evidence gathered.
