Hands-on Review: First 10 Hours

Yeah I've been using a controller from the start, always had an easier time using it in ffxi too. Much faster targeting, and targeting the things you want instead of scrolling through. I end up spamming X a lot as pugilist to attack, not sure if its the same with other jobs. But it fills my chat with "You are unable to do that action." I realize I can wait and click twice to do each move but it's easy just to click a lot at this low level anyway. Is there a way to filter that? Cant even see how much exp I make off a kill half the time.

Like everyone has stated. I noticed some heavy response lag during the first patch of open but this most recent patch shows faster response time. I use a controller and kinda mirrored the control settings I had in FFXI.

I really like how easy it is to change a job class by changing my primary weapon(s), its like my Mog House walks with me. I really like how the Aethryte (s) acts like a home point crystal, restore, and a teleport crystal, though I wanna know how to get more anima so I can keep a good stock.

If anything I'm REALLY into the fishing system its more luck and prediction based and you really have to pay attention to the status message about reeling in your line so you can catch a fish successful and you get EXP and skill points :)

heh I wanted to change to Conjurer but couldn't find where I could buy a weapon to switch! So annoyed, I think I spent like 2 hrs running around talking to every NPC I could find

My only issues with the game is the UI. It is really quite horrible. They don't need 3 screens to sell a single item to an NPC, for example. Setting skills is bad too, I hate having to reset all skills every time I change class. I also absolutely loathe that you auto-fail a Leve (and lose the reward for your LEve if you're in a group) when the game crashes or you DC. The first day I played I lost 5 leves, the second time I played I lost 3 Leves.

The Surpluss thing annoys me a lot less than I was expecting it to do, but maybe because I've been switching back and forth between Armorer, Blacksmith, Miner, Pugilist, Gladiator and Goldsmith to craft my own gear and building a decent tank character.

To get around the skill resets use a macro. Make sure the first line of your macro equips your main hand weapon and then you can set the skills to the slots you want.

Check out these websites as a kind of macro guide.

Oh, another thing that annoys me. You have to be able to target a person to invite them, and you have to be able to target a person to promote them to a linkshell leader. But most retarded, you have to be able to target a person to kick them from the linkshell.

How stupid is that? If a member messes up, he can just avoid you to avoid getting kicked.

UI still needs work or speed.

However after yesterdays patch gameplay is much better, combat is smoother ans faster and actually playable.

Fishing is the shit, exp for fishing? WOOT

Oh...and they brought the dunes back, what kind of sick joke is that SE

The patches are up. The servers are still down but start the dl'd now.

The reason why the controls are so bad is because everything is being handled server side. Every time you move the mouse or touch a key(including the menu's which is retarded) it send the command to the server before it actually makes the change on your screen, hence the delay. The only reasons I can see for it is because it's a beta and they want to have access to as much info as possible; or much more likely, it's supposed to be a counter-measure against 3rd party programs like bots or windower macros. It's a horrible system, one that will hopefully be changed in the release, but if it's really meant to stop cheating, then it's not going anywhere.

This is actually not correct. It's been stated that the mouse lag is strictly due to being software driven. The developers have mentioned they are considering a hardware mouse option, but have no plans to implement it at this time. The mouse movement was also this way in FFXI, if I recall. As far as character movement is concerned, you move client side first, the server just checks and verifies your position. They've done a good job with the formula, too, in my opinion, given that I have yet to experience any rubber banding in the couple of hours I've had to try the beta out.

There are periods in which your receiving rate will be zero, and you'll notice you can still move around while you slowly disconnect from the game. If all movement was checked server side first, there would be some pretty serious issues. All character and character movement alone is checked server side, but originates after the command has been executed client-side. All camera angles and movements are client side. Any interaction with non-player characters sends a query to the server and receives a response, certainly, but your actual mouse movement is strictly client side.

Mine is stuck at 94.6%

If you download Utorrent, not only are these patches faster, it's really easy too. I'd be happy to explain what to do if you aren't sure.

But run the ffxiv downloader, then open utorrent and download the patch from:
My Documents -> My Games -> FFXIV Beta Version -> Downloads -> FFXIV Beta -> bca2a8ae (patches found here if it's a red screen - in metainfo)
-> d96453e6 (patches found here if it's a blue screen - in metainfo)

The place the file in the respective folders in "patches"

Good luck!

Mine's just stuck in general at "Initializing Network"

Nvm, a simple restart of the computer fixed that. So random.

Actually, Bajaratt is correct. SE even said themselves that the reason battle is slower, and menu is slower (including, but not limited to, crafting, buying/selling from NPC, equipping gear, setting abilities, allotting stat points) is first sent to a "screening" server, then the server, then back to you. The reason for this is that they want to monitor player actions during the beta. So yes, controls are slow because of this.

You are correct, however, that movement and mouse are both handled client-side. But that has really nothing to do with what Bajaratt was speaking about.

Sorry if this has already been mentioned, but at http://www.ffxiah.com/forum/topic/13698/ffxiv-mouse-lag-fix/ you can find a hack that changes the mouse to hardware mode, making a huge difference in mouse responsiveness. This is the same "Cliff" that worked on FF11 windower and FFXIAH.com, so it isn't some random virus. Of course, back everything up before you do anything like this, and don't cry if SE bans you for it.

Even if you don't go with his hack, the fact that it was so easy to make means that the final version is likely to include it. As someone else mentioned, forcing the software mouse during beta might have been done so that they can better track what was going on when a crash occurs.
