The Dutch Take Over
The minimal interest of the Spanish in the island had an effect, however. Eventually the Indians regained control of their home. But the Dutch took possession of Aruba and its neighbors in l636 and returned permanently in 1816. Through 300 years of changing economic fortunes and various immigrations, the ABC Islands (Aruba, Bonaire and Curaçao) were part of the Netherlands Antilles, whose governor reported directly to the queen.
Although the Dutch West India Company, busy with horse and cattle breeding, prohibited settlement at first, Europeans began to immigrate to Aruba in the late l700s. At this time, Oranjestad was founded and named after the reigning Royal House of Orange. During the l9th century, many Venezuelans arrived, adding a decided Spanish influence to the small country.
