I've read the Dragonlance and the Wheel of Time series as well as many others and I fought reading the Harry Potter's for a long time before I saw the first movie. I liked the movie, so I went and bought the books and discovered that the hype is correct, they're very interesting, well written, and fun. They may be more towards children, but really by the end they're sufficiently dark enough to catch the interest of an adult.

If they get Zod's stamp of approval they must be good! The woman has read more books than God. >.>

I hear shyrra doesn't read that much though.

Now excuse me while I fend off this 8-mana Administrative Assistant who appears to have wounded her Relic Computer by incorrectly tapping a swamp instead of a network share.

I laughed then blushed for laughing when I read this... such a dork lol.

Back to the OP, there are much worse influences kids see on a daily basis than these books. Do these books cause "magical thinking"? Unless your a child, these books aren't going to influence you. Besides, are they criticizing the book or their kids over-active imagination? Potter isn't a communist manifesto or an anarchist cookbook - they're no better or worse (read influential) than any other fictional piece of fantasy with the exception of how popular the series is.

On a side note, I for one haven't read nor plan on reading any of the Potter books - I'm too old for it and from what I've heard there's not enough violence for my taste anyways

You know, the comment regarding Harry Potter being just shady enough for Adults is absolutely correct. I think that is the best way they can really be described.

I've drawn Harry Potter Fanart....I'm a pretty big fan - and a huge nerd ;_;

• Unlike so many other children’s fads (think Goosebumps more than a decade ago), the Potter series has accomplished the above with high-level, complex, densely intellectual, wildly exciting literature with strong values.
I'm a big fan of the books and the third movie, and agree that it's a great kids series and Rowling is to be commended for her work, but Harry Potter and Goosebumps are "complex" and "densely intellectual"? If that's so, my definitions of those terms are way off.

I think the best part about the potter series is it doesn't underestimate kids. I find most children's series tend to dumb things down and make everything 'safe,' where as the potter series knows it's audience is young but intelligent.

I'll be honest, I've never attempted to read any other HP book than PoA. And that was purely because my gf at the time was obsessed and pretty much forced me to give it a chance (I refused on the first few based on their well known lack of complexity). I got a ways through it and realized that it was a waste of my time to finish it, since I wasn't enthralled by the story.

I personally don't care what the impact of the books has been, since nobody in my direct family has been impacted by them. The children in my family of age to enjoy them just don't. They're smart, just not huge reading fans yet and most of them aren't even old enough to read the books themselves. I grew up the same way, I loved reading Goosebumps because they were fun stories that didn't take forever to get through.

Now, I'm in college and thoroughly hate reading anything I've come across. I find it to be a large waste of time for me. For others, it's a well spent time. I think it's that I haven't quite found an author that grabs me like Tolkien did with the entire Middle Earth universe, or whoever wrote The Giver. My friends have tried to get me into all sorts of different authors but it all ends up with me saying they're good writers no doubt, but not something I could see spending a huge chunk of time on.

Take it as you will, I find most of my time to be well spent.

And Gene, I'm happy that you found a way for your daughter to get over her ADHD. I'm tired of seeing the Ritalin babies that America is riddled with. If your daughter really has the disorder and not just too much sugar (99% of diagnosed cases imo are bad diet and bad parenting, which I'm sure isn't the case with you and Apoc), it's wonderful you can get her to sit down and read.

I watch the movies, but that's all. Unless the materials I'm reading don't involve Balance sheets, statement of cash flows, or retained earnings...I'm not interested. =(

Haha when i said "What is wrong with it" I meant other than the geekiness of it :P

I was refering to the "ZOMG DEVIL WORSHIP!!!" aspects that were implied when it said HP books promot witchcraft.

What's that? My name in every game named for a main character? No, I hate HP. They're all rubbish. ;) ;)
