okay so heres the deal. i have a hard drive right now that is making a clicking but only when ffxi opens(after POL) soon after(5 secs) it freezes up. as iv read clicking is a sign of a dying HDD, but im also wondering if its a bad sector(or whatever they are called) because it only locks up at that one spot.

whats your thoughts on the situation or how can i further find out the cause of the problem.
there are mild power surges in the house from A/C or Washing machine etc i THINK i have a surge protector..its kinda old though. iv had a few hdd have this problem over the last few years and i know thats not normal..

so if it is a bad sector how do i go about finding this out..and how do i stop it from being used.
any help/advice would be great. i know ill probley have to replace the HDD thats like 6 months old.

if its a bad sector, i dont think you can isolate it. If the hard drive is failing its only a matter of time before its completley dead, so i reccomend backing up EVERYTHING. ive had two hard drives die this year, and its quite upsetting when you dont expect it and lose alot of important info.
I was in the process of scanning EVERY family photo my mom had and making a compilation slide show dvd as a present to the whole family. I had over 1000 pictures scanned and edited to be updated and cleaned up. I lost every picture and have not built the drive to start over again.
i also lost alot of my projects and stuff that i cant seem to find a copy of.
i still have the drive in hopes some day i can find a way to recover it, it was my fault, i had SATA and IDE power hooked into it and didnt know.
Then my media 60GB drive started acting up,
i found a program called SPINRITE.
you burn it to a cd and boot it up when booting up the PC, it scans your drives and can tell you if a drive is failing and gives you options of backing up without losing data.
i backed up all my stuff from that drive, and then removed the drive from my PC.
this year ive lost 320 GB of space because of this stuff. im down to 540GB :/
hope to be replacing my 250GB this income tax time if i have the extra money.

so look up spinrite 6.0 and give it a go, this will let you know if your about to lose your drive and take action before its too late.

thanks for the help..they appear to be charging for it..im not paying $90 for them to tell me my HDD is dying lol is there a free one thats safe?

god i hate computers..and too make it worse..my xbox burned out the other day so im waiting for my replacement..once they ship the box for me to send it in...

At this point, you should just start backing up ALL your important files and get ready to install a new HDD. Ideally, you should at least have your main internal drive w/ OS, a drive for files, and a backup drive for the files. But at the min, at least get that external drive going and back up all your stuff asap.

well lucky me iv had so many problems with HDDs most of my stuff is backed up on DVDS. music and all that good stuff..its a weird situation though because it only messes up when ffxi starts up. no other time
