NIAGARA FALLS — The "Slaughter Solution" on health care isn't the only thing that has come under attack in U.S. Rep. Louise M. Slaughter's world this week. Sometime early this morning, someone threw a brick through the front window of her Pine Avenue office.

The damage was discovered about 12:30 a.m., city police said.

The brick put a hole in the outer-most window at the office at 1910 Pine Ave., but did not damage a second interior window, police reported. A piece of broken brick believed to have caused the damage was found at the scene.

Damage was estimated at $350.

Slaughter, D-Fairport, is head of the House Rules Committee, which will structure the debate on health care reform votes set for this weekend.

Strangely enough its a window installer...

Now its not just healthcare and a complete takeover of student loans but its a jobs bill too.

And before i get pigeonholed on this one. I don't condone this vandalism and i think its a waste to do things like this but that doesn't mean i do not find it entertaining.

I hope they enjoyed their brick-throwing. Getting away with it is the only consolation they'll get when the bill passes.

Yea i think you missed the main reason it made me laugh in that it is the quite literal incantation of broken window theory.

oh great...this happened in my back yard...awesome

There were 219 votes pointing out what an impotent idiot the brick-thrower was. Thankfully, under the new health care rules, it'll probably be easier for him to be treated for impotence.

Not too worried... still has to re-make it through the Senate and the Republicans are ready with one metric shitton of amendments. This thing is going to get bogged down until November where it will then be political kryptonite.

So how similar will this be to Canada's health care if it passes?

So how similar will this be to Canada's health care if it passes?

Not similar at all.

It's mandated commercial Health Insurance, that if you can't afford you get a percentage of your income fined(but you don't get any health insurance in return for your fine.) It's literally the same solution to the out of control car insurance problem way back when - get it or you can't drive without being fined. Only now it's get it or you can't live without being fined.

So now those that barely get by will get by even less. Theres not a hint of UHC, comically(yet disappointedly) in spite of the chagrin of protesters for and against the bill who were there because of UHC. Proof our countrymen are factually retarded.

The bill that was passed in the house was the senate bill. I'm pretty sure all that's left is Obama's signature. There are some secondary amendments that still need to be passed, but I think the lionshare of what we care about was indeed passed today. That's what the news is making it sound like. I'm thinking this is Obama's first real victory as president - well this and halting torture. With any luck, he can use the momentum to get some other promises passed. There's a bill floating around congress pertaining to regulating overdraft charges that I wouldn't mind seeing passed.

Unless of course they qualify for subsidies to help them pay for it. I'm not sure how many people thought this meant universal health care -- other than conservatives who've been screaming themselves hoarse with "socialism" and "government takeover" -- considering the constant complaints from progressives that it's a big giveaway to the insurance industry.

Now we just need the Senate to strip out the more ignorant shit from the bill.

The whole bill needs to be scrapped and reworked. I'm sorry, but more government doesn't mean better healthcare, and if people really think that, they need to wake up. Nobody should be "required" to have health insurance, let alone be fined by not having it. The cost of this will be over 1/4 of we already have in deficit, higher taxes. You might not consider this a negative, but it's still the truth. The medical field is lacking in employees now, we're very short on doctors and nurses, and all this does is create a rush for doctors and nurses that won't be coming any time soon. We as a people will have far less choices in the insurance that fits US best, and this doesn't fix the illegal immigrants draining money from the healthcare system because they still access to emergency rooms.

What about people who don't agree with abortion? The people who don't believe in it might be helping fund it in some states against their will. State benefit requirements would be preempted by "nationwide plans" and multistate "compacts," which would be ruled by laws of the weakest states; weaker federal requirements would become the norm. Coverage of AIDS/HIV testing, reconstructive surgery, home health care services, and child delivery and mastectomy minimum hospital stays and more would likely be lost. (States must retain freedom to require stronger coverage for all types of policies.)

Just too many negatives, the bill needs to be rethought.

uhh the senate bill was passed last night. waiting on the obama now.......welcome to socialist america

did he already sign it?

I'm not a politician, so I'm free to say "So what?" My tax money has funded a lot of things I don't agree with and have moral objections to. The invasion, destruction and subsequent nation-building in Iraq comes to mind. Everyone's taxes pays for things they don't like. That's why I'd like to see the Hyde Amendment taken down.

There will be no scrapping and starting over. The bill is passed.

I know it passed. I know there will be no scrapping, but I still meant what I said, it needs to be scrapped, but you think the bill as it stands will be the bill we get? Hell no, it will get fixes or it'll be stalled forever. The ONLY reason it passed was because in the bill, it's states there will be fixes. Since I'm not a politican either, then I'll say "SO what?" I HAVE health insurance, now get your own damn health insurance and don't raise my taxes so I can pay for yours. Why should people who made better decisions in their life be penalized for people who couldn't manage theirs? Don't give me the "some people can't help it". That is a bullshit cop-out answer. My fiancee was born into poverty, and I mean the literal definition, yet she got a job, and is now in Nursing school with me. She didn't have shit to her name, and she'll be doing just fine. A perfect example of a human being born into nothing with a father who doesn't work, and mom nowhere to be found yet manages.

Funny how the majority of the people in America were against this, even a ton of liberals. Pretty bad, when your own party says "that fucking sucks". Oh for you people who will flame me because I think this health care bill is awful, and I don't just mean the healthcare, but eveything Emperor Obama has done since he's been here....he's setting a precedent. He's turning this country into a socialist society. And if you're wondering, I'm not liberal, nor am I an extreme conservative. Everything Obama is doing is completely unconstitutional. WE don't need to change our constitution. Like American or not, we're as big, powerful, and successful as we are because of that constitution, and pretty soon, everything we built will fall like domino's. It's funny, history is here for a lesson, yet we always fall into the trap of repeating it.

Also, coming from a Nurse, this is going to hurt hospitals, and you'll see an influx of doctors retire early, and those won't be replaced anytime soon. Emergency rooms will be Hell on Earth!

this isnt a slap in the face because someones slapped me in the face deal. people need to study the constitution, so much of what happens these days goes against it. if you follow the constitution then you will find the right answer....
pre 1936 the constitution forbid such acts(health care).. the constitution isn't for "your" interpretation..read what the founders thoughts, they were pretty damn smart

It's not so much Government dipping their hand in Healthcare as much as it is Government trying to fix the destruction that the greedy and unethical Health Insurance companies wrack on poor and middle class families.

and this doesn't fix the illegal immigrants draining money from the healthcare system because they still access to emergency rooms.

And it doesn't fix legal families still going bankrupt from unregulated medical and insurance costs, which in turn drain even more money from the healthcare system(and others,) which gets reimbursed by the government, which raises the deficit.

What about people who don't agree with abortion? The people who don't believe in it might be helping fund it in some states against their will.

Slippery Slope is slippery. What about people who don't agree with kids who have zero academic ambition being in public schools and having to help fund them being there?(edit: or those with zero children still having their taxes going towards public education.)

We already have the highest GDP expenditures on healthcare with no where near the results to justify it(we're not even top 10 on quality of health or life expectancy) all because of Insurance Companies. We may have the best doctors, but not enough people are able to utilize them.

America is, was, and will always be socialist. Education, Police, Firefighters, transportation, waste management, fuck, even commercial Auto, Health and Life Insurance are socialist programs. State taxes fund local programs, which you clearly enjoy. I mean, I'm sure you drive your bicycle/motorbike/car/truck on state funded roads, streets, and highways(And let's not forget about Fed. Funded Interstates!) Your house is still standing because of pre-emptive, Fire Marshall approved inspections to your electrical work, and your stuff is still in your Fire-Safe house because of the threat of the Police force upon burglars. You pay in to Insurance not to fund yourself, but everyone in the same program.(edit: Social Security works the same way. You are not depositing money in to a government sponsored bank account for you to utilize later in life. Your garnished wages for Social Security(And Medicare!) are paying for the Social Security(and Medicare!) that your grandparents and other retired seniors are utilizing today.)

If you weren't aware of this, you're pretty dumb tbh. "Government of the people, by the people, and for the people." What pinko commie comrade scum came up with that?

The worst part is, the reason nobody knew about what they were there for? Pundits, talking points, and an unwillingness to use their fucking brains. "Oooh I can't be bothered to read this bill, it's 2000 pages!" You might as well have said "Oooh, I can't be bothered to use this education I was given," you brainwashed troglodtyes.

Might as well just make a new post about it, but if you haven't watched this, you should. Yes, it's horribly slanted to the left. Yes, they never interview anyone for the "reform" bill. But it's just because of how apparent it would be that those on the other side are just as dimwitted as those shown here. Just replace"Fox News" with "CNN," and "Glenn Beck" with "Keith Olbermann" or whatever his leftist counterpart is.

If it doesn't make you face-palm and feel embarrassed to be in the same country as these fine folks, well then I want your badge and humanity on my desk before you leave tonight. People voting and protesting against their best interests are literally the lowest form of life. Especially if it's because someone told them to. It makes me wonder if everyone had their bellies rubbed and were given treats by their masters for their "duty."

Just because roads, schools and PUBLIC systems are gov't funded doesn't make them "socialist" programs. Yes just because something has public in it's title doesn't automatically give it a socialist definition. How else would roads and education get fixed? Taxes have been around since the first civilizations. The Government doesn't make money on it's own, so there has always been a fine line. Now you're getting to literal to what socialism really is. Socialism as I hope you all know is supposed to even the playing ground for every family. That has nothing to do with roads, public schools, etc, so you don't have to bring that up. Socialism in a nutshell is taking money from people who are successful to give to people who or not. It's as simple as that. It's not fair to the people who busted their ass off to make it in life. Socialism was created so society would not be unequal in status, which is impossible to do. Overall, America is NOT this yet. Yeah we still pay for medicare, and taxes help with food stamps, but not to the extent people think. Right now Private business are private and should remain that way.

So yeah, School, public roads, fire fighters benefit everyone, including the wealthy, middle class, lower class, and poverty. That has nothing to do with the definition of socialism. Tell me, how does the new healthcare benefit 70% of America? It doesn't. It only benefits the lower class who more times then not had a choice in life to have a better life then what they have. No offense to anyone on here, I'm no judging, just telling the truth.

Yet again, my gripe isn't really the healthcare bill itself. I think their should be some fix, just not this way. My gripe is what the heatlhcare bill will mean when the gov't decides to start playing with other things.

There is literally nothing that may prevent someone with the funds to do so to build themselves a private road that only they can drive on.

People are successful because of Society. They can either contribute back, or fucking die out for all I care. Poetic justice required them getting their Health Insurance rescinded for needing a costly operation. If I(or any other Joe Blow American) weren't buying your product or service, you'd have no money. Successful people are indebted to the rest of society, doesn't matter if they want to fess up to it or not. They wouldn't be successful without everyone else.

Socialism in a nutshell is setting up social programs for equal opportunities. It's not "redistribution of wealth," but "using wealth to redistribute chance." You can still be a socio-capitalist nation(Which, by definition, the USA is.) The only thing is that instead of the Rich get Richer and the Poor stay Poor, it's the Rich stay Rich and the Poor get opportunities to become richer. Living, as well as being something everyone should be entitled to, is one of those opportunities to make something of yourself.

UHC benefits the rich because they can use it. It's not a "poor person only" option. It's not UNIVERSAL then. Quality of care doesn't diminish, the only thing that changes is how the hospitals are paid. Rather than a commercial market with middlemen intent on denying payments because it causes them to lose profits, it becomes a government with a non-profit agenda. UHC benefits 70% of America because, well, it's likely that 70% of America are having issues affording things. And their own lives shouldn't be a part of that issue. Wealth isn't a clean-cut 33% of the nation is rich, 33% of the nation is middle class, and 33% of the nation is poor. It's probably a lot closer to 20% of the people are "poor" by definition of what constitutes a poverty line, 75% of the people are barely struggling to survive, but aren't considered "poor" by definition of what constitutes a poverty line(though, they're still poor) or are moderately successful but could still use help somewhere, and 5% of the people are "rich." You've gotta figure, the top 1% controls damn near 50% of the wealth of this country, so everything I just said is probably a generous division.

I'm off to work, will discuss more later.
