Just beat it last night. I know this game is a few years old… New to the PS3 scene, I’m trying to play catch up!

I needed a break from FF13. I currently hit chapter 11 and decided I needed a break from all the “excitement”. So I borrowed Heavenly Sword from my boyfriend’s brother and I have to say it was a delightful treat! For a game that came out back in 2007, it has some of the best cinematic I have seen in a game, particularly the facial expressions and mouth movement of the characters. The voice acting was probably the best I have heard in a game in a very long time and soundtrack both complimented the story and game play with a haunting beauty.

Combat was a little annoying to get used to… especially the enemies with the hats. The last boss was the biggest pain of a boss I have fought in a long time in a game. You can only really parry one enemy at a time which is really aggravating when you are fighting a whole lot of them at once. Switching between fighting styles to change up the hack and slash can keep things interesting. (Even though you will really only use one of them) The fixed camera angles can seem clunky at times and I found created several blind spots for game play. It made me wish that the dodge stick was for the camera adjustments instead. However, the camera angles in the final encounter with the Raven King, create a very epic atmosphere that I very much enjoyed.

Another thing I wasn’t too crazy about was the use of the SIXAXIS of the controller for the “Aftertouch” mechanic of the game. With this, you can slow down your projectiles to a bullet-time and by moving the controller itself, guide your weapon specifically to its target. It’s a cool concept the first few times but I feel like it was over used.

Oh yeah… does anyone find QTE (quick time events) annoying as hell? I can’t enjoy the eye candies because I am so focused on what button will appear at the bottom of the screen.

Over all, I really enjoyed Heavenly Sword. The game itself is only about 6 hours long so I would borrow/rent this one. It’s a treat for the eyes, ears and gaming experience (even if that experience can make it feel like your thumbs are bleeding).

I haven't played a few fun lookin' games because they're riddled with them. So I'm with you, me and QTE do not get along.
