Not to sound rude, but our country does have its own issues to deal with, and should come first before helping other countries.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances. -- 1st Amendment of Bill of Rights, U.S. Constituion.

Doesn't say anything about non-Americans having the right to petition our Government. Fix our Country first and stay out of the rest of the World's Business. kthx

Also: This should be in off-topic. Don't come on a forum for a friggin video game and drag World Politics all across the place.

This is more about debt forgiving. As in, America has given Africa billions and billions in aid and now they can't pay it back.

Also, the US gives more total financial aid than the entire EU. And they're more efficient (go back and look at the tsunami footage/coverage for that - the US had set up about a dozen hospitals while the UN was holding meetings and the French were having problems setting up a shower/latrine for their own troops.)

Also, THIS is a much better campaign.

jesus....got to be kidding me man :?

If you want to do something for Africa, petition the "free world" to erase their debt.

Why do they need to pay it back if it was a gift?

I agree, this is not a US-only initiative to be taken, the EU and the rest of the "Free World" should be considering this. There is no way this world is going to come close to being balanced if these egotistical views prevail.

Second that this should be Off-topic.

Sorry, loaned. Hence, debt. But I guess it was a gift since America's not going to get the money back anyway.

Yea blah blah blah this should be on the off topic but now it needs to go to the flame board.

When the hell did Africas money problem become bush's problem? If Arica need so much god d*** money ask your "beloved" Kofi Annan where the money from the "Oil for Food' program. Well since he has no clue where that money is tell Africa (the largest supplier of dimonds in the "FREE WORLD") to find other mean to pay.

I am so sick of paoples views being so distorted about world politics that we (bush and all the big bad american tax payers) have to fix there problems. Then when we try to help the "FREE WORLD" the "FREE WORLD" thinks were doing it for money. Quit god d*** whining...........NEXT.

How to help the poor?

Burn the IMF to the ground!

One of my favorite captions in a magazine, the Economist was talking about IMF and Argentina (as usual) and had a picture of people looking through trash. The caption read: "A thriving new industry in Argentina."

EDIT: Btw, Cubs is correct, all money given to nations by governments and NGO's like the IMF and World Bank are loans. The debt in most of these countries is only worsened by the status quo, dropping the debt is the only way people are going to see money back by growing industry in these nations and trade.

Why should we help places that have a 90% aids rate in certain areas? Why doesn't your country do something about it? Why is it ALWAYS our job to take care of the rest of the world's fuck ups. Guess what we have poverty as well. There are sections of out country that need out attention, and education system that is rotting from the inside out. There are far more important home issues that need to be dealt with.

And then we get bitched at when we defend out intrests. America do this America do that, America give me give me give me. People need to learn to help themselves, this attitude of "I want something for nothing" is bullshit. By just pissing away money on free handouts we do not adress the real problem that is prevelant in places like this. It is the age old proverb, feed a man a fish he is fed fr a day, teach a man to fish he is fed for a lifetime.

Let the UN deal with these world hunger problems, that is their job, God knows they are pretty much useless for all else... Bt wait aren't they a bunch of embezzeling, sex slave profiteering thieves?

MIKE JONES!

I half expected to come back to this thread to see myself being flamed for being such a hardass about this. It's good to see there are others that are willing to raise their voice against those that think Americans should do this and that for every other damn country in the world.

A blog I regularly read was liveblogging Live 8, and had 2 things to say:

Well, I’ve had the vapid Live 8 on for 15 minutes, and I can’t handle it anymore. To hear a bunch of preening MTV dickheads telling me how I should feel about African debt relief, not to mention a bunch of rock stars, 75% of whom will never be heard from in a few years, it’s just driving me crazy. (Think I’m joking about the 75%? Here’s a list of the performers and presenters who participated at Live Aid in 1985. See how many of them you’ve heard from recently.)

For the record, I don’t have any problem with African debt relief. But relieving the debt is only a fraction of the problem, and these clueless twats at this show are acting like debt relief is going to immediately change the world, and it isn’t. Think of Africa as someone who really, really can’t manage their money. If someone rings up $20,000 in credit card debt, is it going to solve the problem to just get the debt absolved? Of course not, because the problem wasn’t the availability of credit, it was the inability to stay out of trouble in the first place.

We in the west give out money to these nations that has fewer strings attached to it than most tampons. It’s time to change this practice. Let’s dangle debt relief over their heads and DEMAND that, in return for the relief, we expect democratic reforms, free market reforms, access to the entire continent by aid workers, those sort of things. We can help with debt relief, but not in the finger-snapping way that these ignorant MTV shitbags are claiming it will.

This reminds me of the Die Hippie Die! episode of South Park. Remember the hippies at the hippie music jam? “Wooooooo! We’re using the power of rock to change the world! Woooooooo!” Of course, none of them actually had any idea how to change the world, and none of them cared. This is what 99% of the people attending or viewing this event think, that Africa would be fucking Disneyland if it wasn’t for the greed of the poopyhead leaders playing golf at the G8 conference. It’s distilling a very serious issue down into a one-sentence concept.

I once said that liberals don’t believe in anything that won’t fit on a bumper sticker. This is the perfect example. “African Debt Relief NOW!” That’s a coherent policy for fighting poverty? It’s nothing but one small piece of an astonishingly large problem. If you want a better idea of what we’re facing, read this classic essay from Kim DuToit, a true African-American. This is like treating AIDS with a band-aid.

I’m not saying that debt relief is a bad idea. It’s a good idea, and overall I totally agree with it. But if we have a list of the ten most pressing problems facing Africa right now, debt relief is number 10, and we still have the other 9 to deal with. It would be like if you were in the middle of an earthquake, there was a tornado heading right towards your house, a huge flood was heading your way, a volcano had just erupted down the street, and some guy came up to you and told you that Congratulations! We’ve absolved you of your $200,000 credit card debt! I don’t know anyone who would turn down debt absolution, but how is that going to solve all the other problems or, in the grand scheme of things, improve your life?

It isn’t.

What else can the G8 do? Remove their astonishing levels of tariffs and subsidies for agricultural products. We have these here in the US to a degree most people don’t realize, but we’re pikers compared to Europe. Developing nations are, by definition, based on an agrarian economy. (Think of the US before the industrial revolution.) Until there is development of resources and of capital and infrastructure, the best way that a country can pull itself from poverty is to grow something and sell it to someone else. (This isn’t just for Africa, either. Most of the former Soviet Bloc states are based on largely agricultural economies, because while Western Europe was flourishing under varying levels of capitalism and technology, Eastern Europe had the benefit of Soviet technology. Which is to say, none.) So, if we want to help Africans, the best thing we can do is create a market for the stuff they can sell. Right now that consists of two things, agricultural products and African artwork. The African artwork market isn’t large enough to sustain a country, and they can’t sell their agricultural products here because of our protectionist tariffs. The best thing we could ever do for Africa would be to remove these tariffs, but there isn’t a chance in hell of the G8 ever doing this, because there is WAY too much money involved in protecting industries and jobs back home.

This whole event is such feel-good bullshit, and this was exemplified by an interview I saw a minute ago. They had some black female hip-hop performer (whose name I didn’t catch, and I didn’t recognize her) being interviewed by some MTV guy who probably graduated high school two years ago. He asked her if she had learned anything from the experience of performing here. “Yeeah, yeeah, yeeah. I learned about the G8 about a week ago, you know, when I got asked to take part in this.” I, as someone who takes a serious interest in global politics, am supposed to take advice from some ignoramus who had no idea what the G8 was until A WEEK AGO?

Give me a break. Hear that clicking sound? It was me turning off the TV. I can appreciate the need for debt relief without being preached to by a bunch of brainless morons who know absolutely nothing about this issue.

and

I just had another thought as to why this Live8 thing is pissing me off so badly. It’s because I am being preached to not only by people who don’t have any idea what they’re talking about, but it’s by people who have the means and ability to do far more than any other individual person and don’t make any kind of personal sacrifice for doing so. Let me elaborate.

Take someone like Madonna, for example. Madonna is a singer. She sings for a living. (And bares her vagina for anyone willing to pay a buck, but let’s stick with singing.) Her big contribution to the cause of world poverty? Spending one day out of her life doing what she does for a living. Let me put it to you this way. If someone came to you and said, “Hey, if you come in this Saturday and work one day for free, we could really do something about world poverty.” Who wouldn’t do something like that? I, as your average working stiff, can’t do much on my own, but I would gladly go to work one day of my off time if it meant something really beneficial could happen.

The distinction here, of course, is that Madonna isn’t a regular working stiff, she’s a multi-gagillionaire. She could very easily endow a charity with $20 million dollars to provide a poverty-stricken area of Africa with a hospital. With proper management of the endowment she could do some real good to some poor people. Now, look at people like Elton John, or Bono, the latter whose big contribution to world poverty was to fly around Africa with the treasury secretary a couple of years ago. Do you see my point? These pampered celebrity fucks are taking the moral high ground, expecting the G8 to excuse hundreds of billions of dollars in debt to these third world nations, yet the most they are willing to do on their own (where their money is concerned) is spend one day doing their job. And let’s not kid ourselves, either. They’re showing up in limousines with their full entourage, hanging out in the artists area with all of their song-and-dance ilk, telling each other what a wonderful thing they’re doing, then going home to their mansions, or taking their private jets back to America.

These hypocritical pricks have benefitted more from free market capitalism than anyone, yet they are more than happy to look at the working man with righteous indignation and tell us how we need to “give something back.” How much has Oprah given back to the continent her ancestors came from? She’s a billionaire, and could EASILY fund 20 hospitals in Africa. Where are they? Where is Oprah’s contribution to world poverty?

These people make me sick, simply because they expect everyone else to do something that they would never do themselves: sacrifice. It’s really easy to demand sacrifice when you’ve got more money than you could ever possibly spend. Their idea of sacrificing is spending an afternoon doing their job. What an inspiration.
