Hellstorms signature

Am I the only one who found it ironic that the person who started this thread about someone's lack of intelligence spelled the word "intelligent" wrong in the very first line of the entire thread?

Oh oh, don't forget the apostrophe in the title to make the signature truly belong to Hellstorm!

I'd pick at the poor grammar, and the irony that it's one of the things on the laundry list against Hellstorm.

However, it's not nearly as poor as Hellstorm's for me to make much of a gripe or use it as a base of comparison.

That and I really don't poke much at my Engrish here as much anymore, sooooo that bumps me many notches down the list of people who can really call others out on it.

Btw man-catstorm, did you get that Resentment Cape? :O

I thought for a moment about saying that it was a play at hellstorm, but it was really just that the spell check didn't remind me because of the un-

I must be slipping. At least it wasn't pointed out until after the ownage happened, or it would've detracted from it.

I don't really care about this thread- it was just bugging me so I wanted to point it out :P

Carry on.

On a technicality you don't need the apostrophe to show possession anymore.

Really? :O

Show this to me at once!

I need to get with the times!

It's what I've been taught since junior year English. I can't break the habit either because it was taught in first grade and on since the change. I want to blame the MLA for that one.

Then why the fuck for my ACT essays I was told to drop the apostrophe on possession, and am still being taught that who knows. Maybe OWL hasn't been updated, or teachers are just stupid.

News to me too, but I'm not changing. Guess I'll always get 1 point off on my papers now.

The language is being simplified over time. I read on the news only a few months ago that, I believe it was the OED, was getting rid of hyphens as much as it could, in the formation of compound words. How often do you see a semicolon these days? English used to use accents ages ago, and those were phased out. It wouldn't surprise me if apostrophes were going the way of the dodo too. I just haven't read an article about it myself yet. I think the internet will revolutionize (maybe for the worse) written language.

I still use semi-colons becuase I hate to use so many conjunctions, or periods. It's also awesome because I'll get extra points for using the semi-colon the proper way because it will astound the teacher that someone actually uses the darn thing.

Context, most likely. That's Pompidous underwear you've got there. How many Pompidous are there? Most of the time, the sentence itself should tell you whether the s is for a plural or for posession. I'm sure there'd be kinks to work out, as there are with any change. Think of it this way though: how many horribly written posts here do we decypher on a daily basis? The mind can make sense of even the most horribly written statement. In many cases, apostrophes aren't the only punctuation in short supply. I'm not a fan of the idea of removing even more punctuation from written language, but if it's going to be, I'll cope.
