Javir helped me with this before but then my power went out and it seems to have erased the settings.

Im on vista, what I want to do is have ventrillo run through my headset but be able to play music through my speakers. If anyone knows how to fix this help a taru sister out!

I've done this by having FFXI playing through my speakers, then while FFXI was running, change the audio settings(control panel > Sound) on my computer to look at my USB headset. That's the only way that I've found to get it to work, but then USB headsets have some special requirements on their own.

yeah Ive got a USB headset, guess I should have mentioned that

I had this issue before myself, I always had to make sure I had FFXI started BEFORE I ran ventrillo, otherwise ALL sound would come through my headset

Yeah USB audio stuff is really weird with Vista, have to make the manual change BEFORE the program is running or it won't work. I just created a shortcut to the sound window on my desktop that I can open up real fast if I need to change something. Although, for some weird reason, the sound from my USB headset will occasionally mess up and be extremely distorted; to the point where it's actually painful to listen too.

I have two TV's and 5.1 Speakers through my PC. If I want movie sound through my TV I'll set my audio output to my HDMI cables by going to my sound panel and Audio devices, then I'll open my Movie. This will make movie sound be transmitted through my HDMI. Then if I want music through my speakers, with the movie playing, I'll open my Audio devices plane again, and set my default as my speakers, then open my music program and this will cause that program to use the speakers by default.

For you I'd do the same but with your USB device instead. I'm not sure how to set programs to use which audio outputs so you'll have to do this every time however. Every window you open will be defaulted to the already selected device in your Audio panel.
