I have just spent over six hours installing and registering, and purchasing, and all of that fun stuff so i can play with you guys with my worldpass.
*but*
after i log into Playonline Viewer and head into the FFXI section, then when i hit PLAY, the viewer window fades to white, then shows the FF logo thingy. then the entire screen fades to black as if it was loading a new window, then it just clicks back to the POL viewer and gives me a "retrieving messages" and i want to cry, because it wont let me play

{Hmmm.}, check to see if you have any firewalls active. I know that when I have my Norton Security on, FFXI won't work.

Sounds like a video card issue as well. You might want to check if your drivers are compatible with FFXI, which sadly uses older drivers in order to work properly.

There is a thread somewhere that list compatible drivers for various videocard if you search the forums using the search function.

i would check and see about a video card this has happened to me when i first installed i spent 2 hours on the phone with SE and they told me i should probably more than likely get that so if that is what you need best thing to do is go to best buy and get geek squad to do it (unless you know how ) within 20 mins i was up and running and rdy to go havent had a problem since , until my firewall pops up so now i make it a habit to turn it of a.s.a.p.

thanks for all of the tips guys, i am going to try the firewall first, which *should* let it through, but i will have to go see, then i will check the video drivers, cause i remember something about NVidia in the handbook or something, and that is what i use, so hopefully i wont have to go to best buy.

thanks again,
hope this works

well, my firewall doesnt even have FFXI on there as a program yet, and POLviewer is allowed, so i tried out the drivers and stuf, and downloaded a differnt one from nvidia that i didnt have before, and that didnt work either.
I meet the reqs for most of it i think..

Windows 2000
Pentium 4 processor
2408 MHz--speed
directx 9.0
free memory 209 MB out of 511
70GB of harddrive space
NVidia Geforce4 MX 440---graphics card
64MB of VRAM

it seems to all fit.....but it still doesnt work

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS HAPPENED TO ME THE FIRST I PLAYED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got to Start >>> Programs >>> PlayOnline >>> Final Fantasy XI >>> Final Fantasy XI Config >>> Then click on Screen Size. Make sure your {Overlay Graphics Resolution is 800 x 600} and {Background Resolution is 512x 512.}

Nothing is wrong with your graphics card if the game was able to load to the first screen.

wah /cry
that didnt work =/
by "FF logo thingy" i meant it loads the white background that says "Final Fantasy XI online" *inside* the POL viewer window

i will mess around with different settings though to see if it works

apparently, a lot of people are having problems logging in, i am entering a chat with support, and it keeps saying that they are having logging in issues and to try again later, but it doesnt say if its for POL or FFXI

i will let you guys know when i do =)

Maybe SE is under another third party attack? Yesterday a lot of people in my various pts, myself included, were having connection issues.

well, i talked to Gary A. from the support, and he said to make sure that all like 1 billion ports were open (exaggeration, he gave me a list) and then i went and did so, and i am about to test it out again. /crossfingers&holdbreath

Okay, the second support guy i talked to kept asking me about different specs from my computer, and this and that and so on, then eventually he said that i should go download the recommended driver, which is older than the one i currently have.
I downloaded it, and installed it, but my computer is still using the newer one. Can anyone explain to me how to change which driver it uses? you will get an extra big THANKS!!!!!!!

Support guys are retarded. I should know... I am one.

First off, does POL run in windowed or full-screen?

it runs as a window

i just talked to techguy John again, and he said that i have to put my router into bridge mode or FFXI wont work at all.....

Anyone know how to do that? i'm looking around, but i'm not finding it. I have a d-link DI-514 router and a Westell Wirespeed DSL modem.

Turn FFXI Res all the way down, play it in FULL SCREEN.. if it doesnt work, your ram, graphics card or processor could be slow or grphx card > out of date drivers, another issue could be viruses, spyware,or corruption.. idk, there could be a billion probs.. but if you dont give specific details to whats wrong.. cant help ya.

If you are having probs playing it windowed (with azaril's windower), then go to the websights forum.. and post help.

Okay, here is exactly what happens.
I start up POLviewer.
I sign onto everything.
I select games, then FFXI.
I click "Play."
The POL window changes to the white-background FFXI logo.
The entire screen goes black, like it always does when switching full screen windows, opening new full screen windows, or alt-tabbing out of a full screen window.
Then it goes back to POLviewer window in front of my desktop, which says "Retrieving Messages."
It then loads up the FFXI POLviewer menu.
Thats it.
Nothing else, no other programs, nothing.

I just got the game for xmas and havent been able to even *see* the main menu of the game.

hmmm no error messages either like "unable to get full screen" or something?
You might want to go to config and disable the opening movie to see if that helps.

Oh yeah, also try using drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net/. I believe the package installer include all drivers from GeForce2 and up, so this might be a littler better then the available stock nvidia ones. When you install it, just install the drivers and set them to performance. Don't install any of the secondary apps.

only thing that comes to mind is, outdated graphics card, old drivers.. direct X not updated, or.. your router is blocking FFXI, but I doubt that.. because you got into POL

hmmmm, idk.. have you ever played any other 3d games on your pc before?
