Hi folks,

I need some help. I have a desktop that I'm trying to get hooked up to the internet. I figured it would be easy because this is not a wireless thing and I have the cable directly hooked up to the router. Now it says that I'm hooked up to the internet, but I cannot actually load a webpage or anything else (IMs, games, etc). I can connect to the router via Internet Explorer though. What am I doing wrong? ; ;

Edit - Using Windows XP

Sounds like you've got 2 devices fighting over the same IP address, a firewall that's blocking incoming data, or a lot of spyware.

Try making sure only the pc you want to get on the net is connected to the modem. If you can get a connection that way, continue to turn on and connect things 1 at a time till you lose your connection or one fails to connect. If that happens, just manually assign an IP address to your pc that the others aren't using. (this will require some networking knowledge).

If it still gets no connection, try disabling the firewall, windows or a 3rd party. (If you are using 2 at the same time, this will cause you problems now and headaches later, only use one lol). If you can get a connection that way, you need to tweak your firewall settings till you find one that works.

If neither of these works, most likely you have spyware blocking your incoming connections, in which case you should get yourself an anti-spyware program (you can pay for one or use Spybot, which is free, and has an excellent track record, and multiple updates per day).

That should keep you occupied for a few hours lol, I'll try and think if there's any other things that could possibly block connections, i'm just too tired and need to sleep on it.
