Now, normally I have no problem with helping others when it's in my power to do so- but lately, I've had to start drawing the line. (See my post about a friend mooching Rank 4 and you'll know why, heh). So, let me throw this out there-

Last night, a LS friend and myself were farming in Davoi. He needed to skillup GSword, and I wanted lizard Body and leg armor for when my BRD hits 17 (which will be very soon). We had a pretty fruitful night, he got his skill from 18 to nearly 60, we both got castle floorplans, and we each got a handful of lizard pieces and a Shaman garlic. He logs for the night, and I'm about to do the same, when a WAR comes running by with a Sarjeant he'd called for help on. I give him a hand, he sends me a tell saying "Thanks- this quest is a lot harder than I thought!" Naturally, I ask what quest, and find he's going for Paladin. Figuring what the hell, I offer to take him to the well real quick- but give him a warning that it's only a one-way trip, because I'm warping out. He's cool with that, had enough xp to ghetto warp. I escort him out, takes maybe 5 minutes, and he's estatic. PLD was his first advanced job, and he'd planned on doing it himself, but he was ill-prepared. Mind you, he didn't ask for help, I freely offered it because I had the time.

So, jump to today. I return to Davoi, because I want to get the 2nd garlic I need, and see if I can get that lizard armor again (only boots, gloves, and helmet had dropped before). Soon as I zone over, a lvl 30 WAR seeking party examines me. 30 seconds later, he does it again. Then AGAIN. Finally, he /says [Help me out!][Paladin][Quest]. Great, I'm thinking, another one. He sends me a tell, saying the same thing. As I'm formulating my response, he feels the need to /follow and /poke me. Well, seeing how I just wanted to farm, I really wasn't up for babysitting this guy on his quest- but that just pissed me off. I told him I was busy. He continues to /follow. At this point, I'm highly irritated. I've got this goofy Galka attached to my ass, and others are there farming out the guys I was there to hunt. I decide things will be better served by my getting out of Dodge, and just log off, with this Galka still looking down on me the whole time.

So the difference between the two- WAR #1 was intending to do things himself, he just didn't know how to go about it (the only guide he had to the quest was Brady, poor bastard). WAR #2 had no intention of doing anything himself, his plan was obviously to show up at the zone and pester people until he got the help he was seeking. He even told me "It'll just take 5 minutes!" so he obviously knew how to do it- he was just lazy and cheap. Grr. I just don't understand that mentality- I've never pestered a total stranger for anything, especially when it was something I could do myself with just a small investment of time and/or gil.

So hopefully, when I log back into Davoi in an hour or two, he'll be gone, though it would bean he's suckered someone else into giving him a free ride. *sighs*

If someone keeps buggin ya in Davoi for help for the PLD quest, tell him to buy a stack of Prism Powder and Silent Oil. If he/she says no and still follows you, take him to a point where he will get an aggro that will kill him and warp outta there.

Ok, the warrior #2 is a stalker.

When I'm farming, it's my choice whether or not I want to interrupt it to help people. I've helped almost 10 people get their keys while I'm farming. Usually it goes along the lines of

"Ok, I'll help. But I get all the other drops, and you get the key? is that cool?"

This way I'm not totally wasting my time waiting for the drops (and they still get th gil drops) However, out of all the people I've helped, I think I got 2 silver beastcoins and 3 yag necklaces. I don't get as much treasure when I'm helping..lol :?

I don't like people who insist on begging me and getting me to help and not realizing I just helped two other people get thier keys.... I don't mind paying my dues helping other people out but if I'm busy, (and if other people are busy) I think people should respect that.

Now as for your Galka admirer. It sounded he was really nice enough. But if he turned out to be a prick, I would have wandered into some area where he would have been aggroed and warn him I'm entering an area wher eyou may die. I'm pretty sure he'd stop (or end up dying)

I help people all the time. I ran from LTP today farming (without a full INV, mind you;), over to the Raungemont Pass (spelling?) to help a guy get Ice for his summoner quest, not even in my linkshell. No reward or anything. I remember offering help with anything if he'd ever needed it WAY back in the day and he called on it so I helped. I love helping people and seeing people happy!

That said... I can't stand those who demand my help.

Maybe it's a strange personality flaw, but if I'm going to help you, it's going to be on my terms and by my own will! I can't when people ask me to help them get an item for them or something along those lines, and when I turn them down because they're complete strangers and didnt' come off very friendly ("Hey kill us some ghouls 4 skull"), they try to make me pity them, then offer me gil, then load me up with more pity. I'm no better than anybody else on this damn game, my ass shouldn't be kissed if you want an item. I just like polite and appreciative people who don't make me feel like a higher level whore by offering me gil once I turn down their request for help.

Hell, last week I got 6 skulls for people in Gusgen. I didn't even know the people! The exchanges went like this with me standing JUST outside of Gusgen (I was there leveling up my hand to hand on my THF):

/sea
*picks random person without a subjob*
/t <random person> Hello! How would you like a Magicked Skull for your subjob quest? ^^
>> yayaya
<< Okay, come to Gusgen, etc etc...

I gave up all the bone chip drops (about a stack each time) to them and offered a little bit of money advice if they asked for it, and I befriended 3 of them because they were such nice people and look forward to partying with them somewhere along the lines of my experience on this game!

#2 didn't sound that bad... Palum had a good suggestion, I think.

To sum up my post: I don't help rude people who think offering me money will change my mind whether I want to help them or not! I only have so much time in this game, and if I do something, it's going to be I want to do it. I'm sure those players need the gil more than I do anyway :P

Yah, I had a weird experience like that recently. I had just gotten my mentor status, and some guy out of the blue asks me to come activate the quest for the teleport holla scroll. The one that's way the heck out in gusgen. I figured the guy had some problems getting the quest to work or something. he first asked me what my fame was and I went to see if I could get it to work. Turns out the guy just wanted me to take him there and I think he actually wanted me to get the scroll for him. The really weird part is, he never even asked me if I was busy or if I actually wanted to do the quest with him. he just came out of the blue and expected me to do it for him without even asking... I don't get it??[/b]

Next time someone does a follow on you without your permission, do what I do. Face the direction of an area with mobs that will most likely kill the stalker... and change your equipment   . It's not your fault they ran to their death.

WAR #2 was just plain rude. If I were you I would have just logged out for about 5 minutes and come back. He'd be burnt, or dead by then (Homestar reference). Or he'd be gone.

When I had my mentor status on once, I was heading to Windurst to get the letter for my Ballista license, and someone asks me what a mentor is. I tell him, and then he asks me if I'll help him get his subjob items in Buburimu Peninsula. I figured "Why not?". I helped him get the spit and the tail, and I told him that he'd have to get the cape with a party since I wasn't strong enough to take on a Bogy without downtime afterward. Then he asked me if he could have a pearl to my linkshell. By then I'm on the boat to Selbina, and he continues to ask for one. He even said that he was taking the boat to Selbina to get it from me. Then I get to Selbina, and I told him I didn't have much time to play, and that I had to go to Bastok to finish my license quest. All of a sudden he's going to Bastok too. I didn't mind helping him, and I wouldn't have minded giving him a pearl if it was while I was around. I didn't want to wait for him and I didn't want to go back. /sigh

helping hand

I admit it. I did a shout for help before. I did it once to get Kazham key in Ghelsba, and a nice person did help me out (then went on and helped me with Palborough Mines, too). It's not preferable way to go, but I hope it is less intrusive than blind /tell.

Ah, but here's the difference Oni- you're shouting for help (only once, or once every 5-10 minutes I'd hope) which gives people the option of whether they want to interact with you. You're not singling out some level 45 THF standing around the AH, sending him tells saying "Get me my key" "aww COMEON, you've got time to help, it'll only take a few!" and then /poking and /following him around to try and convine him to give in and help. Honestly, what sort of mentality makes these guys think "Hey, if I make myself out to be a pain in the ass, then they'll give in and help me!"

I can't stand people that think I am here to server them. -_- I run through K tunnel quite often (been trying to get the rare/ex sword, no luck ; ;). Normally I get 2 tells a day for Ninja help. On occasion, 4+, and 2 days ago I got 2 tells asking me to kill both SAM NMs...while I was in K tunnel  . I usually end up saying I'm busy, or telling people a price, since it takes from my NM time or so. Most don't go any further.

Met a 43?~ drg who wanted to do NIN. He asked me to show him to the ??? while I was camping the NM. Fine, I'd just killed placeholder, and had time to kill. I take him to the spot. I clear a Bogy and start on leeches, so he doesn't get raped by 7 leeches :? Take 2 swings at a leech, and he pops the damn ??? He's getting pounded. He starts ordering me to heal him, as sam/thf  . I attack one, steal from another, and try to attack the 3rd. He has 2 hp before I get aggro off of him. I kill leeches, he gets his coral, and we go. I take him to main hall thingy of the tunnel, point and tell him to follow that way.

Now I don't have a problem with people asking me to do NIN, but to tell someone to take you there, then basically make them fight the NMs is pretty rude.

Day earlier, I'm in mog house killing time in Bastok. Someone asks me to help with NIN, but doesn't do it in the 'I need NIN, help me?' or 'help me get nin!'. Asked kindly if I could. So I switch to sam/brd for Horde Lullaby and kill the NMs.

I don't really mind helping if you are nice to me, but being rude wont get you anywhere with me =/.

**probably doesn't make a ton of sense, but oh well :P**
*and while I write, another NIN help tell, yay :? *

I know how Davoi goes. Seems there is a line of lower lvl ppl constantly standing by the entrance. One time I took my Whm out there to help a friend do mission 3-1. Once ppl saw I had Invis, I was suddenly everyones best friend. I ended up there for over an hour escorting people one at a time through various missions (2-2, 3-1, Pld, 4-3). Everyone was super pleasant and I turned down many tip offers. I just had one guy that DEMANDED stuff. SNEAK NOW, STOP NOW. Then we get to the Pld well, I ask him if sneak is still up, he ignores me saying that he knows what he's doing, there arent any more pugils. He proptly aggroes the NM ooze by the well. I said <<congradulations>>, <<Disband party>>. He died of course and sent me many a tell cussing me out.
The best was when I led four people through the ENTIRE 4-3 mission using my 27 Whm. We had talked during the mission, and they knew that I still needed my RSE coat. Well, they ended up stopping by the AH in jeuno and BUYING it for me as a thanks for helping.
