I'm sorry but you have to take a step back and consider all of this logically. You jump from being a fan of Unreal Tournament in the earlier iterations to disliking the game, stating it's just like the earlier games that you already liked. All the same, your favorite shooter is Halo 3. If we're going to talk about iterations and improvement? Halo 3 is a copy of Halo 2... with worse maps and unimpressive graphics. I enjoy Halo 3... for the campaign that's pretty damn badass, but the multiplayer is very last generation. I play it and I feel like I'm playing Timesplitters on the PS2.
Unreal tournament 3, if nothing else, is a fucking technical masterpiece. Before we even get into the gameplay of it, it blows everything else on consoles away technically. I might say that playing UT3 on PS3 is better than playing most shooters on a very high end PC, because it's so stable at incredible speeds with great graphics, a PC is going to chug randomly sometimes for no reason. UT3 is smooth as fucking butter. Besides that, there is innovation, from the hoverboard, to the crazy vehicles to the fact that they gave a god-honest, high end PC port of Unreal Tournament that's never left the PC with that quality.
Top it off with mods and dedicated servers and it's all gravy.
Now beyond that, when you go into the gameplay aspect, you can say you prefer Halo, and I can say I prefer Unreal Tournament, and nobody is right or wrong. If everyone in the world said Unreal tournament is better or Halo is better, it wouldn't matter, it's all opinion. But what is true is that Halo is more generic. It is, "easy to learn, difficult to master," in that anyone can go out and play Halo but you can get a lot of time mastering it. Unreal Tournament is unique. It's not mainstream and it never tried to be. It's frantic, it's wild, it's insane. You don't plan out shit with your team, you don't have time. You fucking go out and shoot. You struggle to survive while the game keeps going on and on like a damn jackhammer, missiles and green balls flying at you, people from all directions shooting.
It's a different kind of tactical. You have to think on your feet and adapt to situations that can't be anticipated. It's a completely different mentality. The difference is that if I want to play a more tactical, slower paced game, Call of Duty beats Halo 3 in every freaking way. Call of Duty bends over Halo and makes it it's woman. Unreal tournament on the other hand is out on its own doing its own thing. It's like the the Wii. PS3 and 360 are direct competition, and the Wii is out there being completely different.
