I am thinking about purchasing FFXI for the XBOX 360. Can anyone tell me how the game play is on the 360? Better, worse, or same as on the PC? I have not played FFXI yet, a few friends of mine played it when it first came out but I never got into it. Now, after many years of WoW I am looking for a change. My wife and I play together so should we go the PC route or can multiple players play on the XBOX at the same time?

Also, where can I go to look up job specifics, like what each job does and their role in a party?

Thanks for the help ^_^.

and It plays better on 360 than PC in my experience with it.

Depends on your PC. If it's fairly new, you may get better performance from it than the 360. As for multiplayer, no single system is designed to allow more than one character to play at a time.

PC users have an advantage, however. There are certain third-party programs which provide additional functionality that can't be obtained on the 360. These are not allowed per the Terms of Service, so those who use them do so at their own risk.

(in before the thread devolves into mud-slinging about third-party programs.)

Playing on the 360 requires getting a USB keyboard. Well, it's not absolutely required, but it's either the keyboard or using the built-in software keyboard with your controller. I haven't played much with movement on the keyboard, but it is both nice and annoying to move my character and navigate menus with my controller, then have to sit it down right quick to type on the keybaord. If your computer hardware isn't recent (say, last 2-3 years with more price-conscious hardware), a 360 will probably run it better, and you can either play it on a TV or a monitor (given you have the required cable).

That said, if you can run WoW without much problem, you should be fine with FFXI on PC, and if you're wanting to play with your wife at the same time, you'll need to have at least one PC copy and a copy for the 360 or for the other PC. There is no splitscreen for this game. There's not enough room for splitscreens.

I have no experience with 360 but I love ffxi on PC for the same reasons Nyosan mentioned above. Also, SE released their official windower, so if you don't want to use third party programs, you can use that and still browse the web during game play. It makes for easy mission/quest/guide look ups on the various ffxi related websites and forums.

I play on both systems at home. 360 definitely has its positives due to less lag than my laptop. The only lag I get from my 360 is usually when my friend list thingee is loading. The only downside I get from 360 is that you have to have a separate XBOX Live account for every POL ID you have. That means if you and your wife plan to both use the 360, you'll have to buy two subscriptions per year. I can't speak on 3rd party programs because I've never used any. I already had a USB keyboard from another computer, so that wasn't an issue for me. Controls w/ a controller a much better than on a keyboard.

If I had to decide between my xbox and computer, I would definitely pick my computer for FF. You have your browsers ready for surfing during the tons of downtime this game provides if you play in a windowed mode (whether that mode be SE's official, or not).

My computer is fairly new, though. If you have an older one, I might say go the xbox route like someone mentioned above.

The game looks amazing on the xbox in my opinion, but you can get your PC to look almost just as amazing if you want.

I do lag less on the xbox versus the PC, however, when I DO lag it's so irritating almost to the point that I want to rip my hair out and throw the damned thing out the window. Of course I have more composure than that, but it is frustrating.

If you're the type who likes to sit back and relax while you play, then go xbox. Pick up a cheap USB keyboard and you'll be set.

Just do whatever is more convenient and comfortable to you. The gameplay isn't drastically different from one console to the other. I personally have a copy for the xbox and PC. That could be an option for you if you and your wife wanted to play together and you only have one PC available.

Well, I have multiple PC's in the house (4 to be exact). But, I'm looking for more uses for my 360, so my wife will stop complaining that I never play it :p. Also, I will be deploying in the near future for 15 months (ugh), so I am thinking more of getting a copy for the 360, as I won't be taking my PC. I will probably pick up a cheap-o laptop for messaging and e-mails to home, but it will more than likely not be a gaming rig. However, I will be taking my 360. One question though,if anyone can answer this... If I have my account on the 360, can I use that account to play on a PC? Like, I have my user name and password from the Xbox, can I use that to log into the PC?

Also, how do expansions work with the Xbox? Like, I'm starting out fresh. Do I buy the newest expansion (wings of the goddess)? Or do I have to buy the original game + the expansion, or the multi-pack that I saw at Gamestop for 49.99?

Once again, all replies are appreciated ^_^.

Go with PC if it's recently been bought/upgraded and you're interested in the best looking graphics, a lot less lag, and being a click away from the net.

I get a constant 29 FPS in areas with a moderate amount of people. In areas with more than 30 people it dips to 20~25. The lowest I've seen is 10~15 with over 50 people. Namely speaking of Dynamis and Aht Urghan's Auction House. However, that's just FPS.

I use my 360 for FFXI sometimes when I want to relax... but it will never have this kind of quality:

Asus P5N-SLI MB
Intel Core 2 Dual E6400
GeForce 8800GTS 320MB

The game is like crack... its best not to start.

Playing on 360 is more stable and less laggy in besiege/dynamis in my experience. Also don't play on a standard TV screen cause its uggly... its possible to display it on a computer flat pannel for the same precision as on pc version.

Personally I don't play on Xbox cause each time the add effect from curse on the Igqira armor kicks in, the xbox freezes, but otherwise its fine... Anyone got this problem? lol.

I recomend getting it for 360 and PC, that way you can play with your wife. If you have different characters.

You can make a LIVE silver account for playing another character in the 360.

If you get the Vana'diel collection 2008 (which includes everything), you'll be fine. If you get the base game (which includes the first three expansions) and WotG for the 360, I think you only need to use the base game for the codes listed in the manual. The WotG disc should have everything you need on it. Just be sure you have a hard drive with enough space. It will eat several gigs of space. Something around 8, if I remember correctly.

You can login from any platform once you have your POL ID. You can jump from 360 to PC to PS2/3 and back again as long as whatever you use has the software installed. As far as expansions, the most cost effective thing to do if you're starting from scratch is buy the full collection (RoZ, CoP, ToAU, and WoTG). You don't have to buy each separately.

I appreciate all the help, and rather than starting a whole new thread and clog things up I'm gonna ask a new question inside this thread...

Ok, I just bought FFXI for the 360 and a copy for the PC for my wife. Not sure if she is going to like FFXI, she's kind of picky about games, so we haven't opened her copy yet. I have about an hour left of updating on my 360... What I want to know is how hard is it for first time players starting out fresh? And what is a good starting job, one that doesn't require crazy gear to be good at. I was thinking something along the lines of WAR or WHM because a party needs a tank/healer (or atleast I assume they do). I've been reading some forums and the general consensus seems to be that there's not much of a low level population. So should I pick a job that's more suited for solo (which i've read is kind of non-existant in this game also) or stick with the WAR or WHM?

In WoW I had a druid, so I'm used to tanking and healing, and even dishing out a little damage. And my wife had a mage.. so if she plays I was thinking BLM for her. Any suggestions?

You and your wife can solo/duo at least to 20. Since you won't have subjobs available, I'd go with WHM and WAR until you unlock subs if you're going to duo. Stock up on items for regen and refresh, potions, antidotes, reraise, warp, etc. and you'll get it done in no time. Gear at those levels isn't ridiculously priced (see ffxiah.com, not hotlinking because it's suspected of installing trojans) and you can easily earn your own with simple quests and drops from the mobs you'll XP on. Good luck and maybe I'll see you in game soon =)

try whm / mnk. Mnk doesnt necessarily tank in the latter part of the game, but it is by far the easiest job to solo on to 20 imo.

Thanks for all the advice. I made an Elvaan WAR (lvl 9 atm) and the wife just installed the game on her PC lastnight. I am going to change to THF so that we can level up together until her WHM gets to same lvl as my WAR then swap back, which will give me a WAR/THF both lvl 9 :D. One question though, should we go with WHM for her or RDM? Will I, as a WAR, be able to do enough damage fast enough to be the only dmg dealer? I've noticed that my damage isn't that great, I use swords and so far only have 1 weapon ability (sword skill - 25).

I've got both versions, and it runs MUCH smoother on PC for me.

Great Axe and Axe are the top weapons for WAR.

Also, welcome to the grind fest!
