Hidden Forums again?

I think one of the main things that brought people from Quetz to QCDN was the ability to have hidden forums. The more I think about it the more I feel it was not the best decision to move away from the hidden forums and replace them with social groups. Social groups have clearly not turned out the best that we had hoped and personally I'm thinking it might be a good idea to bring people back through these. Of course, this would have to be approved by Commodore Reeve first since he said it's usually a strain on the database but...even when we had several users I don't remember having many issues.

Other then approval first, I'd say ask the users what they think. Hidden forums have been gone awhile, so people may have found other means and adjusted accordingly. Might come in handy for XIV, but this far into XI's lifespan, I'm not so sure what to think.

This seems like one of those things you may want to postpone until the new site starts getting traffic (much like it was suggested omitting the flameboard to begin with).

It would only be available for the XIV portion of the site. I'm not into doing anymore developing for the XI site.

In terms of "adjusting accordingly", I'd almost be willing to bet that the adjustment was to create their own forums. Without QCDN effectively hosting the forums, as in the case of scores of linkshells, there was no need at all to come back if they had their own Linkshell forums complete with Off-topic sections and strategy sections.

I support, 100%, the idea of bringing hidden forums (for Linkshells/Guilds/whatever they're called ONLY and ONLY for FFXIV players - no WoW, no Aion, no Guild Wars) back. They were a boon to the site's traffic.

I cannot stress enough only allowing hidden forum creation for Linkshells. No special exceptions like most of our off-topic social groups (like my own Bored at Work group). Having a host for a forum like [Eorzea Sun] would be great - no management costs, a single point of contact for issues, etc. and it would generate traffic to the site, as well as lending loads of credibility to the site owner.

For other players (WoW/Aion/GW) we could point them to social groups.

Absolutely Miros. I support the idea fully :D

Your face? I hate the name change, jsyk.

He means only offer hidden forums to linkshells in game, don't allow users to make a hidden forum on a whim for (in his example) people bored at work.

Pretty much it. lol I know a lot of people made their own forums. If its just for XIV its a great idea. As much as I love XI, looking forward to more XIV related stuff.

Im not sure of what youre talking here guys. You would make XIV's forum some sort of hub for "lses" so they can post their stuff (ex: recruitment, rules, etc.) here instead of having 235567 external websites for recruitment? Sorry if im asking a dumb question. I came a bit late in the game on qcdn and im not exactly famiiar with the concept of hidden forums and groups here.

Also, I'm wondering if the whole issue with server overload (or whatever the reason was that we got rid of them initially) isn't an issue anymore?

Probably not recruitment, as it would be quite ineffective in a forum that's hidden. It's more like just having a private space to talk about amongst yourselves, or to schedule events within the linkshell.

I'm hoping it's not myself, we'll need Reeve to answer and I'm hoping it won't...

This.

The whole reason I joined was cause bigfin had its ownsection here. I really liked having this seperate place with my friends w/o having to create our own forums.
