Higher level NIN EQ

In the lower lvls I'd say it depends on how well your supporting cast is. The more you have to do alone and the longer the fights, the more evasion gear Id go with. WHMs that flash, BLMs that stun promptly when you need it allow you to drop more and more evasion gear. Also, the faster the party kills mobs, the more DD equip you can throw on.

There is no perfect setup, just try and find that nice balance for each party and mob that you are fighting. Idk though, I went with a hybrid DD and evasion setup quite a bit through my lower lvl tanking up to merit pts. However, helping to keep hate was never the reason why I used more DD gear, it was just because I could, so why not? Macro in some damn enmity gear on voke and know what you are doing. DD nin is awsome, but its not always the answer. And neither is a thf...first voke was the devil.

I'm only 64, but I've been going for more of an evasion setup, I'll take +skill where I can get it but if not I've been using +agi and +evasion. I've swapped out several of my pieces for +str/attack full time and I do a full gear change for my weapon skills. I haven't tried going all-out damage yet, especially since I don't have any haste gear; but I've noticed that during most fights I'm only evading a few attacks so I'm probably close to that threshold.

I'd imagine that once I hit 65, I'll have an easier time evading since I've got +12 evasion skill waiting for me.

I'm right behind at 63. Actually after I posted I got a pt as 62 NIN in mt. Z on crawlers and I felt I was getting owned (although the xp was still nice). There was a pair of 64s in the PT, so I figured I might have been on the low side as far as being a tank there went. Hate wasn't an issue as I had a THF, but my shadows were dropping pretty fast, and my enfeebles weren't sticking. On top of that, our refresher was COR, and the WHM was landing enfeebles pretty low as well.

When I dinged 63 things seemed a bit smoother. I'm planning on going after more Ninjitsu skill + gear (earring 35, and torque 65), will this help enfeebles stick, or is that part being a NIN kind of over?

Don't listen to Delsus btw he believes anything a newb spits out on Killing Ifrit without ever experiencing it himself. On VT-IT mobs you will always want to use Sole Sushi because Jin is a multi-hit. Meat is only good for Assault, Limbus, Dynamis stuff where mobs evasion is equivalent to Tough or lower.

Aye, Decidence is right on. Don't eat meat in merit parties I have and it sucks waiting for it to wear off to pop a sole sushi.

As far as setups it is good to be prepared for just about anything. I have macros for eva setup, haste setup, attack setup for ws. Ninja is a very versatile job based on the gear. In Limbus, Dynamis, and used to in Sky be able to hold a link while alliance or party killed with evasion setup, if I switch to haste/merit setup I am usually the highest damage in a party, and ofcourse macro in the attack/str setup for blade:jin.
Depending on the mob when you are leveling you will want eva/acc/or att setups ie on cats in Lab of Onz you will want to go accuracy, on spiders in Boyada you will want every piece of evasion and agility you can get, on easy to tank mobs like gobs just go straight up damage.

I am always switching gear in and out depending on situation or mob so there is no pefect setup or food for that matter.

If your 8/8 katna merits you got to be Lv 75 NIN as only NIN can merit it.

People TP burn now days at 75.

Best TP burns are on T/VT.

Meat is best on T and finish chains on a VT.

Better exp a hour.

Is that clear decience?
The only time meat works for nin is in mire, or if you have an accuracy build (+60 or more acc from gear, after 8/8 katana merits)

The problem with an accuracy build is that you need to sacrifice speed to get it, and losing 10% haste will drop your damage more than meat will increase it.

For merits stick with sushi, put on enough Acc to get up to at least 85%, preferrably 90%, then add haste where you can, then attack.

Until you get to burn parties, keep on enfeebling the mobs. Sticking Hojo will do more than anything else, if you're having trouble landing it cast Raiton (lower earth resist) first. Kurayami and an evasion build will work unless you're on IT mobs

And don't listen to Blazn, he has no clue about anything, I'm sure he's still offhanding his Kraken while the real ninjas know what to offhand:

You honestly shouldn't be worried about losing shadows at this point in time, and post-60 if you need to use the magical circle of fun to keep hate then something is seriously wrong, you're idea of Evasion+ is honestly overrated, Evasion+ is really pointless, Evasion Skill+ on the other hand is nice, when you have a lot of it stacked together. But as Phraust said higher up in levels you will be hardly evading at all and if you're with a decent party the fights will laast a maximum of 2 minutes, I tanked this way from 60-75 and I never had shadow problems or hate problems.

Meh, I say whatever works for you. No such thing as overrated, really. Most people that say it's overated tend to suck. I've never watched or saw you play so I can't say for you but there are a number of others I have caught the horror of them tanking. I had and used all the best Evasion gear, decent Haste (minus belt) set up, and the best DMG gear so I could really care less about the "omg ur way is wrong" point of view. Tanked with my Evasion, WS with DMG, and cast with Haste. Never had hate issues, rarely got into trouble, and used my wheel because it's part of the job. I do agree though once you hit 73-75 and you're in your measly little ol' merit or XP party you probably wont need much evasion at that point but you will for other things.

Either way Meeze, you'll want to have a set of EVA, ATK, and haste gear, in the end. Just test them out and see what you like/works best in what parties/situations.

It will help. I used torque for a bit but now I stick to AF mask and Koga boots. As for actually enfeebing mobs, I just stick with blind. Voke from max range and start casting while it runs to you, doesn't really take away any dmg time. On fast-atacking mob or hard-to-blind ones I'll do Slow but usually just let the rdm or whm do it.

Don't bother with Paralyze.

For the rest, Foo gets a cookie. Only gear I rarely carry now is any enmity gear. At 70+ I was holding hate much better with full-out DD gear. If you get hit once or twice a fight, the extra dmg won't make you loose hate unless your whm is a retard.

Somethin I'm curious about is how effective at keeping hate is Nin's zomgA+Throwing at the higher levels.

I managed to keep mine capped while leveling it for sub, and was slightly amazed at the amount of damage shuriken dish out. Does it just become too unfeasible to rely on it as part of your hate arsenal later on?

I understand where you come from, and I'm not saying "omg ur way wrong" just pointing out what I know from experience. I have ninja at 75, and I have tried Eva, Agi, Att, etc setups, and I found Att to be the best with at most losing one or two extra shadows per fight, and that really shouldn't hurt you to the point of you becoming a lousy tank etc. The elemental Wheel works great up until 55 or so when you start getting more Str and Att gear to use. The wheel itself will gimp your damage and will make your hate a bit more shakey then the dmg you would be doing with your katana. Test it out, parse it yourself as you level, if you are at the point that your katana's are outparsing your ninjutsu each fight then stick with your katanas and only cast a ninjutsu "IF" you need a fast hate grab and voke/warcry is down.

Can't, I haven't played FFXI in quite a while but my NIN was also level 75. I guess too each his own as I didn't really care for my DMG, except on WS. The thing I concentraited on was making healers bored unless in a roaming party then I'd go full DD gear and wouldn't bother bursting or tossing random ele's. Really miss Ninja, probably the only thing about the game that always keeps it in my mind >_<

More like it becomes too goddamned expensive and you have to constantly skill it up to cap. The closest thing to a decently cheap shuriken now you can use is koga shuriken at lv 75 if you stockpile. I've also seen them selling for 800gil at the lowest but finding them cheap is rare. 99k a stack if you buy them for 1k adds up to a shitload of gil lost.
