I'm a Dark Knight in some bad need of skill up for GS AND QUICK!!! Is GS Skill 203 enough to hit mobs and still deal good dmg? Against mainly VT-IT-- mobs? My Scythe is capped at like 232 so...what you guys/gals think? Should I be able to or not?

And also another part of this post was to ask...what do you guys/gals think about mages/melee's skilling up in exp pt's I mean like...not like mine where I'm close but maybe like 150 skill and the mob need's like at least 210 to be hit even...? I don't really care or give a rats ass unless it messes with their casting/mp reserves y'know? what do y'all(omg I can't believe I just said that...) think?

I personally dont endure mages skilling up.

It breaks them down, and makes them lazy for the duration of the PT.
Missing refresh, cures... MBs.. and i believe the time you spend meleeing you can be resting for the next fight. So im anti-mage melee 8)

Your main skills should already be skilling up during an exp party with out you doing anything special. Your other abilities should be done in a skill up party. They are not that hard to find, since you don’t have to really worry about levels too much.

Well when I was lower lv'd NO ONE TOLD ME that I needed to skill up GS...I used one for awhile...but got bitched at because everyone said Scythe was the only good weapon for Dark Knight...assholes... -.- o well I should be able to hit for good dmg anyways :P

Well I dont agree with mages skilling up in most parties, but sometimes you got that Nin tank that never gets hit and can control hate like theres no tomorrow. Parties like these all I cast is haste, haste, haste, and guess what more haste. Sure every 30mins I cast a protectra IV and shellra III. Parties like these I could see a WHM skilling up, heck I just might have if my club level wasnt so unbelivable gimped that I cant hit the mob anyways ^^

Rorith about your GS skill-up in exp party, thats your call. If you can dmg the mob well enough go for it, but if you know that your not dealing out enough dmg, switch to scythe and smash that pretty little mobs face it ^^

I have ran into the same problem. But for a different reason. I knew i would need GS skilled up but in the 40-50 range I could barely (and sometimes NOT) keep just my scythe skilled before I lvled. I found it nearly impossible at those levels to keep both leveled which has led to my GS only being 166 atm.

For clarification, I’ve never played DRK, so I don’t know if Scythe or GS (or both) is consider a main skill, if they are EXP should be fine. A none main skills would be like a RDM’s evasion skill (i.e. pulling hate just to get the monster to hit them).

I figure as long as it doesn't disrupt the purpose of the party (in this case XP), you can do the hokey-pokey naked for all I care.

Things that disrupt XP party:
- if your skill is too low to do any damage/hit consistently. Constant swishing = longer fights, as a melee DD you're leeching off the other pt members if all you do is swish
- breaking the SC/MB (changing to a less effective one or removing altogether)
- hate management (like in Pascal's example)
- MP management
- mages getting killed from nasty AoEs from meleeing
etc

You should probably raise the skill on your own and in skillup parties until you're doing reasonable damage with great sword for XP setup. The other 5 poor bastards didn't sign up for a skillup party, after all.

As someone who has literally been there done that I reccommened getting one last skillup party and 20 more levels.

You won't hit enough or hard enough with ~30 or so under cap.

I had like 5 gs skill from purely the drk flag quest until 63... then i took 2 weeks off of leveling and got that bitch capped. It was not fun but after trying in in exp parties *almost* capped, I'm telling you it just don't work. Sorry :(

If you're asked to keep 2 weapons skilled for XP purposes, I see no problem with someone switching to their 'less skilled' (which is normally only 5-10 points if they've kept at it) to keep them both balanced. As for mages skilling (i.e. WHMs leveling Divine) I don't have a problem with it as long as all the other jobs are being taken care of first. If you want to toss out a Banish to kill the mob, feel free.

Unless you never partied with a Thief pre-48-49 I find this highly unlikely.

There's really one reason that great sword is so incredibly powerful at later levels, and that's spinning slash. The damage/delay ratio of a great sword is nice and all, but a DRK with a scythe can likely out-do that (pre-225 skill).

I'd say to join skill up parties for great sword, because unless you have spinning slash, it just really isn't that much better (if at all) than scythe. Without great sword leveled, you don't have access to a level 3 chain (nor the very impressive numbers of spinning slash itself), but with scythe leveled, you do. I'm not saying that level 3 chains are the end-all damage dealers, but they're definitely more powerful then a level 1 or 2 chain, if they can be made, that is.

Just my opinion.

I'd say just do skill up parties for GS until you get Spinning Slash. Then let the exp party decide which weapon they want you to use after that for skillchains.

As for mages meleeing, I'm against it. I've never melee'd once in an exp party. They had me come for my magic. Not for me to give extra TP to the mob so he can do more damage to the tank. I do skill up parties or skill up while helping someone as long as they aren't going to die because of it.

I melee with my BRD but ONLY after putting songs up on mages and melee, and making sure my other songs stick on the mob. If a song wears off while I'm meleeing, I unlock myself off target and get the song on them again. I have capped sword so I know I'm helping a -bit-.

I personally do not mind a melee skilling up in an exp party as long as they are not too low to hit or not doing the damage that they can. Also unless there's a better skillchain with your main weapon, by all means, go for it. Skill up all you want. Just don't slow down the fights. That'll be slowing down the exp for the other 5 who came out to get good exp.

Even if I wanted to, I couldn't skillup my 53 Blm's staff in a party. I was in a bad party once (well, more than once), all the other mages were meleeing, we weren't getting any exp, melees were pulling hate, links etc - you know, you're average Crawler's Nest party. I figured, the other mages aren't being yelled at for meleeing, noone's getting exp anyway, and at least everyone else is getting skillups, so I reluctantly pulled my staff and joined them. My staff isn't as low as many other mages' because I like helping my LS on all their events, so I get to melee a lot. That said, I still couldn't hit the mob. What was I thinking? Melees miss the mob as a matter of habbit, and they're geared solely for landing melee attacks. I'm a blm with int gear, and I think I saw a .2 once in the remaining hour of the party. Whether I'm for or against mages skilling in a party is beside the point (though I'm against). Unless I'm drastically worse than other mages, skilling weapons in a party doesn't happen. I had my opportunity, I took it, and found out that the people that rant about a mage's place in a party were right. I don't land attacks on IT mobs.

Yo, Ronith it all depends, if you break out your GS and your missing a lot even with +acc and acc food. Put it away and find a skill up party that will get you close to your cap. Once it's close like withing 10-5 points from cap it's fine to use in a exp party since you'll skillup a bit faster and still do decent dmg.

Once you get both scythe and GS capped at your level it gets kinda easy to skill both up while in exp parties. Just uh.. let the party know you're going to use GS, and adjust skillchains as needed. Though im sure you know that already.

You might be able hit consistently if you use sushi. If you can land most of your hits, I wouldn't see a problem with it.
