I was on the other night seeking for the first time in ages as lvl 23 BLM(wanted to get 25-30 to sub to my WHM to fix it to lvl 50...gotta fix the sub jobs) and some of my ls friends told me people hate BLMs now. Why? I really didn't think it would be an issue to get to lvl 30 in parties and I really stink at soloing jobs(plus FFXI is not really made of it). I'll admit that I was only seeking for an hour and it was late Monday night but still not one tell and there weren't enough low level players around for me to consider trying to make a party.(which I very well may do)

I really don't get why everyone says that they hate BLMs...I'm not great but at least I know not to overnuke XD

From what I recall, manaburning, BLM solo, and the utter sad death of skillchains+magic burst with the advent of TP burns destroyed black mage's credibility (outside of events like Einherjar and Dynamis).

Manaburning encouraged overnuking.
Soloing doesn't teach a party dynamic (duh)
TP burning negated the necessity for a Black mage in a party.

I still cry to this day about the death of skillchaining+mb. /tear
I enjoying soloing at times, I do love a good manaburn.. but nothing beats an old fashion Tank, Healer, Buffer/Healer, Two DDs, and a BLM. :D

Single-player RPGs don't have TP burns, amirite? :D

can't sum it up any better then that. this and the fact that the game's been out so long people rather look for the finished product then help groom a new one.

Believe me, Shadowneko, I am a firm (firm) believer in the ways of the Black Mage. I loved the job almost as much as I loved Dark Knight. The only reason I didn't reach 75 was out of sheer despair from not being able to get a party invite, and things like Level Sync being just "too little too late".

The reason we blms are looked down on is because of the sheer amount of awesome that we contain.

oh and that.

Amen Zalt, as for me, it's rare I find a blm (the rare times I end up starting a party) that doesn't overnuke or know how to mb anymore.

I've done traditional parties with blms I trusted before/knew they knew how to hold mp though a xp chain/wouldn't overnuke and ...because of the death of sc'ing...paired them with a blu so they could magic burst. (It tends to be easier to talk a blu into selfscing than a party into scing.) This was before people went pink bird mad though and people would do mamools or trolls now and then..

But people don't touch those anymore...so I haven't in ages...

I always wanted to do trolls in a "normal" exp party with my blm... but can't even find a paladin to tank for them since they'd rather do that thing in the past.

Don't despair just yet Neko. I managed to take my BLM all the way to 40 by partying, although a good chunk of that was mana burns in Sanctuary of Zi'Tah. I sucked at soloing too, so it was exp party or bust.

My biggest complaint would have to be the lack of skillchains in parties. I wanted to practice magic bursting but no one would give me anything to work with. It wasn't for lack of trying either, but every time I suggested skillchaining I just got laughed at or ignored. It's really quite sad that I have more experience skillchaining and magic bursting on my Red Mage than on Black Mage. What is this world coming to?

Cid; Unfortunately now a days, if you want a SC, talk to a blu in xp.. Blue mages are the only ones that SC AT ALL in a xp party anymore from my experience.

Georgebobbilly: If I managed to do that today, I'd talk some of my friends into it. And yes, I'd prefer to work with the blm somewhere else first so I can see them in action. As whm, I really really hate blms that overnuke; half the time if I'm stuck with that, the blm kills himself since I couldn't cure fast enough and the tank couldn't keep up :hiding:

Tho yes, I mostly leveled blm in either LS parties, soloing, manaburns, or duo/trios. and I started when blms got actual parties. So I remember, but I'm awful rusty..

my leveling experience was a little off. I of course took blm to 37 in old school exp parties pre ToAU for my whm, then continued it to 50. at that point I started doing endgame and pretty much devoted my time to that instead of leveling anything, by the time I decided to lvl blm again it was a whole different job and I had to learn how to solo with it... luckily I started at the point where I could 1 shot pets so I never subbed nin on it XD. Still... I miss magic bursting.

how can someone with the name "Omniyoji" comment on the funniness of my name o.O

I leveled BLM to 75 pre-ToAu and I have heard a lot of complaints from BLM's leveling since my return that they don't get invited. I, like others posted here, cry for the death of skillchains/MB'ing because that was what truly made BLM amazing. It was the team work of it! Gave me nerd goosebumps just thinking about it now. Asuran Fists >> Ground Strike >> Darkness >> Blizzard IV BOOM!!!! Oh.. those we're such good days.

What I find interesting now is that BLMs are severely discredited while leveling yet when it comes to end game, all answers are "throw BLM's at it" (for lack of people wanting to do things the normal/hard way) yet no one wants to properly train a BLM (like Zal said.) I won't be on for a few says, but OP if you ever see me on I'll sync to you and gladly party with your BLM.

If I hear another person talk about training someone *else* in an MMO, I am going to tear some throats out.

Train train train. Lol

No but really, I'm not saying it negatively. I'm saying that rather than just asserting that BLMs dont get invites because they overnuke and don't know how to party, why not help that not be the case? I find just assuming that BLMs are overnuking un-party intelligent players more offensive than saying lets help make them better :P

and why would that be o.O

because i had to listen to it for the last...oh, two years of my playtime.

I know what you mean, and I agree with you. Just saying, those were the contributing factors to a larger opinion of what black mages became.
