How come FF12 is pretty much FF11? :\

So I picked up Dragon Quest the other day, and it had a demo of FF12, I put in my PS2 and turned it on, played a great trailer for the game, and then two options of play, in terms of combat:
The 1st option pauses battles when you open a menu, giving you time to think, and get to items etc.
The 2nd option the fighting goes on even when you're going through the menus.
Once you start playing, it's kinda like FFXI, all the mobs are out, some aggro, some dont, you have to buff your party etc.
It's feels like FFXI offline, with an AI team that you can issuse commands to, with a serious graphics overhaul.

I dunno but it just doesn't feel like a real FF game to me..
So anyone else played it? Thoughts?

So.... That's how the battle system is gonna be like in FFXII. I think SE wants tthe same feel in gameplay from FFXI because of new age stuff. I think SE wants to take a huge turn (like Resident Evil 4 did with thier battle system and it was also an excellent turn). So really this isn't the first time they decided to change the battle system or do something different with FF. I guess the other reason why it feels like FFXI is because they want other gamers to feel what FFXI feels like in terms of FFXII's battle system. Could also mean that they want more and more people to play FFXI and make more money. Buisness is buisness with SE. Besides, playing FFXII should be a good break from FFXI anyway if you look at it that way.

Or they just wanted to get away from the run on a world map, bdfibdfijijobjtroibjtroijbmt, battle ground fight surf menus, kill mobs, get exp and phat lewt, back to map scene scenerio that they have been doing since the ancient days of 8 bit. Call it advancement.

The RPG market was extreamly limited in what it could do with its battle system in the early games. Like almost all things, although we're still getting a wicked story, we're also getting more realistic battle scenarios. I think that RPG developers have always wanted to use these kind of systems but up until now, haven't had a whole lot of breadth to use it. I think that square released FFX using the usual formula, but they also released Kingdom Hearts which was met by overwhelming mass praise. The developers are trying to give us more of what we like: super-fantastic, exciting, death defying real-time combat for our RPGs. I, for one, am excited about the new battle system.

Exactly.

Or the whole transition to battle scene, that was great(jk) Anyways the combat is sorta like XI, w/o actual people controlling your party, instead it's you, or the gambit system, and in some ways it is good, considering the gambit AI I've seen plays better than some people I've grouped up with on FFXI lol. Anyways the story/characters/development system are still gonna be on par with other FF's, plus Espers are back, some people say XI wasn't a real FF, but it is, only because it's online some people missed out. Anyways I am excited about XII, and I know a lot of others are as well. If you don't consider it to be an FF that's you, but you're only basing your opinion on a roughly 20 minute demo(in which you couldn't even open the demo and characters are overpowered) that only consists of battles when the full game is gonna be great and 50+ hours. Anyways the no random battles is great, the mobs that aggro or not are great, hell the mobs even fight each other, I don't see that in XI lol, mandragora attacking a sliepnir :D And the active mode is more FF than the wait, it plays out more like ATBs, instead a reverse gauge, you select the ability first then wait on the gauge whether it's an attack, spell, ability, item, etc to do it, as opposed to past FF's where you wait for the gauge to fill first before you can select an ability. Mobs do also respawn eventually so you can still constantly xp in areas. So like Shaunessy said, yes it is advancement. O and Hironobu Sakaguchi said himself FFXII is an FF, hopefully you do by the time it releases and play it :P Anyways sorry for the tl;dr, shoot me! Plus Hashmalum, the Earth Summon has an ability called Roxxor, hilarious :O

Dragon quest rocks atleast Devi, so thats a plus. I wish I could put that game down ... when I get to play it! :-D

Excited about the battle system

annoyed about that whole "mission" crap like it was in FFX-2 :\

le sigh... and I REALLLY hope it's completely free moving like the old FFs (not including tactics :P). FFXs only downfall in my opinion was the linear maps x.x I like free roaming :D

I've never really cared about the free roaming issue. It's not like you can actually do anything interesting in the areas you free roam to. :P

I mean, given the choice between an interesting on-rails RPG or a boring wide-open one (I'm looking at YOU, Morrowind,) I'll take the linear one.

Morrowind boring O.O have you gone crazy..

the most fun you can get out of a game is complete non linear. It just doesn't get better than that. Why do you think so many peeps play mmos?

Dragonquest 8 does indeed rock Falsey XD
What little time I've has this week to game, has been spent in it.

I personally like the way FFXII is going, it seems to be taking a lot of the things I really enjoy about FFXI and letting me do them without the inevitability of human stupidity ruining my experience.
At least this way if my pt wipes, I have only myself to blame.

I wonder if we will get the same or close to visual changes in armor/weapons etc like we see in FFXI?

It's too early for me to really form a concrete opinion but I am a little wary of what I played. I will say on the active mode it is the first time I've died by unintentional aggro in a non-MMO Final Fantasy game. :D Stupid invisible phantom mobs.

For the most part DQ8 owns my freetime right now.

Yar DQ8 eating up my free time too, damn you Munchie!!! Slime Knights 4 Life :O err Ok I'll shut up now and go back to DQ, anyways I am looking forward to FFXII.
