How do you know when you have taken the game to far.

This post should be titled "Warning: WoW may cause death in children."

Seriously, how did the girl die? It says suffocation but not on what. I don't see a "direct" connection to WoW but hey, any bad publicity their way is good for FFXI. (And don't flame me for making light of the situation, I know thats a horrible thing but its more bad parenting than anything, the girl is responsible for her own death in the end if she was choking on something she shouldn't have been swollowing.)

She was 4 months old in bed. So that means she most likely rolled over face down and suffacated. Most infants at that age can not yet free themselves if they get stuck face down and suffacate to death. It isn't an entirely uncommon way for infants to die and could have happened with the parents in living room taking a nap.

The mothers are this board can probably elaborate much better on this as babies are far from my specialty.

how the baby died

when you put a infant to sleep the tend to roll over. There are pads you can buy to keep them on there back. Thats were the term put your baby "BACK" to sleep. They are not strong enough to lift there head if there asleep on there stomach.

 That's sickening

On a side note i just found out recently that the whole belly thing was a bad idea, however that's how chris has been sleeping since we brought him home so i try my best to watch out for all that .. SIDS BAAAAAAAAAD.

HOW?

i gotta know how a 4 mo old baby left at home by parents with a gaming addiction could possibly be responsible for her own death wether she was choking on something she wasen't spose to be trying to swallow or not. I have a 4 month old and am lucky enough to be an at home dad, and a damn good one i might add for having a slight MMO addiction myself. There is baby time then there is game time, and never the twain shall meet for me. Bedtimes and Naptimes are for gaming, if you can't handle that than quit the game or give up your child as your priorities are obviously beyond whacked.

My husband (Chasym) and I both play FF. I was very surprised when I read that article being that we have a five month old daughter. We do play the game when she is awake.... she loves to watch the screen, especially when its her dad's character or when he's playing Halo 2. If she's not in her bouncer or laying on the floor or on the folded out futon (where we can still keep an eye on her), she's in her crib keeping herself amused. I am able to keep an eye on her then as my PC (on which I play the game) is in her room.

If for some reason we have a big event going on that we're both involved with, like a Promyvian run or something, my mother-in-law watches our daughter as they live only a block away. I only remember for certain this occuring once ever.

The part I don't understand though is why they wouldn't even think about letting the mother-in-law watch their infant while they were gone. I would never consider leaving my child home alone for even 5 minutes.

ANd Mokk is right... How could the infant be responsible for her own death? When they're at that age, they tend to put anything they can get their hands on in their mouth as they are teething and do not know any better. That's what the parents are for... to make sure they don't do things like that... but in this case, I have to agree that I believe that it was SIDS from laying on her stomach.

This wont hurt WoW at all. I fail to see how bad parenting due to game addiction will hurt WoW and make FFXI better in any way. People may be stupid but not stupid enough to blame it on the titled game of choice by the couple. If anyhting it's getting the game name out there and more publicity. All video games come with a risk of serious addiction not just WoW and everyone knows that. No flame intended by the way I just don't see how you could possibly be right. I just see that FFXI pride that so many of you posses that really makes no sense...you love everything FFXI and the min. someone goes to another game (mmo) to play or in subject it's always blind or useless hate.

It's not that they left for another game, that's fine. It's just when they come back and say "wow, you're still playing that shitty XI? You should quit and join me in XXXXX" that people get mad. You are right that this won't effect WoW or XI though. Although, I'm sure there are some people that would blame the game and not the parents primarily; prolly the same people who say games like GTA is ruining America.

It's truely sad that this happened. The fact that they were playing WoW doesn't matter, it could have been any game, what's sad is that their gross negligence cost them the life of their daughter.

I understand that very much so however it usually tends not to be the case. Usually people say I'm bored and want some info or something to that nature then flames insue. However, I do agree there should be none of that. Please read my last post on page 3 of this topic http://www.qcdn.org/viewtopic.php?t=13020&start=30
,especially my last paragraph, to get a better view on how I feel about it all.

Your last comment I agree fully. It's sad that some people can't grow and accept responsiblity. What happened to that poor child is nothing short of sickening on the parents part. It's sad when you put a anything over your own flesh and blood. (*EDIT* substituted anything in replace of video game)

Amen to that.

OMG, I failed to notice it was a baby that died... I'm sorry. I thought it was slightly older girl because they said "four month" and I accidentally read it "foul mouthed" so you can see where my mistake was and such. Leaving a baby home alone is never forgiveable no matter what. I don't care what is going on, you NEVER leave a baby alone. Some people need to be taken out back and tied to a tree to be bludgened with a shovel. Well, please, no dead baby jokes while this is fresh in the mind... Give it a week to restart with those...

Sorry I posted that before reading your last post. It was a tragedy that the 4 month old baby died because of their parents addiction to the game. And yes, I honestly beleive that 99% of people who play MMORPGs for more than a few months become in some way addicted to them. Oh well. :x

The fact that they just left the child with nobody is the real issue. It doesn't have anything to do with WoW or MMOs. The people could have been going to a fucking rodeo or anything equally stupid.
Negligence for sure...

But if the media would lie to talk smack about WoW, that doesn't mean it's good for FFXI. WoW is an MMO, as are many games. The problem was that no personal accountability was taken to ensure the safety of the child. They acted like WoW was crack and they needed a fix. Fuck that. If they took the child with them for their "fix", it would still be alive.

That's definitely criminal.
