How hard is it to actually get Carbuncle's Ruby?

Ok, I'm currently a level 28 BLM, and am planning to start my quest to become a summoner when I hit level 30 (and get a fair amount of exp into it in case I die during the quest). According to my guidebook Carbuncle's Ruby is extremely rare (I know that it is RareEx). To any summoners out there, should I expect a repeat of the frustration of the subjob quest? Or is it harder/easier? Thanks.
 
well, i did it soloing leeches in qufim as rng one time when i was a lil bored.
took me about 20 leeches to get it.
but another time i went to help a whm friend get theirs and it took us 4 hours ><.
so many leeches i lost count.
its kinda pure chance, could take 10 minutes, could take 5 hours. ; ;

Well, as Synical said, it's completely random, so my experiences aren't very likely to help, but perhaps they can encourage you to give it a shot :p

I've gotten the ruby three times now. Twice when hunting for it, once at random, while going into Ordelle for keys (killed a leech for the heck of it, got the ruby, had to throw it away).
First time was in Buburimu, just after I had hit 30 WAR. I was doing the BRD quest, and figured I might as well just try a leech for fun. First kill dropped my ruby. I didn't have THF leveled at the time, so no TH.
Second time was also in Buburimu. Some random BLM asked me if I could help him get it (I was a 33 SAM at the time, I think). Was a bit harder this time, but still managed to get it within half an hour. I think I had THF at 15 here, but I'm not sure.
Third time was, as mentioned above, completely by chance, in Ordelle.
 
well when I was hunting for it with members of my LS one night in bubu we spent two hours and didn't find a thing, but in Qufim over the span of a couple hours and finishing the BST quest we scored three rubies off of leeches there.
 
Getting the ruby isn't that bad...Allthough i do reccomend hunting In Qufim for it. However getting all the weather effects after the ruby is a bitch.... :evil:
 
I got my first ruby while exp'ing off leeches in Qufim. Must have been back last Novemeber. It was the only ruby I have ever gotten in Qufim. I remember trying to help Himura get his ruby awhile back in Qufim, I remember we killed a ton of leeches with no drop and then we decided to head over to Buburimo and got a ruby on the first drop >.< Also helped somebody else get a ruby, can't remember who but we went to Buburimo and seemed to get it fairly quickly.
 
I actually got all my weather effects, except ice, on the first day i got the Ruby, purely by chance. I guess I was traveling alot that day, but not in search of weather. Seemed like everytime I entered a new zone some kind of weather was going on.
 
This thing is impossible to get! I've been hunting Leeches in Buburimu Peninsula for 6 hours and not one ruby! I think I'm just going to forget about becoming a summoner, this is impossible.

Unlike all you lucky !@#%!#%, it took me a weekend!! It's funny coz when you're looking for it.. it doesn't drop(spent 3 hours a day killing leeches in qufim for 3 consecutive days), only when you are out and about.. in my case I wanted to try vorpal blade, it drops after one kill. I swear.. Square is having a blast watching me get pissed.
 
It averaged me 1.5 hour per ruby in Buburimu, got 3 so far, including my own. And amazingly enough, it's when I solo'ed for my ruby that I got it the fastest, and when I partied with a L57 THF for a L31 MNK that it was the slowest.

As for the weathers... I got extremely lucky for the Fire element. I went to Selbina to deliver lettuce for Gil and fame, and decided to return to Windurst. I missed the boat by about 10 seconds. I logged out, logged back in 8 minutes later... FIRE ELEMENT!!! I rushed out of Selbina, not caring for my ferry fee, and got it!

I was one lucky kitty. Now if only I had such luck on the ferry... Curse those Sea Horrors...
 
I just got mine this past weekend. I went with three other friends to buburimu. The first ruby dropped on the third leech...we lotted and I lucked out and got first one. Probably about 45min to an hour later the next one dropped and shortly after we got our third. Had to wait about two more hours though for the final one to drop. Took longer than that for me to get my damn fire weather affect though. I was JUST about to give up when it finally changed. The others I got relatively quickly and easily even ice..using silent oil to get thru the pass.
 
I've been trying for 3 RL days, about 14 hours of hunting Leeches. No ruby.
 
It'll make it that much more awesome when you do get one though...Then you'll get mad because it turns into a Carbuncle and you've gotta treck your butt from the Altepa desert to La Thein to collect that atomic rat's butt. Then you'll be so excited, you'll keep that atomic rat out! You'll solo stuff as a mage and then you'll hit Lvl 20 - you will begin to yell at your rat for not completing his third SL on Ramuh for the 5th time in a row. You will lock yourself in your mog house and cry....When you finally do get Ramuh you'll be mad at him - "Why don't you hit those gobbos as hard as you hit me Ramuh!!!?" You'll yell! He'll just chuckle and smile....and drain your MP. But it's all good - you settle into your roll as Cure Tank and Group Buffer, and you'll have fun! Go Summoner!!

Haha, I got mine while killing leeches in Buburimu when waiting for Bogy to spawn for SJ quest. Someone asked me to help, so I started killing stuff between Bogy spawns and got a ruby on my 5th or 6th leech.

I hadn't really thought about summoner as my advanced job and unlocked it "just in case" but played with it a bit the other night (got it to level 3! woot!) I'm curious though..I saw a level 14 summon Ramuh in the Dunes the other day. I wondered how that could be possible since I have heard the battles are VERY difficult and even level 20's sometimes have to do them several times before winning.
 
There are two battles you can do

Lvl 20 - You have to solo these battles with only Carbuncle. The only job you can use in these battles is the summoner

Lvl 60+ - You can use any job to do these battles in a party and unlock all the avatars for your Lvl 1 summoner. You must have the summoner job unlocked.

So the person you saw with Ramuh more than likely has a high level character he did the battles with ^^
 
Well it took 16 hours but I GOT IT!!!!!

I went to the house of the hero and now I must gather the 7 weather effects. Wish me luck!
 
Well I have 5 (those are easy) all I need now is Ice and Heat. I know I can get heat at Valkurm Dunes and ice at Beacudine Glacier (or Batallia Downs, but it's rare) but I'm not sure how to get to the glacier alive.
