To figure out the /check thingy?

I was just sitting here playing FFXI and just killing sheep for fun in West Ron when I thought to myself.. "lol.. I don't check these bastards anymore"

which made me remember when I never knew about the checking of monsters..

it took me about.. a week
nobody told me how to use it T_T

I knew pretty early on that I was supposed to check before engaging, but I never really did it. Now I'm a chronic checker. I travel through zones checking every aggressive mob I pass to make sure it's EP- or less and won't aggro. Checking before fighting is a moot point for me now. Long gone are the days when I can actually solo a mob that's even close to my level. Low EP is as tough as it gets w/o a pt, and even then I'm always one mistake from death, so I don't even bother.

Serious. For a PLD ,EP-- really means EM++, lol.

But I remember before I even stepped outside the gates into East Ron, a nice guy walked me through the entire process of selecting, Checking, and engaging a monster. He even gave me 1k start up gil lol. Awesome guy. Sometimes I wish I was back on Phoenix where I started.

Friend of mine who was already playing told me about it... then got his brother to buy me the best DD weapon for a puny whm and helped Pwr Lvl me to about... 6. Ah good times good times, back when I though the Brady Games guide knew everything /sigh.

lol, i have taken upon my self to do the same...everytime i see one of those "?" i ask them if they're a mule or new, you can usually tell the Newbs. if im in windy ill PL the first 3-4 lvs while explaining the system and give them 10k and show them how not to get ripped off at the AH -.- hopefully in the long run they wont end up being nOObs.

Its the first thing I learned >.>

I want to say I read the instruction booklet and Brady guide while I was at work and it covered that. Then I went home and installed. I am pretty sure I was checking right out of the gate.

two months.
yup.

a month to learn how to set a default chat mode (/cm l/p/s)

you can change your chatmode with a / command? ... news to me. I always just target myself and press over on the chat command....

on my 1st day of playing in west Ronfaure

Jaggedy-Eared Jack

/Check
Impossible to Gauge

walk away ....

Took me a few hours. But before I even logged in the first time, I scraped up all the information I could on the game. Which, at the time, there wasn't much in English. But I did get some hints from the JP about checking monsters prior to engaging to help out my chances of survival.

lol yeah, about my 2nd week of playin or so. I kept wondering why i could kill and orc then 2 min later get my ass handed to me by another of the same kind. Thankfully one of my LS friends said, "Well, what does it check?"

hehe.. mine was kinda like that.. I'll go take down some orcs.
but then a rabbit will kill me..

First day. Noticed the check button, thought "hey, that's cool," and immediately started using it on enemies. Stayed away from anything posing even match or higher. Although, at first i thought that every monster of the same class had the same difficulty, so it surprised me when i could slaughter one hare then get slaughtered myself by the next.

Theres a /check command?

I Think i saw Marajade use it when i used to watch him play because i had 5 months of different things that kept me from playing lol. So i used it my first day

I am proud to say i learned how to /check before i learned how to heal. Yeah... I hit the check button on my mini menu but when I first started i was thinking "Final fantasy! Where do i buy potions >_> <_<" Then some nice guy said my health was low i should hit * on the numpad and i was like "Neo: Whoaaaa"

On a bit of a related note, I lvl'd whm and blm to 20 and 15 respectivly before I found out that I had a weapon skill with wands >.>

I kinda noticed it when I first started, never had anyone really help me when I first started since I didn't even have a keyboard for my ps2 yet on my first day.

I'm the type of person to look around at everything in a game too. My very first day I explored all of Windurst and talked to every single NPC I could, which took me about 3 hours at least since Windy is so huge... Then I finally went out to fight and fought some mandys and bees, and before I knew it I got attacked from behind by something and got killed.

Thought to myself, wtf! It was a Yagudo, and I didn't know anything about aggro and stuff but I was only lvl 1 anyways. I had a little help here and there as I solo'd rdm mostly all the way up to 15 before getting into a pty in the dunes.
