Jeez Bigbroon that's crazy. When mine broke for the third time I gave up on it. It's sitting on a shelf at the top of my laundry closet and has been for like 2 years. I'm considering getting it repaired now ... that or sell it to my friend offering to buy it from me (despite it being broken):shok:

Yeah, but it's like Chasym says. However unbelievable it is that the same thing keeps happening, it does. I had a theory with Ipods too, because I have owned 5 Ipods. EVERY TIME, when it broke, I was a couple of weeks after the 1 year warranty ran out.

3 of my Xbox repairs have costed the £50-ish it costs to send it and have it repaired, the rest were free. Believe me when I say it's not about the money any more, it's the principle. I can understand my original Xbox having a fault, and I can also understand that the sheer figures that are published as to how many xbox's are faulty should be taken with 2kg of salt. However, I sent that xbox back, had it "repaired", and a few months later, it broke. Rinse and repeat 10 more times, and you're at where I'm at now. EVERY TIME I ask them to just send me a new one, and they say no.

Incidentally, guess what has started happening over the past few weeks?

Bigbroon inserts Fifa 10 into his xbox.

Reading Disc...

Open Tray

Bigbroon opens tray, then shuts it.

Reading Disc...

Open Tray

Rinse this and repeat for...10-45 minutes, and Fifa works!

I think to myself, "Ok, maybe it's just the disc, like it wasn't the disc the previous 4000 times this happened, but maybe." I open the Godfather boxset I received for my birthday (brand new and sealed) and put in the first disc. 10 seconds later, "Open Tray." So I think ok, it's fucked again, but I REALLY CRAVE FIFA RIGHT NOW, so I'll keep trying. First time I try, I receive a message saying:

"TO PLAY THIS GAME, PUT IT INTO AN XBOX 360 CONSOLE."

This is the best message I have ever received from MY XBOX 360. Laser faulty? Cool. RRoD? Cool. I'm not an xbox any more? WHAT THE FUCK!?

Newsflash: Bigbroon's xbox is now a toaster.

Yeah, I laugh when I read it in your post, but I've had that message too and it wasn't so funny at the time... Way to go Microsoft.

PS: I don't remember how the problem was resolved. I think I may have smashed on it a few times.

Heh I've actually had that msg multiple times. Best way to really read it... turn your head slightly askew.

My 360 is giving the same 'Open Tray' message. From what I've read it seems like it's the DVD reader. I'm not going to tear my box apart yet to play with it, so for now I've found a temporary fix. You can take your first and firmly and repetitively pound on the box around where the disc would sit while being read, and eventually it will read the disc. Don't beat it like you're angry with it, but a steady pound while it's trying to read does the trick. You just need to play with it to find the right spot to hit it.

Edit: Lay it on it's side while you're doing this, I would think you run the risk of scratching the disc if the machine is upright while you're banging on it.

well i can finally be added to the list. My elite died lastnight a month before its 3 years of service.
It kept freezing while playing 1 vs 100, i opened it up, dusted it out, cleaned it all up, put it back together and went back to playing, then it froze again. Restarted, froze on the boot up logo, and then when i turned it on no video appeared at all, no matter what i did.
no red ring, nothin.
took it apart again, checked everything, still didnt work.
Took it apart today, did the extensive chip cleaning, replaced thermal grease, added a new heatsink, nothin. but i get the red ring now which means the video chip is dead. Good thing its so close to income tax time i guess, but i gotta cancel gettin a ps3 now and get a replacement xbox. I am gonna be bored for awhile.
