how much does .net & .org suck for businesses?

Should businesses use .com domain names?

  • Yes, if it isn't .com, then it fails at business presentation.

Call me unflexible, or old school, or whatever, but businesses that run off of .net or .org domains just piss me off.

I realize that good domain names are hard to come by, and thus people resort to .net .org or any of the other TLDs. However, that's not what they were made for.

Ironically I find myself in a position where the only .com name I want is taken, but all others are not (including .us .biz .info and other crazy stuff).

What's your take on non .com domain names for businesses?

Shouldn't matter. It's just an address unless it comes down to kind of mapping and efficiency issues I'm unaware of.

In my opinion you should own .com .net .org and any common way that you could misspell your domain. No sense losing traffic because someone types in the wrong address.

And yes .com is the most important one.

I land in 2 boats... on one hand... almost everything that is not commercial/business should be *.net unless it falls into non-profit/charity, in which it would be *.org.

This site imo would be qcdn.net.

Thing is, *.com was associated with the internet because that was the most common extension people used when browsing stores online... So *.com is what *.net should have been.

*.net or *.com are the way to go

Yeah, when I made QCDN both *.net and *.com were already taken. I was on Mithaniel Marr in EQ and we had Mithaniel Marr Daily News, so that kind of stuck with me and *.org was the only way to go.

The reason I like *.com so much is that in IE you can just type the name (i.e. 'cnn') and hit ctrl+enter and it will complete the URL to be http://www.cnn.com

Could just be a matter of convinience, but I miss that a lot for non *.com URLs.

For whatever reason, typing swishiee into the address bar takes you to my YTMND profile instead of Swishiee.com. :P

I don't think it matters too much, although when it comes to big businesses, I sometimes think they should be .com instead of the others. Smalltime (or personal) should use whatever's available.

.com is more common. if you knew of a company and wanted to find them online, majority of people will do companyname.com first
