I'm no economist, but I have an idea and I wonder what smarter people than me think of it.

I'm wondering what would happen if SE started selling cheap gil to players.

This is what I _think_ would happen.

1.) RMT out of a job. SE can make gil by executing a line of code, so they can always undercut the RMT.

2.) Inflation. This is not necessarily terrible. As the RMT gradually move to different games, SE could (over the long term) battle inflation by raising prices on gil. Additionally, while things would cost more, sales would earn more.

3.) With disappearance of RMT, crafting becomes profitable again due to responsible sellers not flooding the market. Farming also becomes more viable for the same reason.

It seems to me that in the long run, this would reward SE and honest crafters / farmers while discouraging RMT activity. There would still be gil buyers, but over time they would be paying more and more money for less and less purchasing power.

What do y'all think? Also go to Lower Jeuno and buy Dorado Sushi off my bazaar plox :)

I think thats like solving an insect problem by burning down the house. It might work, but its way too ... 'wrong.'

#3 makes me chuckle. "Responsible crafters". Most of the dumb crafters out there aren't RMT.

Yeah, the crafts weren't crashed because of the gil sellers, they were crashed because dumbasses bought gil and power leveled their way to 100. Having SE sell the gil would just trash the economy even further.

In case you haven't noticed(and apparently you haven't), the economy has been doing much better with less gil in the system; having SE just magically add gil into the system would break things again pretty fast.

Another reason they couldn't do this is it would discriminate against the "poor" players who don't want to spend money buying gil to get everything out of the game. Due to the high inflation you'd pretty much have to buy gil from SE...I've definitely seen things like this ruin games in the past. Would end up with too many noobs with stuff they didn't deserve too...

This post could be more appropriately titled "How SE can break the entire game with one action."
What you think would happen and what would actually happen are very different, sorry.

Nothing like turning ffxi into a battle of credit cards for rare gear.

That would trash the economy, the people who are well off irl, will buy millions and millions of gil, then use it recklessly, the smarter players will play the market and "profit" from their dumb decisions, but not nearly at the rate they're able to buy gear cause of the magical credit card.

End result: Christmas of '05 except, the runaway inflation never stops. Gil sellers will be able to undercut SE until gil is worthless before going out of buisness, the SE/seller price war will crash the market. If SE doesn't price gil low enough, gil sellers get the advantage.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned that RMT is against the ToS and it wouldn't be any different if players were doing RMT with SE.. its still against the ToS and therefore would never happen :)

All SE would have to do is append the ToS to let them, and only them sell gil. It's a very minor reason why they wouldn't do it.

i already RMT with SE.
i pay them 13.95 a month for gil, and a character, and all my other junk in ffxi.

if SE wanted to sell gil, they would just change the ToS.. i'm sure they have a "we may change the ToS at any moment" clause in there somewhere.

Sounds like you want to battle RMT, not fix crafting. Fixing crafting in FFXI is well, not gonna happen. There are some goods things with the system they use. But those things are few and far between. :(

how about making npcs worth buying from and selling to?

Would put a ton of gil back into the economy, which is what we don't want after they just went to all the trouble of taking it out...

it would be much more appropriate to make gil un-tradable and un-mailable. Would it be a hassle for players? Definitely. Would the economy eventually become stable, and would gilsellers/buyers be removed? Yes.

The only way that people could transfer gil, then, is through the AH, and if that were the case... It would be very easily tracable.

Byebye teletaxi with that idea.

It doesn't take much to make an economy stable when everyone quits the game.

That would be an utterly horrible idea, it would completely fuck endgame linkshells since you'd never be able to hand out shares of the money.

I dont know too many people that actually use teletaxi anymore anyway. But, it would encourage people to actually get their outpost warps, which are much better now anyway since they lowered the level.

Right, maybe its not too convenient for some people, because HP would need to be set in home nation, and then theyd need to ride the airship to jeuno if theyre lacking ToAU... But its a small price to pay.

yeah, which is why I said it would be a hassle.

But then the idea of a true LS bank could be introduced, and new methods on how 'points' are earned can be made, and the points could actually be material instead of on paper.
