I'm having a really hard time making any serious amount of Gil, granted I only just hit level 15... is there any easy way to do it? Also I'm in level 11 armour and using a level 13 sword, I don't know where I can get the next upgrade in armour/weaponry as the shops in town don't sell anything higher and I haven't had anything drop yet :o help~

get 30 X 4 stacks of cabbages trade to old guy in selbina, get 2 slime oils talk to a galka and elf in sandy and baskot and get warp and drian sell for 400k and 150k and you got a head start

Kill Crawlers in Windust. Auction off the Cape, you can even camp Spinny Sippi a Notourious monster that drops a cape worth 100K?(prolly more).

Try not to worry about your next major armour upgrade yet, doesnt make a massive amount of difference till level 20+ but you'll probably want to opt for the bone set @ level 16 (not sure what the mage alternitive is!!), so in the mean time, to get money for this, i'd suggest saving up all the drops from the monsters your killing, stacking them, selling them via the auction house, and also, find some bee's and kill them for there chips, which is what most people tend to do for quick easy money, but dont be surprised if you see alot of other players doing it too!

Also, for looking up armour/weapons etc go here: http://ffxi.somepage.com/

It's pretty much your bible for FFXI! Good luck adventuring!

There's many "easy" ways. If by "easy" you mean "not a lot of time needed," however, which is what I find most people really mean, then you're out of luck.

Unfortunately, you're not going to make gil unless you stop levelling, and spend solid hours doing something just for the money. This is the biggest conceptual obstacle I think a lot of newer players have: they're proceeding along in level 7 equipment at level 30, and complain that they can't make enough money when people tell them to upgrade.

You've just got to put the brakes on your levelling for a bit, and do nothing but money-grubbing for a while.

Of course, you're level 15, on your first job. You don't really need a large sum of gil yet, and nobody's going to expect you to have it. Once you're around level 20, and are thinking about doing things like obtaining your chocobo license, and levelling your first subjob, then I'd worry a little more about it.

The money-making method that is most favored by newer players is farming. That means you go out, kill a lot of lower level monsters, and sell the drops. You'll want to target things with highly-sought after rewards ... bees for beehive chips, crawlers for silk thread ... that kind of thing. Have a target.

I'm not sure about current prices, but you can make roughly 8k - 15k selling a stack of beehive chips, which are very easy to get, or from 30k - 50k a stack on silk thread, which are a bit harder.

I'd also recommend investing in a fishing rod, heading out to San d'Oria or Windurst, buying a few stacks of little worms, and sitting down for a while to catch moat carps. These are still a very good source of income, for a lower-level player. They're always in demand, as they're required for the Lu Shang's quest, and they sell very quickly. I've seen these things go for anywhere from 8k - 15k a stack recently.

The key word here, is TIME. There's absolutely no reason for you to be "poor." It all depends on how much of your playtime you're willing to invest making yourself wealthier.

EDIT: I also couldn't help but notice you saying that your weapon is a sword. As there's only one job open to you at the moment (red mage) that can really claim sword as its "best" weapon, I'm curious about what job you've chosen. If you're a warrior, I know the intuitive thing to do (based on all high fantasy you've come in contact with before) would be to stick to swords, but the truth is, as a warrior, you're going to want to concentrate more on axes.

I'm willing to spend a lot of time farming cash to further me on, I've never come across the bees or crawlers though, right now I'm sat in San d'Oria (well not really, I logged off for a break =P) so any quick directions would be handy as I've pretty much strolled around both Ronfaures and Le Thienes/Valkurm and never ran into them >.< do the Elemental Crystals sell for anything?

You mean you aren't selling the crystals that you're getting now on the auction house? That's any player's first source of income. T_T

How much contact have you had with the auction house in San d'Oria? Have you only gone to NPC vendors? What's your job?

Pretty much sold everything to NPC's ~.~ and I've never used the AH, I've heard people mention it though, gah I suck, lol

My starting job is WAR, planning to go DRG.

You can find bees in La Thiene pretty easy - just go south and pop into that little revine. There a bunch that spawn right there. ^^

Edit: And no, you don't suck, it's called being new... everyone went through it so don't let people give you that much of a hard time. ^_~

Alright. These are the first things you need to do.

1) STOP visiting NPC vendors. That's the reason you're not making much money. Almost 95% of your transactions should be on the auction house. At least for right now, never sell a crystal anywhere else.

The auction house is also where you need to start buying a lot of your equipment from. NPC vendors just aren't going to cut it. It's not your fault you didn't know to go there, but now that you've been told, you won't have to make that mistake anymore. ^^

2) Drop the sword (meaning, sell it on the auction house if you can), and get an axe. You might also want to level up polearm, if you're eventually going with dragoon.

Polearm is at 44 or so, and I just spent out all my money on the level 13 sword. I'll go farm them bees to get me an axe =)

Good plan. That's really the best thing you can do.

You're on your way to uberness ^_^

Just read, read, read, about your job, equipment, etc. You'll learn a lot quickly.

I fished up moat carp back when I was lvl 20 about 2 years ago to buy the armor I wanted. I'm not sure if this is good money anymore.

C-c-c-c-c-c-RAFTING! lol :D

Crafting won't help too much with no money base to support it. What I'd do is fish, if I recall last time I fished moat carp selled for 10k a stack. Giant bee's were a good source of money for me in the Sarturabura (sp?) region, which means you're going to have to get on that ferry in selbina and hop over to the other continent. Windy is a good place to farm, they carps sell fast at the auction house from cooking, there are plenty of crawlers and bee's in the zones, and it's purty ^.^ Also for a weapon as a warrior I would suggest getting a great axe type weapon instead especially if you're only taking warrior to 30. At 23 you'll learn the sturmwind ws and that pretty much owns mobs through 23-30. But you'll probably need to kill lower lvl monsters to catch your skill up first. Think it should be like 53 capped or something like that if I recall. I would suggest axe but since the highest you'll be taking your job is to 37 just stick to the greataxe, 30-37 you can easily sub thf for DD or mnk to tank (both of these subs are better with a greataxe). If you decide to take warrior higher into the 50's or so axe is easy to catch up in anyway, the greataxe is just a biach if you're behind in it. Those crystals... keep them they sell for maybe 3k a stack for wind and fire. Oh, VERY IMPORTANT!!!! keep your beastman seals, they may seem worthless but they can actually net you some nice gil if you save them up. The more you save, the more money you'll make in the long run, so SAVE THEM! :D.... phew, I can't think of any other advice, I'll post here if I remember any more.

Yeah.. it'd be really nice if everyone can buy and sell things from just a NPC, then you wouldn't have to worry about buying expensive things from an AH. Actually when I first started too I didn't really know about AH or how to use it really until further in. I bought and sold things to a NPC too... lol

There's a lot of low lvl crafts that can make you a bit of profit even from lvl 0. So if you keep the crystals and buy the ingredients for that craft guild, you can synthesize the item and sell on AH for a profit and crafting makes you gil too, yet it can drain a bit of gil from you as well.

Fishing, Mining, and Harvesting aren't too difficult to do and can make you a bit of starting gil as well, but needs a lot of time spent on. Do some quests too and some quest items are even worth 5-20k or more the harder the quest is later on, and can raise your city fame which will come in handy later on in your gaming future.

Moat sell for more gil now than they did when you were fishing them.

another source of income i thought was great when i was starting in sandy was toadstools in gheslba outpost (in a cave that you can enter at G-7). i think 10 or so spawn there every 5 mins or so and you can go in a circle killing them (youll see when you get there) and farm the shrooms and crystals from them, both should sell for atleast 4k a stack. Good for leveling around lvl 7-8 or skilling up on with your new axe. Get 2 or 3 stacks of each should get you 20k+ which should be enough for liz. gear and any weapon you need.

Fish for moat carps. Now. They're easy fish to catch, and they sell for about 10k each stack now. each stack of bait to get the fish is 36 gil, meaning you get tons back (if you farm your fishing pole, atleast).

Something I felt the need to mention: -Some- items are cheaper to buy via the NPC vendors! You have to be savvy about it.

If you have a sword now-- meh, don't sweat it. I used a sword til lvl 20. (Until being pointed and laughed at by friends-- and then corrected it.) Keep using that while farming until you can get a better weapon.

I'd recommend investing in a halycon rod while fishing (if you go the moat carp route)-- least likely to break. Insect Paste being the best bait. You can do this right inside of San'doria.

Do quests as you can to build fame-- some quests also offer you rewards that can be useful to you (or can make you gil).

Until you feel comfortable leaving the San'doria Region try farming in Ghelsba and King Ramptier's Tomb (KRT). I did fairly well on farming fire crystals that dropped off of Orcs in Ghelsba. Dark Crystals and Sleep Shrooms from the shrooms that someone else mentioned. You can make like 20k a stack on shrooms ( I still make money off those-- but usually crafting them into sleep potions or various foods.). Not sure if that is still profitable, though.

In KRT you have the goblins that drop wild onions (another good item), bat wings from the bats, and flint stones from worms. If you get a chest key you can get battle gloves that sell for like 100k now (used to be like 5k, but hey, stay there long enough and get a pair to sell and a pair for yourself). I forgot the levels of those lowbie nms there-- you might be too low for that.

I used to do Eco-War and Garrison, but that is not until you're lvl 20.

Honestly, I failed at farming. Though, I started out as a white mage. So, with help from some nice people I was able to get a jump start (while selling everything that I came across on my travels to buy spells). Built up fame for tele-scrolls and got help with the quests and started tele-taxi. Did that til my eyes would bleed, but also meeting tons of players on the server.

So, with that in mind-- if you need help and I'm not busy, look me up. Couldn't hurt for you to see the other side of the world (as areas outside of Windurst can be very profitable).
