FF8 was my second favorite, behind FF7. Loved Squall, Rinoa(sp?), Zell annoyed me though. I didn't care much for the magic system. I mean come on, you're too afraid to cast a spell because it'll hurt your stats!

You cast spells in that game? O_o

Seriously, the secret to success in FF8 is as follows:

Never, ever cast spells.

Never, ever summon a GF (Except maybe Carbuncle.)

Do not let the game choose what skills your GFs will learn - Every GF has more potential skills than room for them on the Skill listing. Learning worthless ones like GF HP+ and Summon+ will prohibit you from learning the ones that you need.

The skills that you need are as follows:

First, learn all skills that let you refine magic and items, magic from items, and magic from cards. (Also learn the one that lets you turn enemies into cards - cards are very good to refine from!) You know all that "useless crap" you get? Most of that can be refined into something useful. Even better, One can refine a lot of useful spells before you can draw them from enemies! I had Demi junctioned to all my characters at the very beginning of disc 2 - a long time before you can draw it.

You can also refine higher level magic - such as Firaga - a long time before you can draw it from an enemy.

There ARE a few spells where it's worth it to sit there and draw it from enemies, because you can't refine them. Ultima, Double, and Triple come to mind, but I'm sure there are others.

Next you want to learn junction abilities - like STR and such.

After that, learn abilities that raise stats by a percentage.

Also, consider investing in the Forget Grass (Or whatever the name is.) Erasing duplicate abilities (Ones that every GF has) opens room for using the rare items later in the game that give GFs good abilities that are usefull.

Finally, learn all movement abilites, encounter down and see hidden and such.

Moving on, here's part #2:

Never let Squall's HP come above the yellow zone.

Why? So you can pimp Renzokuken mercilessly. Use this as often as possible. If an animation is playing, constantly press triangle to keep reopening the battle menu until the Limit Break option appears.

You can also get some similar returns from Zell and Irvine's limit breaks, but nothing like on Squalls, especially once you get the Lionheart.

Not only will you tear through enemies like a tornado through a trailer park, your rank will constantly improve! Rank is partially based on how often you use limit breaks. You'll get good cash this way. :)

That's pretty much it, actually.

On a side note, it IS possible to beat the giant spider robot in the first SeeD mission. :)

Let me know if you found this interesting!

(I really need to replay this game, I forget all the names. :o)

If you really wanna PWN then you should also draw a lot of demi's from diablos since he's the only one you can get it from early in the game ^^v but ya... I still dun think FF8 is all that great XD (Compared to the other FFs) oh.. and who dun love summoning Eden? ^^v it gives me time to take a nap XD

Knights of the Round took much more time IMHO in FFVII... was ok at first but later on you just go zzz...

yup ^^ and it really was not as powerful as some limit breaks ^^ I tend to never use KoTR as it bores me.. too easy to win.... and it's boring.. I can never get bored of Clouds Omnislash though ^^

KotR was really, IMHO, just a sort of thing to accomplish in the game. While it did do stupendous damage at times (my highest was a total of 52,904 all added up), its really just one of those "have to have" items to prove your worth in the game. I really loved the whole getting-the-gold-chocobo thing. Anyways. Back to the ffviii thing..

Finally! Someone else who understands that you can make your characters insanely powerful in the first 2-3 hours of the game when junctioned correctly! I cant stress enough how good junctioning is for you. With the right combinations, you can (by the end of the game, of course) have all of your characters stats maxed out (255), absorb three elements and has 50-80% resistance to all others, and ontop of that, be immune to all status ailments. And it is all about making your GF work for you and learn what you want it to. The pet food store in Esthar (I think thats where it is) will become your best friend quickly. I just started playing through the game again, i'm five hours in, level 30, and I havent even gone to the fire cavern lol. But Squall, with all the magic i've junctioned so far, is doing damn near 1000 points of damage per attack, and sleeps the enemy upon contact.

Its that simple. Junction your heart out and you'll smash FFVIII. Oh and Tyrion, if you manage to beat the spider, you get 1000 bonus points (i think) on your final report. Just makes your SeeD rank higher when you finally leave the school lol.

On another note. KotR is just like the Proof of Omega in 8. Just a symbol of ability.

Where's the fun in making your characters so Uber powerful so early in the game? It would bore the living sh*t out of me to play through the entire 3 or 4 discs (can't remember) if everything I encountered, including bosses, posed no challange.

yeah, the first time I went through the game I just lvl'd as I got my ass kicked, so it was always a challenge. The second time through I got all the secret stuff.......the third time through however was kinda boring, 1. I played it too much and 2. I got my party to lvl 50 on the first disc.....

I loved the whole "You only need 1k exp to lvl" thing....

The first few times I played the game, I did nothing of the sort. I just ran around, doing my thing. By the end of disc 1 I was barely level 25. The good thing about ff8 is that the enemies/bosses dont have set levels. They are equal to/more powerful than whatever level Squall is. There is -always- going to be a challenge, but I only super leveled myself after beating the game several times normally. I just wanted to see if I could do it. And I did!

And that's what I loved about FFVIII more than anything else, leveling up had no effect on the overall difficulty, it was all about knowing how to junction and GF. Oh, and lest we forget the bug of junctioning Ultima to everything, that's fun.

Oh, and we cant forget about useing Lionheart on Ifrit right at the start of the game. Why the HELL would they allow that?

The card game in VIII broke the game, it really did. You could get all cards in the game right in Garden, before fighting Ifrit. Then you refine cards into the components to make Squalls Final weapon, and make it in the town nearby (ballamb?)

and no, there isnt a card that refines into Pulse ammo, but you can refine a card to learn "Ammo refine" and make it that way.

My favorite ammo is the Fast Ammo >_>. As discussed in another thread, I didnt use squall during the final fights, I had Quistis, Irvine, and Selphie. When I got to Ultimecias final form (the..weirdo faceless one), Irvine single-handedly killed her using the fast-ammo limit. For some unknown reason, it gave me nearly 40 seconds to press R1 as many times as I could. I began with 99 rounds, by the time about 20 or so seconds rolled around, I had 45 shots left, and Ultimecia was taking 0 damage per shot, since she was dead..then she went into her little speech or whatever...I felt so cool, lol. I video-taped it too, because i'm a dork and was planning on recording the ending.

I feel FF8 was generally under-rated. People expected too much out of it, or something. I found it to be an excellent game, ranking among the top FF games in my book. I dont understand why so many people didnt like it.

not sure why others might not like it.. but I'll give my reasons

- not enough character development for the other characters. (This was a problem in FF9 too.... I wanted more Freya development T.T)

- I didn't like the idea that the monsters level with you. It made fighting completely pointless. There really was no need for conventional "levels" in that game

- Pure boring love story... sure the whole time paradox thing with the boss beng Rinoa was interesting.. but all of it was a big boring love story ><

- most of the characters just annoyed me. Irvine was pretty dumb... Zell was annoyingly stupid, Squall was a whiney bitch, Rinoa just needs to die.. she is by far the most annoying. etc

there are other reasons but ya... as a game I still consider it very good. I just don't think it was good compared to other FFs.. But that's my opinion on it.

i may be the first and only person ever to use a lionheart b4 i went on my seed test. 8 is the fastest game and the tricks as listed above should be coupled with the golden rule.

do not ever level that you can avoid

the mobs, yes, even bosses, are restricted to levels based off yours. their special attacks are effectively locked off by you being a low level. beat omega weapon at level 9 (?) i think it is... He can't terra break.

I left quistis with almost no HP and i had that instant kill thing. Makes the battles go really fast ^^. Btw... Irvine is not annoying, he's bad ass ^^
