How would you spend $456 billion

You are aware it doesn't lower pollution by that much right? As Hydrogen is made from electrolysis of water, turning it into hydrogen and oxygen gas. As the name implies this requires electricity and rather a large amount.

Which of you can tell me where the majority of electricity comes from? Bingo.

Although coal will last longer than oil so i guess i can't fault it too much.

And what would i do with that amount of cash? Vacation in Iraq ofc.

That and buy lots of beer.

windmills, waterwheels, even manual cranking are other forms of electricity creation, which then are used to charge batteries. Coal isnt really the only way we can get it. Im positive they have an alternative to coal, because the goal of the entire thing is to lower the amount of pollution thats put off.

I'm well aware there are alternative power sources, but how used are they? I haven't checked recently but last i did global power was 20% from hydroelectric (waterwheels if you prefer), 10% various other methods including solar and wind, and 70% was from coal and other non-renewable sources of fuel.

Try reading what i posted.

I read what you posted. What i'm saying is that with the whole anti-pollution thing going on, coal is not what theyre going to be using to make the electricity. This pretty much means coal is going to be dropped like a rock when considering the use of electricity to assist in fueling vehicles. Homes and such are a different story, however.

I'll believe it when i see it.

No more college, no more jobs, just fun times on the town!

Actually, there's a form of coal burning that is a lot cleaner than what we're currently doing, but it raises costs and cuts efficiency. Not exactly an easy thing to put in place with that tradeoff...

The ideal, and one that is entirely possible in the near future, is to have a true fuel-cell car that does the electrolysis itself and only requires filling up with distilled water.

Call me a conspirator, but I think the reason this tech is so far behind what should be publicly available is because of the effect it would have on the global economy. Think about it, if you could run your car on water, how much money do you take out of the middle east? How many jobs do you eliminate at gas stations? How many mechanics do you put out of business because they're too established to learn how to repair a brand new form of engine, one that could be highly controlled by electronics (which is already a problem with many mechanics when dealing with newer cars, they are starting to be much more 'dealer only' serviceable requiring specific tools and gauges).

As for the OP: I would invest a few billion and live off the interest. I'd start up my own game dev company, hiring the best and brightest I could find to create the perfect games. I'd buy every major motion picture ever made, and devote my free time to watching every single one of them with any company I could conjure to join me in my own private theater in my mansion on my huge property with houses for all my family and friends to live and not have to work forever. As a matter of fact, I'd buy a fully functional town somewhere in New England. I'd have a full sized pirate ship custom built for me to sail the oceans with my family and friends. And with the last 400 billion? I'd fund a cure for cancer, aids, and diabetes.

1) Good posts Cmd, don't see many people actually defending those issues. ;p

2) Kage, why am I not the first on the list for the orgy?

3) What I'd do with that money is have Gore assasinated!

PS: Miros, I'm home from school and 21. I think you owe me a drink.

At the risk of taking a ton of flak:

Dole it out to roughly 3500 families who deserve it much more than most of us do at this point.

You want to help the less fortunate? Ewww...

In a manner of speaking.

It's not a political thing, it's just what i'd do provided i were directly given the money that was to go to funding the war.

Oh and apparently i grossly miscalculated, truly and more accurately it'd be closer to 30,000 soldiers and families to varying degrees.
