Hurricane Ike

Galveston, TX looks like it's going to get hit pretty hard. I live about 70 miles from Galveston (I'm just north of Houston) and where I'm at, we're going to get some big winds and rain. I know there are several people that play on Quetz that live in the Houston area and also live in Galveston, but I don't remember who they are.

They've got what they call the sea wall in Galveston that was built around 1902 after the hurricane of 1900 basically destroyed all of Galveston. The wall is around 15 feet tall, and to get down the beach, you typically have to walk down stairs attached to the sea wall. From watching the local news people in Galveston, it looks like you can't even see the beaches anymore, and it looks like the water is about 5-7 feet from the top of the wall already with the hurricane still 250 miles away.

While I'm really wanting to level sam today, I'm having to move all the outdoor furniture inside and board up the windows of my house. I just hope I don't lose power because no net connection is really boring.

That's crazy.. I read somewhere this morning that it could be around a 20ft storm surge. Stay safe man, this looks like a bad one. :crazyest:

yeah was watching the waters pile up on the weatherchannel just now, just makes me hope darsha gets out of there and I hope this hurricane doesn't get in the way with me moving to san antonio in a few months either I doubt but you never can tell

This just isn't the state's weekend. I live just north of Lubbock, and that got flooded after renmants of Lowell from the Pacific dumped about 8 inches of rain practically overnight. It may not seem like much in other places, but we almost never see half that much rain, and we aren't built to take that much. I have pictures of the Texas Tech football field, which is now a huge wading pool.

Us up here in the Panhandle will keep an eye on what's going on and give prayers for the safety of y'all getting caught in Ike's path.

Yea this could get pretty bad. There are some people that still wont leave and evacuate like they should. I have a few friends that live in Galveston and Houston and they should be heading to Dallas were I am at. I haven't been able to get in touch with them but I hope they are all ok.

The main thing that pisses me off about this is that some gas stations are raising the prices in houston by .30 cents a gallon. People have it hard enough as is they don't need to worry about that also.

I feel for everyone in the galveston area. im in louisiana just north of New Orleans and were already getting 30mph wind gust right now and its expected to get a bit worse by tomorow. Ive been watchin the weatherchannel seeing if i would have to evacuate again to houston like i did for Gustav just a week ago

This is getting really bad as the situation develops.

I'll try to explain this as best I can.

Basically, Galveston bay, TX has a mini-gulf ship yard that goes straight up a canal into houston, and eventually, dallas, via a man made channel.

Right now, the hurricane is moving towards the left side of Galveston, towards that ship channel, meaning that that particular area could very easily get the Front right flank of the hurricane, which is the strongest, worst possible part to get hit by.

If the storm surge over tops the canal's sea walls (17ft.) with its expected 20-25ft surge, the canal could flood, flooding the entire city of galveston, and possibly houston.

This is basically the worst possible scenario for any hurricane in the gulf of mexico.

In summary: This is going to be worse than katrina, buckle your seat belts.

wel im still alive so far. Power went out around 6am and there are tons of trees down everywhere. One fell on my house but it doesn't look too bad. Still insanely windy. Posting this from my iphone. Fence in my backyard is down too. I'll take pictures when it calms down.

No power for 24 hours for me now. It's very by humid, quiet, and dark. Cell pphpnes were only randomly working yesterday, with the edge and 3g networks being down almost the entire time. It's 6am now and I'm lying ok bed in total darkness as of rains and thjders outside. Power might tale up to two weeks to restore.

I'm really hot and bored.
