So we should let her be out in the public fucking over MORE lives then? Genius. I'd rather we just lock her up for life and we can remove people in jail/prison for selling, using, growing drugs alone out (that'd be a TON of freed money and man power for our system). Drugs alone aren't the problem. Hell, many use drugs fine and don't fuck anyone over other than themselves and that's fine by me :|
I wasn't implying she shouldn't be punished, just that a life sentence is not efficient, now. I think she should go to prison and be punished accordingly, as Pompidou laid out very nicely, and be evaluated when some time passes to see if she is fit to rejoin society. If she never turns that corner, then by all means, keep her in for life, but to say "throw her in jail forever, now" is not the proper answer, though I whole heartily accept where your heart is in the matter.
It's important to realize that everyone is prone to extremely stupid mistakes. A long while back I made a poor choice to party with some ridiculously shady people on my birthday. We did enough cocaine to pay for a Benz and was out drinking until the, at the time, 4 A.M. state limit. I woke up the next evening in my foyer wondering how I got there until I looked out the window to see my car partially parked in the yard. It was a 20 mile drive from where we last was to my house and I made that drive. The difference between her and I could be as simple as luck or as far apart ranging from not learning the lesson that, that should never happen again to being addicted to such things and reproducing the situation. We don't know about her, just about what she did.
Does that excuse her of her actions? Not in the slightest, I'm just saying she may have very well learned her lesson had she not killed someone and maybe has learned it fiercely since she did. She deserves to be punished, but also reexamined after a proper time. People like her that turn that corner for good often end up using their priors to do good for others and even can save lives. Also, it's important to realize how pitiful of a life she will even have outside in society. She will be punished for the rest of her life whether she is in prison or not, no reason to double it up after a certain amount of time. This of course using the ceteris paribus that she is even mildly human, if that isn't the case, that's what evaluation boards in prisons are for.
Something else to consider, if you choose, on the drugs front. If you put druggies (considering hard drugs and not Pot related) in jail you possibly take away from the drug pool. Example: Some guy who might have come into contact with the druggie, may now never, and may lead a clean life in which case -every single human encounter
he makes- is not effected by a relationship to drugs. For every dose of a drug doled out, there are dangerous possibilities on countless levels to hundreds of thousands, at least, of people. A single tab of Extacy has the possibility to cause, again, countless negative human interactions where as this girl's huge mistake is one and done (again, regulating off the same ceteris paribus). If the person that sold this girl and her friends the drugs was locked up, thus her never having the opportunity to come into contact with them, 24 years from now a very proud Mr. Wood may have been watching his child walk across a stage to receive his/her college diploma.
