At the age of 31, and an avid (read:rabid) gamer since 1979, I have for so many years had what I call "short game attention span"

I would get a game, love it for about 2 days to a week, and set aside never to play again, regardless of weather or not i finished it, to start another one.

After 25 yrs of gaming FFXI comes along, and I have played literally nothing since ;) Each time is a unique, fun filled experience in a constantly changing world that I simply cant get enough of. However, there is always a dark side.
And for me that Dark Side is the amassing of gil.

The fact that the best gear for my lvl that will allow me to be the best I can be at my chosen job is so expensive is ridiculous. Farming takes eon's and
just forget about NM hunting, I love to hunt NM's, its one of my favorite things to do. But when you spend 4hrs on Empy and loose him to someone who just shows up, or cant get a claim on an NM that appears roughly once per hour due to the already super rich gil farmers ( thanx for being a greedy ass Odhinn) that never stop camping frustrates me to the point of exhaust.

It hit me last night, after loosing empy to a guy who just showed up 5 mins
earlier (empy spawned right on top of him) just how much time I wasted
doing absolutley nothing! 4hrs of my life lost just standing there :(
I know I know...... Farm. I do, but to farm for around 800k in gear will
take me till the 2nd coming of christ.

I feel like Ive betrayed myself for camping empy in the first place. I got
him once for the drop (which i had to split with someone) and another time
with Marajade so she could get a pin (she got one W00t!) I never wanted to camp for cash because I truly believe I am hindering another player
who camps it for the drop, to use, not to sell.

I could go on for days about this but for now Ill end it.

And to anyone(in game, not here)that has criticized me for not having
ochiudos kote or fuma kyahan, try to remember, its not from laziness
or stupidity, its because of the greed and carelessness of others that I
wear stock, run of the mill AH items. (except my jujitsu gi :) thanx Mara,
21K more and I think we are even:).

Thanx for reading all and allowing me vent for my frustrations

I'll assume your a SAM, and let you know that Ochiudo's Kote are way way overrated. They are pretty nice at Lv34, but the farther you go, You'll notice that 20 attack is making less and less of a differance.

Don't fret. If you are good at your job, you can get away with having 'Second Tier' equipment.

WI, hey?

Naffenu and I are currently residing in Appleton.

Klobbrntank and Phobos are in Racine.

that is so cool ;)

Ive been to Appleton (coolest mall ever! ) and I know Phobos ! hes so cool.
Bard extraordinaire. seems Quetzy has a lot of wisconsinites.
Akamu (where are u my Galka mentor?) lives in Oshkosh :)

I used to know a guy out of appleton that had a game store called Tri-Star games, He worked the local flee markets down here about 10 yrs ago during
the SNES/Genesis hey-day. *recalls fond memories of phantasy star 2*

Its because they are undercover agents surveying local gang activity and are watching for the mad man "Irunaroundwithnosocksandunderwearon"

I used to be of the school that said that if you don't need the item, then let others who need it camp it. Yesterday I was campin lizzy as a 36whm/5rng (I do this because I can travel around quicker with teles) and I got a /tell cussing me out because Im just campin for profit, he really needs the boots, blahblahblah. I responded telling him that I was going to use them (Im leveling a Drk and Thf too) and he again comes back calling me a liar. I thought about it for awhile though. I have a Blm that's rapidly approaching 50 and at 51 there are several staffs that I need (at least AS much if not more than a Thf needs leaping boots) that are going to cost 200k and aren't dropped only purchased or crafted. What would be wrong with me getting the drop to sell to purchase my staff? Isn't this essentially camping lizzy to get a staff drop?

The subject of gil, whether it be making it or keeping it, is a very touchy one. NM camping brings out the worst in people because they all have reasons for wanting the drop and see others as trying to prevent them from success. I too am a BLM and I really, REALLY want an elemental staff or two, but im nearly flat busted broke at the moment. I usually spend my time crafting to make gil... but the market on fly lures has crashed so ive got a AH full of lures that just wont sell and get me back enough of the money I invested in them to make it worth my time.

Back to NM hunting. When camping you run accross a few different kinds of people; people camping to use the drop, people camping to sell the drop, and people who are camping because they are just plain bored. Again people who want to use the drop are more prone to get mad because they will essentially be paying the person next to them for something they could get for free, which is why I dont bother camping NM's (plus I'm not too good at it hehe).

Not that anything I've said is anything new, I just wanted to let those who need gil know that you probably have a lot more gil than I do (I'm usually lucky if I have more than 10k on me at any one time.)

-Ham

Good point ;)

But I mean People like Odhinn, /check him sometime.

he wears at least 1.5 mil in gear at all times, even as hes campin Mee Deegi
WEARING THE KOTE :(

He is one of many people who sell gil online. Browse around the net and see
how much these sites pay for ,say, 1 million gil. its absolutley sick.

those are the types i despise, havent seen anyone like that?
head to the castle oztroja courtyards and see the uber rich gilfarmers
killing it for everyone.

before the question arises of "how do you know he sells gil?"

a) I had an in-depth conversation with one of his "associates"
b) who needs to constantly camp the big $ NM's when they already have the pimpinest gear?

/sighs dejectedly

They do it for a living, or for fun, their way of having fun anyway.

bah I wouldnt ever sell gil eve if i had like 90 mil I would get a mule and then go buy the best EQ for every job on my char then filly my mog house with flower pots and start gardening and then once and a while pay people to do stupid things to amuse me.

I don't believe for one second that it is coincidence that achieving things in game takes massive amounts of time (be it in obtaining gil or XP) and that we are paying , what is it, $12.99 (?) per month to play the game. I remember FFVII. I damn near cleared the whole game (all important items, weapons, chocobo breading, and 99 lvl characters) in less than 99 hours. Thats plenty of playing time for your money AND by putting in effort, you achieve greatness. And you only pay once. Come to FFXI. How far do you think you'd get in only 99 hours? I understand the greater scope of the game, in comparison to the other FF's, and how it's designed for longetivity. Yet this game, I truly believe, is designed to be particularly lenghthy because of the monthly fees. It's borderline extortion.
Given this rationale, you might ask "then why do you continue to play?" The answer is that I have indeed thought about quitting many times. I don't, for one second, believe that playing a videogame to obscene lengths just to get an item that does nothing for you in your real, day to day life is any kind of a virtue. Hard work is a virtue, but you should work hard towards things that matter. In essence, its more virtuous to spend time to work for dollars rather than gil. The game shouldn't come easily, then there would be no challenge, but why should a person spend just as much time earning Gil as he does earning dollars? Why should the time involved in those pursuits even be close enough to garner comparison? And the times involved really ARE close enough.
I play ffxi to relax and have fun. Most people do, so why should we be subjected to lengthy bouts of fishing and farming and camping to be any good at our hobby? Sure, I play often to get better and thus have more fun, but the amount of time ffxi puts you through is ridiculous.
I continue to play because I, unlike so many other people, have money to spare. All things considered, I do not feel that I'm getting my money's worth from this game. I am a ps2 player, so it was a high initial buy-in, and X amount ever since. I'm lucky to have the money right now. Couple years ago? I'd have quit. I had less expendable income.
It is a great game. I have fun playing. What it takes to become accoplished is outrageously extensive, and it isn't truly worth the money. If it only cost $5 a month, I'd have very little room to bitch.

well put dale :)

glad to have you aboard, your insights make for a good read.
I have no problem usually with the time i spend on this game.
I firmly believe it matters not what you do with your time, as long as it makes you happy. I just hope I live to see the day when there is a perfect (or at least close to) MMORPG that does not allow jackasses to exploit the game for personal gain and take away from the enjoyment of others.

Yeah, exactly right.
If someone feels that they get they're money's worth from this game? Good for them! As long as its a hobby and not a way of life (and as viewers of another infamous thread know, I'm vehemently opposed to taking this game too seriously) then go for it. I spend tons of time at this game, but thats cause I got the time to spare. Soon I won't, and I'll spend less, because life is more important than ffxi.

Arnt Ochiudo's Kote marked RARE? Meaning that you can only carry one at a time? How could he camp them if he has a pair on?

Or am I mistaken, and the Kote arnt RARE? I just assume they are because Leaping Boots and Emperor Hairpin are.

But like I said; you dont need top tier equipment if you are playing your job correctly. Most people, however, refuse to even play their jobs correctly. Samurai have a poor reputation on our server, because most of them play the job in such a way that it hinders what we truely should be adding to the group. Also; Playing SAM well requires teamwork and a good party setup... if your pickup group is full of people who wont cooperate with skillchains and magic bursts, then it would be like inviting a THF and not helping him setup his SA TA.

Dance, Tanks! Dance!

I am in the same boat as Dale.

I play simply to do something mindless for a few hours. I am lucky to be fortunate in life, and like to conquer my unnessisary stress by "zoning out" in a game.

I am, unfortunatly, highly competitive though- and want the best gear and enourmous amounts of gil also.

So I find myself taking little breaks from the game here and there to check back in with reality :D

Yeah, I'm really competitive too and so I want the best gear, and even though I'm opposed to the system, I play ball and work hard to get the good gear. I just fell I shouldn't have to work very hard, but then I don't have VERY good gear. It approaches being an opposing dichotomy that I'm trying to work out. Its not SO oposing when you consider the alternative is to "take your ball and go home". I'm an adult, I can hold opposing ideas in my head and try to find the grey area between. But I don't like to.
