I hate how people think Elvaan can't be BLM

Every FFXI other message board that I've read has some topic on Elvaan Blackmage (BLM). About half the posts (exaggeration) says something like:

"Elvaans can't be blackmage. Create a Tarutaru if you want to be a blackmage.

Well for those people who descriminate again race, /disgust <fill_in_name>.

Though Tarutarus have an advantage with their naturally higher Int and MP pool, it is not impossible to be a Elvaan BLM.

If you have any doubts that I can be an effective BLM, find me in game for a demonstration.

preach on.....i hate the norm. Why play these games if u see the same type of player over and pver again? I mean...they wanna bitch about elves being mages, but they dont about tarus being goons, sams and other melee? meh....let them bitch and gripe.....i have every intention of lvling whm eventually, for the porting and sneak/invis abilities specifically.....for travelling's sake.

Elvaan BLM's rock!!! I still want to see a Fireworks show when you have a chance^^.

Seems to me that if people pick a race that is not ideally suited for the class they are playing, that creates so much more RP value, a nice background story on just how this "odd" combination came about.

Bottom line is, the time spend online in game is yours to do as you please, if someone is unable to accept that and whatever comes with that (i.e. "odd" combinations), then it's their loss.

If it were impossible to play a good Elvaan BLM, then SE would not have made that combo possible.

Villarel . . .

*gives you a big hug* Thank you, thank you, thank you . . . I highly commend you for your efforts to dispel the outright racism in this game. My husband plays Elvaan BLM, and every time we join a party he gets dissed left and right. Sometimes it's outright, sometimes it's more covert, but every time we group there's always some smarmy comment made about Elvaan BLM. They pay no attention to the fact that he's loaded for bear with +INT equipment (Elvaan RSE, 2 morion earrings, erudite's headband, etc.), or that he munches pies like a diabetic with a death wish (I craft him melon pies and juice), or even bother to watch the big numbers pop up on his MB's- as soon as they see that Elvaan 'toon, their minds are made up, he sucks, and no evidence to the contrary can sway that opinion. *sighs*

It's been a hard road, especially now during the "lean times" of 32-41- it's hard to get parties sometimes, especially when we always try to get in together, with that misconception about Elvaan mages. (I have it slightly better being Elvaan RDM, more people find that acceptable, but it can still be tough). All we can do is just slog through as best we can, grabbing parties whenever we can, and hopefully change the misconceptions of a few people here and there as we play. I'm hoping that things will improve once I hit that magical lvl 41 and get Refresh, maybe then they'll suddenly have an extra spot for my BLM hubby, heh.

This is what you do if you are playing a job your race isn't naturally suited for and you want invites or respect

1. Get at least rank 5. People will respect the rank. And this usually means you can afford to get gear to compensate for race and that you know how to do your job.

2. Get uber gear (astral rings for mages, emps pin and lizzy boots for melee/archer, monster signa for brds and best - keep in mind these are suggestions not absoulutes) and put that in your search comment. also put food there as well.

3. Make sure your sub isn't underlvled or a really bad match for your main. I wont send a Evl mage with war sub no matter what...

These three things will go far to get you invites.

Psssht, Elvaan BLM? Yeah, right, that'll be the day I see a Taru play pure melee like WAR, THF or MNK. ;)

I've always said this, but any "disadvantage" to a race/job can be overcome by both equipment and the player sitting behind the keyboard/game pad. Any skilled player can make anything work... hell, I never look at race when looking for a party member. As a matter off act, if I happen to see a Galkan BLM or WHM that's managed to get as high as he has, I immediately invite him into my group. Player skill counts for a lot in this game, and people give the races too much damn credit IMO; it's either a copout or ignorance to use race as an excuse.

Thanks Syn.

You're one hell of a RNG too. AND you also in a similar situation. Elvaan can be excellent rangers. The most damage I've ever seen was from the bow of an Elvaan Ranger who subbed WAR!

Indeed

Good point, Vill... I have PT'd with vill a few times, and is probably one of the best I have ever PT'd with ^^

hi vill ~~~~

and she's right !!!

she kicks major "bleep" "bleep" and some more :p

Any race can play any job. I partied with a Taru Paladin a few weeks back and he did a kick ass job and we had no problems. :D It almost inspired me to try a melee job sometime in the future myself.

Ha, anytime someone mentions Elvaan BLMs being bad, I just point them to Faluzure. This guy is a lvl 75 BLM, lvl 60-something RDM, 40-something WHM.... and he's great with all of them. And he's Elvaan. And you know what? He beat the record on our server at one point for the lvl 70 genkai quest (the Maat fight) for BLMs. Perfect example of how any race can play any job. Like Runekane said: any race can play any job; it's just a matter of player skill and getting the right equipment. I've never once looked at race when it came to finding PT members, and I think it's idiotic of people to do so.

Well, I saw your video. It has a nice visual quality to it. And I can tell you're on the PC version of FFXI. My question is which program did you use? Fraps, right? I'm trying to record videos myself, and the quality isn't exactly comming out right.

Mind telling me what settings you had? Thanks in Advance, Jazper.

DeviFoxx,
My settings for FFXI are the highest settings in the configuration tool. In regards to Video, I also utilized Fraps to take the vid. This one minute + Video at [15fps / halfsize / no sound] turned out to be 250MB~ which was unacceptable. I utilized a tool called VirtualDub (Vdub) to compress it using Windows Media Player 9 Compression. The end result is a 5.8MB file of pretty decent quality that anyone with WMP9 can view. :D

Ah yes... I just was curious as to what settings you used with Fraps.

VirtualDub is something I'm very familiar with.

(I'm a Part Time-Anime Fansubber. Encoding, Typsetting, & Karaoke.)

Maybe I'll do an FFXI music video. That'd be pretty cool. Or a medley of all of us. Who knows?

Thanks for the kind words Jazper.

Last night's attempt at Amikiri was (Excitement!).
