I only really have two rules of arguing:

1. Don't argue with someone flatly incapable of logic and reason (be it due to insanity, stupidity, or any other cause). Reasoning behind this rule is pretty obvious.

2. Don't argue with someone who demonstrably can't see any perspective other than their own. Reasoning behind this rule: your words will fall on deaf ears, so spare yourself the trouble.

(Also, such people in both cases tend to end up making fools of themselves from objective third-party perspectives, without needing any help.)

There's also a third, optional rule:

3. Unless you have the time and patience to carefully unravel their wording (if you do, consider law school), don't argue with someone who jumps through rhetorical loops, and who isn't straightforward and to the point about what they mean and what they're eventually getting at.
